Color octet scalars and high p_T four-jet events at the LHC

    Get PDF
We study the effect of color octet scalars on the high transverse momenta four-jet cross section at the LHC. We consider both weak singlet and doublet scalars, concentrating on the case of small couplings to quarks. We find that a relatively early discovery at the LHC is possible for a range of scalar masses

Racial Differences in Veteran Service Connection Disability

The problem this project addresses is racial differences in veteran service connection disability, specifically for the African American Veteran community. Throughout history, African Americans have notably been underserved in the healthcare system. The literature also shows a huge disparity across races of veterans versus non-veterans when seeking mental health care. However, in some of the literature, there is conflicting research on whether non-white racial groups do in fact receive poorer quality care leading to poorer outcomes. The research question of interest is: What are the experiences of African American veterans in accessing disability resources? This research project was a qualitative study utilizing in-person interviews with five African American veterans who are currently receiving health care from the government and have a service connection disability. These respondents were chosen based on their race and ethnic background as well as their commonality of having service-connection disabilities. A content analysis was conducted on the data, where the researcher examined the data for its emerging themes. None of the participants had a disability rating below 70%, nor did anyone have a rating of 100%, and each participant was from the South. No veterans expressed concern with the VA Healthcare System or the care that they receive there. However, 4 of 5 veterans spoke of how they did not think the rating period was fair for various reasons. All veterans mentioned they felt their disability rating should be higher, and they do believe white veterans get a higher rating than black veterans. The implications for social work practice and policy as this research shows African American veterans are not receiving fair disability ratings which impacts their health and economic viability

B and L at the SUSY Scale, Dark Matter and R-parity Violation

We present a simple theory where baryon and lepton numbers are spontaneously broken at the supersymmetry scale. In this context R-parity must be spontaneously broken but the theory still contains a stable field which can play the role of the cold dark matter of the Universe. We discuss the spectrum of the theory, the properties of the dark matter candidate and the predictions for direct detection experiments. This theory provides a concrete example of exotic supersymmetric signatures associated with having the simultaneous presence of R-parity violating and missing energy signals at the Large Hadron Collider

Scalar Representations and Minimal Flavor Violation

We discuss the representations that new scalar degrees of freedom (beyond those in the minimal standard model) can have if they couple to quarks in a way that is consistent with minimal flavor violation. If the new scalars are singlets under the flavor group then they must be color singlets or color octets. In this paper we discuss the allowed representations and renormalizable couplings when the new scalars also transform under the flavor group. We find that color \bar{3} and 6 representations are also allowed. We focus on the cases where the new scalars can have renormalizable Yukawa couplings to the quarks without factors of the quark Yukawa matrices. The renormalizable couplings in the models we introduce automatically conserve baryon number.Comment: 18 pages, 2 figures V2: Lepton MFV protection of baryon number discusse

The first-story floor plan was altered significantly during the 1951 renovations, and the entry vestibule is adorned with Neo-Gothic panelling. The chapel on the first floor is handsomely finished. The two-story sanctuary space has a semi-circular configuration with pews radiating from the altar, a balcony and substantial crown moulding

Higgs boson decays, baryon number violation, and supersymmetry at the LHC

Baryon number violating interactions could modify the signatures of supersymmetric models at the Large Hadron Collider. In this article we investigate the predictions for the Higgs mass and the Higgs decays in a simple extension of the minimal supersymmetric standard model where the local baryon and lepton numbers are spontaneously broken at the TeV scale. This theory predicts baryon number violation at the low scale which can change the current LHC bounds on the supersymmetric spectrum. Using the ATLAS and CMS bounds on the Higgs mass we show the constraints on the sfermion masses, and show the subsequent predictions for the radiative Higgs decays. We found that the Higgs decay into two photons is suppressed due to the existence of new light leptons. In this theory the stops can be very light in agreement with all experimental bounds and we make a brief discussion of the possible signals at the LHC

The Universal Tradition and the Clear Meaning of Scripture: Benjamin Keach’s Understanding of the Trinity

Leading Particular Baptist theologian Benjamin Keach (1640-1704) came to prom-inence just as an antitrinitarian theology native to England gained a stronghold. What had pre-viously been deemed off-limits by the Establishment became a commonplace by the end of the seventeenth century based on a strict biblicism that eschewed the extra-biblical language of trin-itarian orthodoxy. As one who considered himself a strong biblicist, Keach deftly maneuvered his theological writings between what he saw as two extremes: the one that refused to consider any language that moved beyond the mere words of scripture, represented by many of his Gen-eral Baptist contemporaries and the other that over-emphasized the role of tradition with no eye toward biblical truth, represented by the Roman Catholics. Keach’s explication of trinitarianism demonstrated that these two extremes did not have to be seen as competing with each other. Instead, the correct understanding of the Bible included ‘the just and necessary consequences’ that could be deduced from Scripture, and the ‘universal tradition’ aided the pastor theologian in ascertaining the truth. The result, for Keach and his audience, was an ancient view of trini-tarianism that offered a way of peace between the the two extremes vying for the public ear in the late seventeenth century
