Daylight performance of courtyard wall design at low-cost flat in the tropics

    Get PDF
Courtyard in a low-cost flat in the tropics provides daylight but it is usually protected with a corridor to control the solar radiation. Surrounded by a shaded corridor, daylight level of the adjacent dwelling rooms around the courtyard are reduced. Modification of courtyard wall by integrating a sloped light shelf is proposed to improve the daylight level on dwelling room and control excessive light penetration at the corridor. Experiment with simulation as a tool was used as a research method. Illuminance value, Daylight Factor and uniformity ratio of the base case, a courtyard wall design in a typical low-cost flat in Surabaya (latitude 71555S) using louver and case, a proposed courtyard wall design using sloped light shelf were compared, simultaneously with daylighting standards. The results demonstrated that courtyard wall modification reduced excessive average illuminance on the corridor in the range of 41% to 57.1% and improved average illuminance in dwelling room in the range of 0.9% to 19.2%. The proposed courtyard wall also increased illuminance uniformity ratio in both corridor and dwelling room. In order to improve daylight quantity and quality, a courtyard wall with sloped light shelf can be applied on a low-cost flat in the tropics

Architecture study could be seen as an ideal academic field for applying service-learning, since it requires skill and theoretical concepts for direct application to human situations and needs. And in fact, architecture study has long experience in learning by doing and has often come face to face with significant problems and issues, both professional and ethical. My course entitled \u27Housing, Informal Sector and Psychology\u27 applies service -learning approach, and is dedicated to encouraging architecture students to become socially responsible professionals by working on real design projects for local community. I prefer to choose one project for one class as individual project. I work with Habitat for Humanity, is a non -profit organization that very willing to work with me to identify service-learning opportunities. I am fortunate working together with Habitat for Humanity for many positive impacts for my students as a prospective architect. With Habitat, we join in their individual project that gives beneficial for several reasons, than in several project with man y partners. First, the projects are more manageable for the instructor because you are working with fewer community partners and projects. Also, because working on live projects is a new experience for most students, the collective previous experience of the group ten ds to make the transition from typical classroom activities easier. Second, Habitat is an international non-profit organization that focusing their interest in building homes, building lives, thus for architecture students is very beneficial. Further, I\u27ve found that students can make a more meaningful contribution to the community partner when working as a group because they can dedicate more time collectively to the project. As a result, they can learn how to be an architect for people in needs

Urbanization and urban land shortage are crucial issues that require different solutions in every country. Development of “vertical housing” (“owned and rental low-cost apartments”) is one of the alternatives to overcome the huge demand of urban housing, especially for low-income group. The design of “low-cost apartments” (‘rusuna’) in Jakarta with a floor area of apartment units (‘sarusun’ units) 18-24 m2 (private territory) inhabited by several family members, who can be seen putting their belongings on the corridor, “residual space”, and public space (public territory). These conditions finally establish patterns of behavior to adapt to the circumstances and environment that can lead to territorial issues, social conflict and “occupancy” of public space for private purposes. This research will study the sense of territoriality for residents and find the role of corridor in territorial meaning formation in ‘rusuna’ (‘rusunami’ and ‘rusunawa’), with a case study of the building block “A”, “owned low-cost apartments” (‘rusunami’) Bidara Cina in Jakarta, Indonesia. The research was conducted using qualitative methods through in-depth interviews to understand the territorial meaning, field observation, activities mapping the corridor “occupancy” for private purposes, as well as reviewing the related theories from literature and journal reviews about characteristics of the territoriality in architecture. The results found that the role of corridor as manifestation of the physical needs: need of space, culture & habit, economic necessity, agreement; and physiological needs: tolerance, security & safety, perception, togetherness, social interaction; has a great influence on the formation of territorial meaning in block “A” building ‘rusunami’ Bidara Cina, Jakarta, Indonesia

Designed as community service program Petra Christian University (Universitas Kristen Petra – UK Petra) and some international partners, Community Outreach Program (COP) was firstly established in 1995. It is an inter-discipline educational activity with an aim to give a learning experience by living in a community, to give response to the actual social life and to help developing the community. As part of the curriculum, COP is an effective means to raise students’ awareness regarding with community development. They are expected not only giving contribution to the community, but also gaining a better multicultural understanding among the participants themselves. For more than a decade, UK Petra has involved hundred local and international students to do real and direct service to the society. Further, UK Petra also collaborates with local governments and some overseas universities to conduct COP. From 1995-2003, UK Petra had partnered with local government of Magetan and Dongseo University (Korea), HongKong Baptist University and Inholland University (The Netherlands) to hold COP annually in Magetan (East Java). Then, since 2004 up to present, COP has served Kediri with more international partners, International Christian University (Japan), St. Andrew University (Japan) and Lingnan University (Hong Kong). The participants are involved in two kinds of projects during their stay in the village. First, physical projects, such as: renovating or constructing public facilities, and creating healthy environment health. Another project deals with non-physical issues, such as: sharing expertise through formal and non-formal education, exchanging cultural variety and building a nice bond and understanding. In 2007, Community Outreach Program (COP) recognized as an International Service-Learning. Afterwards, it leads into another recognition in 2009 from United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia (UBCHEA) who awarded a grant to Petra Christian University to conduct International Service-Learning Activity in a broader scope. Hence, COP is expected not only as the one-way program of serving community, but also a two-way learning process in a larger scope of internationalization. Overall, in a global context, COP is Paper presented as a nice media to learn about understanding in diversity, peace building issues, contribute life to empower others and become an inspiration
