The article presents the place of children’s literature in literary systems across time, regarding its position in the context of two key categories of the present-day discourse: the world literature and the global literature. Since in 1932 Paul Hazard proclaimed "the universal republic of childhood" in his Books, Children and Men, scholars such as Zohar Shavit or Emer O’Sullivan have discussed the changes concerning children’s literature itself as well as ways of approaching it

Spread of Eragrostis albensis (Poaceae) and Dittrichia graveolens (Asteraceae) in the southern Poland

New localities of Eragrostis albensis H. Scholz and Dittrichia graveolens (L.) Greuter have been found in the southern Poland. The former taxon is currently considered a kenophyte (epecophyte and holoagriophyte) in the country. It occurs on sandy alluvia along Vistula, Oder and San River Valleys as well as on anthropogenic sites mainly in the eastern and south-eastern Poland. The latter species is a recent newcomer regarded as an ephemerophyte, which so far has been reported from only one locality in Śląskie Province. In 2017 we discovered 16 new localities of E. albensis and five of D. graveolens on the territory of the southern Poland. Populations of both species consisted of few to several dozen individuals which grew within anthropogenic habitats, mainly roadsides. Changes in the physiological activity of soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) under the influence of exogenous growth regulators

In a two-year pot experiment (2008–2009) conducted at the Vegetation Hall, West Pomeranian University of Technology in Szczecin, we investigated the influence of exogenous growth regulators, i.e. indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) and 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) and their mixture, on the activity of gas exchange and selected physiological features of soybeans (Glycine max L. Merr.). The experimental factors included the following Polish soybean cultivars: ‘Aldana’, ‘Progres’ and ‘Jutro’. During plant growth, CO2 assimilation (A), transpiration rate (E), stomatal conductance (gs), and substomatal CO2 concentration (ci) were determined. Two soybean cultivars, i.e. ‘Jutro’ and ‘Progres’, showed a significant increase in the intensity of assimilation and transpiration after using all kinds of growth regulators as compared with the control plants. It was found that the ‘Jutro’ cultivar, after using a mixture of growth regulators (IBA + BAP), was characterized by the significantly highest CO2 assimilation (A) and transpiration (E) as well as the highest stomatal conductance (gs). The ‘Aldana’ cultivar, on the other hand, responded by a significant reduction in the transpiration rate, stomatal conductance and subsomatal CO2 concentration. The spraying of the plants with exogenous growth regulators had a significant influence on the increase in the number of stomata and stomatal pore length, mostly on the lower epidermis of the lamina. It was also found that plants from the ‘Jutro’ and ‘Aldana’ cultivars sprayed with IBA and IBA + BAP were characterized by the highest yield, as compared with the control plants. In the case of the ‘Jutro’ cultivar, after using the growth regulators, a positive correlation was observed between the assimilation and transpiration rates and the length of stomata, which in consequence produced increased yields

