Physical Multi-Layer Phantoms for Intra-Body Communications
This paper presents approaches to creating tissue mimicking materials that
can be used as phantoms for evaluating the performance of Body Area Networks
(BAN). The main goal of the paper is to describe a methodology to create a
repeatable experimental BAN platform that can be customized depending on the
BAN scenario under test. Comparisons between different material compositions
and percentages are shown, along with the resulting electrical properties of
each mixture over the frequency range of interest for intra-body
communications; 100 KHz to 100 MHz. Test results on a composite multi-layer
sample are presented confirming the efficacy of the proposed methodology. To
date, this is the first paper that provides guidance on how to decide on
concentration levels of ingredients, depending on the exact frequency range of
operation, and the desired matched electrical characteristics (conductivity vs.
permittivity), to create multi-layer phantoms for intra-body communication
applications
Corporate Governance for Banks in Pakistan: Recent Developments and Regional Comparisons
The emerging economies in the South Asian region have embarked on a bold reform process to develop the banking sector. This development has improved the transparency and accountability of the banking sector because these countries focused on ‘best practice’ corporate governance for banks. In view of a rapidly developing market with a slow pace of information dissemination, adverse selection and moral hazard problems are likely to be on the rise and may need a mechanism to train and discipline bank management. It was, therefore timely for the central banks in the region to introduce a ‘best practice’ for the banking system as a whole. This study provides a survey of recent developments in corporate governance of the banking sector in Pakistan and a comparison of similar developments in two other regional economies, namely, India and Bangladesh. In addition to a theoretical discussion on this issue, we also provide an overview of the banking sector restructuring and highlighting important features of the codes of corporate governance established by central banks in the sample countries. In conclusion, we present a comparison of the major differences in these measures across countries and comment on the pace of these developments.Corporate Governance, Banks, Pakistan

Detection of Aliphatically Bridged Multi-Core Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Sooting Flames with Atmospheric-Sampling High-Resolution Tandem Mass Spectrometry.
This paper provides experimental evidence for the chemical structures of aliphatically substituted and bridged polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) species in gas-physe combustion environments. The identification of these single- and multicore aromatic species, which have been hypothesized to be important in PAH growth and soot nucleation, was made possible through a combination of sampling gaseous constituents from an atmospheric pressure inverse coflow diffusion flame of ethylene and high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry (MS-MS). In these experiments, the flame-sampled components were ionized using a continuous VUV lamp at 10.0 eV and the ions were subsequently fragmented through collisions with Ar atoms in a collision-induced dissociation (CID) process. The resulting fragment ions, which were separated using a reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometer, were used to extract structural information about the sampled aromatic compounds. The high-resolution mass spectra revealed the presence of alkylated single-core aromatic compounds and the fragment ions that were observed correspond to the loss of saturated and unsaturated units containing up to a total of 6 carbon atoms. Furthermore, the aromatic structures that form the foundational building blocks of the larger PAHs were identified to be smaller single-ring and pericondensed aromatic species with repetitive structural features. For demonstrative purposes, details are provided for the CID of molecular ions at masses 202 and 434. Insights into the role of the aliphatically substituted and bridged aromatics in the reaction network of PAH growth chemistry were obtained from spatially resolved measurements of the flame. The experimental results are consistent with a growth mechanism in which alkylated aromatics are oxidized to form pericondensed ring structures or react and recombine with other aromatics to form larger, potentially three-dimensional, aliphatically bridged multicore aromatic hydrocarbons

