Enhancing the heavy Higgs signal with jet-jet profile cuts

The jet-jet profile, or detailed manner, in which transverse energy and mass are distributed around the jet-jet system resulting from the hadronic decay of a ZZ boson in the process Higgs→ZZ\to ZZ at a proton-proton collider energy of 40\tev is carefully examined. Two observables are defined that can be used to help distinguish the ℓ+ℓ−\ell^+\ell^--jet-jet signal from Higgs decay from the ``ordinary'' QCD background arising from the large transverse momentum production of single ZZ bosons plus the associated jets. By making cuts on these observables, signal to background enhancement factors greater than 100100 can be obtained.Comment: 16 pages, Univ. Florida IFT-93-

Search for associated Higgs boson production using like charge dilepton events in p(p)over-bar collisions at root s=1.96 TeV

We present a search for associated Higgs boson production in the process p (p) over bar -> W/ZH -> l(+/-)l'(+/-) + X in ee, e mu, and mu mu final states. The search is based on data collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider at root s = 1.96 TeV corresponding to 5.3 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity. We require two isolated leptons (electrons or muons) with the same electric charge and additional kinematic requirements. No significant excess above background is observed, and we set 95% C. L. observed (expected) upper limits on ratio of the production cross section to the standard model prediction of 6.4 (7.3) for a Higgs boson mass of 165 GeV and 13.5 (19.8) for a mass of 115 GeV

Black Stork Down: Military Discourses in Bird Conservation in Malta

Tensions between Maltese hunters and bird conservation NGOs have intensified over the past decade. Conservation NGOs have become frustrated with the Maltese State for conceding to the hunter lobby and negotiating derogations from the European Union’s Bird Directive. Some NGOs have recently started to organize complex field-operations where volunteers are trained to patrol the landscape, operate drones and other surveillance technologies, detect illegalities, and lead police teams to arrest poachers. We describe the sophisticated military metaphors which conservation NGOs have developed to describe, guide and legitimize their efforts to the Maltese public and their fee-paying members. We also discuss why such groups might be inclined to adopt these metaphors. Finally, we suggest that anthropological studies of discourse could help understand delicate contexts such as this where conservation NGOs, hunting associations and the State have ended in political deadlock

Measurement of leptonic asymmetries and top-quark polarization in tt-bar production

This is the publisher's version, also available electronically from http://journals.aps.org/prd/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevD.87.011103.We present measurements of lepton (ℓ) angular distributions in top-quark (t) pair production and tt-bar→W+bW−b-bar→ℓ+νbℓ−ν-b-ar b-bar decays produced in pp-bar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of s√=1.96  TeV, where ℓ is an electron or muon. Using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4  fb(−1), collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, we measure for the first time the leptonic forward-backward asymmetry in dilepton final states and obtain A(ℓ)(FB)=(5.8±5.1(stat)±1.3(syst))%, corrected for detector acceptance. This is compared to the standard model prediction of A(ℓ)(FB)(predicted)=(4.7±0.1)%. A deviation from the standard model prediction as previously seen in a D0 measurement based on the analysis of the ℓ+jets final state is not observed in these dilepton final states. The two results differ from each other by 1.4 standard deviations and are combined to obtain A(ℓ)(FB)=(11.8±3.2)%. Furthermore, we present a first study of the top-quark polarization