Celem artykułu jest zarysowanie obrazu południa Włoch, wyłaniającego się z twórczościGustawa Herlinga-Grudzińskiego, który, pozostając przez prawie 50 lat na emigracji w Neapolu,uczynił z tego miasta tło wielu opowiadań oraz temat rozważań zawartych w dziennikach.W pierwszej i drugiej części analiza skupia się na intrygujących pisarza zagadnieniach,jakimi są Śmierć i Tajemnica. Ostatni ustęp artykułu jest poświęcony poetyce pisarza.Analiza została przeprowadzona na podstawie dzieł Grudzińskiego wydanych w językupolskim, a także ich włoskich tłumaczeń. Wiele uwagi poświęcono Dziennikowi pisanemunocą, a także zbiorom opowiadań, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem takich tytułów, jak:Książę Niezłomny, Pietà d’Isola, Gruzy, Dżuma w Neapolu, Most, Cud, Wieża.W pierwszym ustępie artykułu rozważanie motywów śmierci i cierpienia – obsesyjniepowracających w twórczości pisarza, który sam przeżył kilka lat w „innym świecie” łagrówsowieckich – prowadzi do stwierdzenia, iż Południe, pomimo zakorzenionej w nim świadomościkruchości życia ludzkiego, nie jest miejscem niosącym pocieszenie dla człowiekanaznaczonego cierpieniem. Neapolitańczycy odnoszą się do śmierci wręcz z pewnego rodzajupoufałością i zażyłością. Fakt ten, wielokrotnie i ze zdumieniem podkreślany przez pisarza,musiał się kłócić z jego światopoglądem. Rozpacz i śmierć były bowiem pojmowane przezniego jako momenty prawdy, stawiające człowieka przed najważniejszymi wyborami. Artykułukazuje kilka rezultatów tego zderzenia światopoglądów. Osamotnienie, starość, cierpieniazwiązanie z miłością, konanie, niemoc w obliczu kataklizmów i epidemii stają się tematamiwielu „włoskich” opowiadań Grudzińskiego, a skontrastowanie ich ze słonecznąscenerią daje szczególnie dramatyczne efekty. Jednak uważny czytelnik musi dojść do wniosku,iż wszechobecne na Południu hałaśliwa radość życia i atmosfera beztroski są tylko pewnegorodzaju maskami, które znikają w obliczu rzeczywistego zagrożenia i że wobec śmiercii cierpienia każdy człowiek zachowuje się podobnie. Druga część artykułu dotyczy charakterystycznej dla mentalności południowej magiczności,mającej swe źródło w ludowych wierzeniach, które chcą wyjaśnić kwestie wymykającesię ludzkiemu pojmowaniu poprzez działanie sił ponadnaturalnych. Są to tematy ściśle związanez poprzednimi, jako że południowa cudowność stanowi pewnego rodzaju antidotum nalęk i cierpienie. Wiele miejsca zostało poświęcone przedstawieniu cudu św. Januarego, jakojedynego w swoim rodzaju zjawiska z pogranicza magii i religii. Analiza dotyczy też rolilegendy w życiu społeczeństw i wizji historii w twórczości Herlinga-Grudzińskiego. Dowodziona, że jest to twórczość do gruntu przeniknięta metafizyką i na wszystkich płaszczyznachusiłująca dochodzić sensu istnienia.Ta ostania kwestia zostaje podjęta w trzeciej części artykułu, której przedmiotem jest stylpisarza. Takie oddzielenie treści od formy jest umotywowane chęcią udowodnienia zawartejw tej części tezy, że również środki formalne w badanych utworach są podporządkowanejednemu celowi: dążeniu do odkrycia Tajemnicy życia i śmierci. Analiza ukazuje, jak – począwszyod pewnych wyborów na poziomie graficznym tekstu poprzez leksykę, środki stylistyczne,kompozycję, aż po poziom metatekstualny i intertekstualny – Grudziński konstruujeswoje opowiadania-przypowieści z zamiarem ukazania czytelnikowi, że za jego historiamikryje się coś więcej niż tylko chęć opowiedzenia zdarzeń

The article presents the functioning of prison libraries with special attention paid to legal aspects and the way of managing libraries, starting from building collections, developing and making them available. The importance of libraries in conducting educational and resocialization activities and implementing educational and resocialization programs is emphasized. Hydrogen sulfide generation from l-cysteine in the human glioblastoma-astrocytoma U-87 MG and neuroblastoma SHSY5Y cell lines

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is endogenously synthesized from l-cysteine in reactions catalyzed by cystathionine beta-synthase (CBS, EC 4.2.1.22) and gamma-cystathionase (CSE, EC 4.4.1.1). The role of 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase (MPST, EC 2.8.1.2) in H2S generation is also considered; it could be important for tissues with low CTH activity, e.g. cells of the nervous system. The expression and activity of CBS, CTH, and MPST were detected in the human glioblastoma-astrocytoma (U-87 MG) and neuroblastoma (SHSY5Y) cell lines. In both cell lines, the expression and activity of MPST were the highest among the investigated enzymes, suggesting its possible role in the generation of H2S. The RP-HPLC method was used to determine the concentration of cystathionine and alpha-ketobutyrate, products of the CBS- and CTH-catalyzed reactions. The difference in cystathionine levels between cell homogenates treated with totally CTH-inhibiting concentrations of dl-propargylglycine and without the inhibitor was used to evaluate the activity of CBS. The higher expression and activity of CBS, CTH and MPST in the neuroblastoma cells were associated with more intensive generation of H2S in the presence of 2 mM cysteine. A threefold higher level of sulfane sulfur, a potential source of hydrogen sulfide, was detected in the astrocytoma cells in comparison to the neuroblastoma cells
