Two-pion decay modes of the N*(1440) in n p -> d pi pi
A simple model for the n p -> d pi pi reaction has been developed. It is
shown that the deuteron momentum spectra measured at T_n = 795 MeV can be
understood in terms of the Roper excitation and its N pi pi decay modes. A
similar pattern, recently observed in p p -> p p pi+ pi-, can be explained in
the same way.Comment: 3 pages, 5 figures. Presented at 16th International Conference on

Some Global Aspects of Duality is String Theory
We explore some of the global aspects of duality transformations in String
Theory and Field Theory. We analyze in some detail the equivalence of dual
models corresponding to different topologies at the level of the partition
function and in terms of the operator correspondence for abelian duality. We
analyze the behavior of the cosmological constant under these transformations.
We also explore several examples of non-abelian duality where the classical
background interpretation can be maintained for the original and the dual
theories. In particular we construct a non-abelian dual of which
turns out to be a three-dimensional black holeComment: 31pp. One figure available upon request. CERN-TH-6991/6
Analysis and applications of a general boresight algorithm for the DSS-13 beam waveguide antenna
A general antenna beam boresight algorithm is presented. Equations for axial pointing error, peak received signal level, and antenna half-power beamwidth are given. A pointing error variance equation is derived that illustrates the dependence of the measurement estimation performance on the various algorithm inputs, including RF signal level uncertainty. Plots showing pointing error uncertainty as function of algorithm inputs are presented. Insight gained from the performance analysis is discussed in terms of its application to the areas of antenna controller and receiver interfacing, pointing error compensation, and antenna calibrations. Current and planned applications of the boresight algorithm, including its role in the upcoming Ka-band downlink experiment (KABLE), are highlighted
An analysis of the least-squares problem for the DSN systematic pointing error model
A systematic pointing error model is used to calibrate antennas in the Deep Space Network. The least squares problem is described and analyzed along with the solution methods used to determine the model's parameters. Specifically studied are the rank degeneracy problems resulting from beam pointing error measurement sets that incorporate inadequate sky coverage. A least squares parameter subset selection method is described and its applicability to the systematic error modeling process is demonstrated on Voyager 2 measurement distribution
Theories of managerial action and their impact on the conceptualisation of executive careers.
In this paper I outline one of the developments in the social sciences and macro organizational theory that could be of special profit for academic work on careers. I argue that a theory of action perspective is timely because its assumptions fit extremely well with the heterogeneity and lability of today’s structures and the plurality and unpredictability they bring to careers. I suggest there are two basic potential contributions of theories of action to the field of careers. First, they endorse the relevance of the shift in the basic image of managers’ careers, from the analogy of an ascendant trajectory of positions, to that of an idiosyncratic sequence of experiences loosely related to an organisational architecture. Second, they reinforce Weick’s arguments (1996) that careers cannot be conceived of merely as a dependent variable, as just “following” structures. Both contributions spring from a notion of management work in theories of action as essentially local, tactical, and pragmatic, with enacting or social constructionist effects on structure and organizations.executive careers; structure; organizations;
Generalized Dirichlet Branes and Zero-modes
We investigate the effective dynamics of an arbitrary Dirichlet p-brane, in a
path-integral formalism, by incorporating the massless excitations of closed
string modes in open bosonic string theory. It is shown that the closed string
background fields in the bosonic sector of type II theories induce invariant
extrinsic curvature on the world-volume. In addition, the curvature can be seen
to be associated with a divergence at the boundary of string world-sheet. The
re-normalization of the collective coordinates, next to leading order in its
derivative expansion, is performed to handle the divergence and the effective
dynamics is encoded in Dirac-Born-Infeld action. Furthermore, the collective
dynamics is generalized to include appropriate fermionic partners in type I
super-string theory. The role of string modes is reviewed in terms of the
collective coordinates and the gauge theory on the world-volume is argued to be
non-local in presence of the U(1) invariant field strength.Comment: LaTex, 20 pages, v2: minor changes and added references v3:typos

More on softly broken N=2 QCD
We extend previous work on the soft breaking of supersymmetric QCD. We
present the formalism for the breaking due to a dilaton spurion for a general
gauge group and obtain the exact effective potential. We obtain some general
features of the vacuum structure in the pure Yang-Mills theory and we
also derive a general mass formula for this class of theories, in particular we
present explicit results for the mass spectrum in the case. Finally we
analyze the vacuum structure of the theory with one massless
hypermultiplet. This theory presents dyon condensation and a first order phase
transition in the supersymmetry breaking parameter driven by non-mutually local
BPS states. This could be a hint of Argyres-Douglas-like phases in
non-supersymmetric gauge theories.Comment: 35 pages, 9 Postscript figure
