    Employing biomimicry in Urban metamorphosis seeking for sustainability: Case studies

    Objective The current study has aimed to develop the framework of biomimicry involvement in urban metamorphosis for sustainability. This research has engaged four objectives to achieve the aim. Objective one is to explore the rudiment interaction between human and nature through interrogating history, nature's design. Objective two is to excavate the biomimicry in emulating nature's genius. Objective three is to investigate the association between biomimicry and sustainable development, focusing on architectural features. Objective four is to develop the framework based on the biomimicry rules for human evolution and survival in the natural environment. Methodology To achieve objective one, the grounded theory method was applied for scrutinizing human development and human awareness about their natural environment. To achieve objective two, an evidence study was conducted on the biomimicry emulation of nature's genius. To achieve objective three, a critical literature review was conducted using content analysis method to identify the biomimicry focus and architectural features. Through matrix development method, the focus and architectural features were tabulated. To achieve objective four, the waterfall framework design method and case studies were conducted to plot this framework. Conclusions This research gained a better understanding of biomimicry-based on theories of the evolution of organisms, including humans in the urban context, as measurement against sustainable benchmarks. It followed the paths of ecological researcher and urban philosophers, such as Freya Mathews and Moore, by re-versioned the human relationship with nature and the surrounding environment and observing human actions and development about life principles.In particular, the research found out that biomimicry is an approach that recently becomes the focus of many researchers of different disciplines seeking a solution for human problems. The biomimicry has been merged with sustainable architecture design through specific features; included, form and function, geometry, metaphor, movement, material, pattern, proportion, sustainability, and technology. Furthermore, biomimicry is an approach that involves nature as a model, mentor, and measure for inspiration, which converges law, principles, and strategies in the context of biomimicry-based on human evolution.     Neutronics Assessment of Accident-Tolerant Fuel in Advanced Power Reactor 1400 (APR1400)

    Safety and reliability are the most desirable conditions that each nuclear power plant should improve. Since the Fukushima Daiichi accident, Accident-Tolerant Fuel (ATF) has been extensively researched to improve the performance of the nuclear fuel system. This paper presents the investigation of the ATF system from a neutronics perspective, which positively reflects on the performance of the APR-1400 nuclear power plant. Several advanced fuel candidates such as UC, U3Si2, and UN, which have better thermophysical properties than current UO2 nuclear fuel, have been considered. Meanwhile, advanced cladding candidates such as FeCrAl, Zr-alloy with coating, and SiC which can reduce or even eliminate the oxidation rate of current Zr-alloy cladding have been adopted in this study. The Monte Carlo Serpent code, in conjunction with ENDF/B-VII.1 nuclear data library, has been used to calculate and evaluate the important neutronics parameters at the assembly level such as the fuel residence time, discharge burnup, kinetics parameters, pin power distribution, temperature reactivity feedbacks, and fissile evolution.     Learning to Think while Thinking to Learn: Promoting the Infusion of Critical and Creative Thinking in Today\u27s ICT Classrooms

    Traditional IT courses usually require enormous student motivation and perseverance with varying results. IT lecturers at UAE University’s University General Requirements Program tackled these problems by promoting a natural way of infusing creative and critical thinking in the classroom by structuring lessons where students manage their own thinking. Three main critical and creative thinking methodologies (Open Compare and Contrast, Focused Compare and Contrast, and Determining Parts-Whole Relationships) were used with five ICT sections (about 100 students). This paper describes the new lesson plans, their overall effectiveness, and future plans. It also discusses the impact of these lessons on student learning and also in terms of educational goals, contents, and assessment (periodic and terminal). The outcome of this research indicates that changes in ICT classroom teaching methods can help students become critical thinkers, able to search out, understand, analyze, and synthesize information

    Non-invasive single-cell biomechanical analysis using live-imaging datasets

    The physiological state of a cell is governed by a multitude of processes and can be described by a combination of mechanical, spatial and temporal properties. Quantifying cell dynamics at multiple scales is essential for comprehensive studies of cellular function, and remains a challenge for traditional end-point assays. We introduce an efficient, non-invasive computational tool that takes time-lapse images as input to automatically detect, segment and analyze unlabeled live cells; the program then outputs kinematic cellular shape and migration parameters, while simultaneously measuring cellular stiffness and viscosity. We demonstrate the capabilities of the program by testing it on human mesenchymal stem cells (huMSCs) induced to differentiate towards the osteoblastic (huOB) lineage, and T-lymphocyte cells (T cells) of naïve and stimulated phenotypes. The program detected relative cellular stiffness differences in huMSCs and huOBs that were comparable to those obtained with studies that utilize atomic force microscopy; it further distinguished naïve from stimulated T cells, based on characteristics necessary to invoke an immune response. In summary, we introduce an integrated tool to decipher spatiotemporal and intracellular dynamics of cells, providing a new and alternative approach for cell characterization

    Surveillance cues do not enhance altruistic behavior among anonymous strangers in the field

    The degree of altruistic behavior among strangers is an evolutionary puzzle. A prominent explanation is the evolutionary legacy hypothesis according to which an evolved reciprocity-based psychology affects behavior even when reciprocity is impossible, i.e., altruistic behavior in such instances is maladaptive. Empirical support for this explanation comes from laboratory experiments showing that surveillance cues, e.g., photographs of watching eyes, increase altruistic behavior. A competing interpretation for this evidence, however, is that the cues signal the experimenter’s expectations and participants, aware of being monitored, intentionally behave more altruistically to boost their reputation. Here we report the first results from a field experiment on the topic in which participants are unaware they are being monitored and reciprocity is precluded. The experiment investigates the impact of surveillance cues on a textbook example of altruistic behavior—hand hygiene prior to treating a ‘patient’. We find no evidence surveillance cues affect hand hygiene, despite using different measures of hand-hygiene quality and cues that have been previously shown to be effective. We argue that surveillance cues may have an effect only when participants have reasons to believe they are actually monitored. Thus they cannot support claims altruistic behavior between strangers is maladaptive

    Global Perspectives on Immunization During Pregnancy and Priorities for Future Research and Development: An International Consensus Statement

    Immunization during pregnancy has been recommended in an increasing number of countries. The aim of this strategy is to protect pregnant women and infants from severe infectious disease, morbidity and mortality and is currently limited to tetanus, inactivated influenza, and pertussis-containing vaccines. There have been recent advancements in the development of vaccines designed primarily for use in pregnant women (respiratory syncytial virus and group B Streptococcus vaccines). Although there is increasing evidence to support vaccination in pregnancy, important gaps in knowledge still exist and need to be addressed by future studies. This collaborative consensus paper provides a review of the current literature on immunization during pregnancy and highlights the gaps in knowledge and a consensus of priorities for future research initiatives, in order to optimize protection for both the mother and the infant