Minimizing the Age of Information in Wireless Networks with Stochastic Arrivals
We consider a wireless network with a base station serving multiple traffic
streams to different destinations. Packets from each stream arrive to the base
station according to a stochastic process and are enqueued in a separate (per
stream) queue. The queueing discipline controls which packet within each queue
is available for transmission. The base station decides, at every time t, which
stream to serve to the corresponding destination. The goal of scheduling
decisions is to keep the information at the destinations fresh. Information
freshness is captured by the Age of Information (AoI) metric.
In this paper, we derive a lower bound on the AoI performance achievable by
any given network operating under any queueing discipline. Then, we consider
three common queueing disciplines and develop both an Optimal Stationary
Randomized policy and a Max-Weight policy under each discipline. Our approach
allows us to evaluate the combined impact of the stochastic arrivals, queueing
discipline and scheduling policy on AoI. We evaluate the AoI performance both
analytically and using simulations. Numerical results show that the performance
of the Max-Weight policy is close to the analytical lower bound
Hyperbolic Metamaterial Resonator-Antenna Scheme for Large, Broadband Emission Enhancement and Single Photon Collection
We model the broadband enhancement of single-photon emission from color
centres in silicon carbide nanocrystals coupled to a planar hyperbolic
metamaterial, HMM resonator. The design is based on positioning the single
photon emitters within the HMM resonator, made of a dielectric index-matched
with silicon-carbide material. The broadband response results from the
successive resonance peaks of the lossy Fabry Perot structure modes arising
within the high-index HMM cavity. To capture this broadband enhancement in the
single photon emitters spontaneous emission, we placed a simple gold based
cylindrical antenna on top of the HMM resonator. We analyzed the performance of
this HMM coupled antenna structure in terms of the Purcell enhancement, quantum
efficiency, collection efficiency and overall collected photon rate. For
perpendicular dipole orientation relative to the interface, the HMM coupled
antenna resonator leads to a significantly large spontaneous emission
enhancement with Purcell factor of the order of 250 along with a very high
average total collected photon rate, CPR of about 30 over a broad emission
spectrum, 700 nm to 1000 nm. The peak CPR increases to about 80 at 900 nm,
corresponding to the emission of silicon-carbide quantum emitters. This is a
state of the art improvement considering the previous computational designs
have reported a maximum average CPR of 25 across the nitrogen-vacancy centre
emission spectrum, 600 nm to 800 nm with the highest value being about 40 at
650 nm
Evolving spiking neural networks for temporal pattern recognition in the presence of noise

In the present work, we explore how networks of spiking neurons can be evolved to recognize temporal input patterns without being able to adjust signal conduction delays. We evolve the networks with GReaNs, an artificial life platform that encodes the topology of the network (and the weights of connections) in a fashion inspired by the encoding of gene regulatory networks in biological genomes. The number of computational nodes or connections is not limited in GReaNs, but here we limit the size of the networks to analyze the functioning of the networks and the effect of network size on the evolvability of robustness to noise. Relationship of blood pressure, antihypertensive therapy, and outcome in ischemic stroke treated with intravenous thrombolysis: retrospective analysis from Safe Implementation of Thrombolysis in Stroke-International Stroke Thrombolysis Register (SITS-ISTR)
<p><b>Background and Purpose:</b> The optimal management of blood pressure (BP) in acute stroke remains unclear. For ischemic stroke treated with intravenous thrombolysis, current guidelines suggest pharmacological intervention if systolic BP exceeds 180 mm Hg. We determined retrospectively the association of BP and antihypertensive therapy with clinical outcomes after stroke thrombolysis.</p>
<p><b>Methods:</b> The SITS thrombolysis register prospectively recorded 11 080 treatments from 2002 to 2006. BP values were recorded at baseline, 2 hours, and 24 hours after thrombolysis. Outcomes were symptomatic (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score deterioration ≥4) intracerebral hemorrhage Type 2, mortality, and independence at (modified Rankin Score 0 to 2) 3 months. Patients were categorized by history of hypertension and antihypertensive therapy within 7 days after thrombolysis: Group 1, hypertensive treated with antihypertensives (n=5612); Group 2, hypertensive withholding antihypertensives (n=1573); Group 3, without history of hypertension treated with antihypertensives (n=995); and Group 4, without history of hypertension not treated with antihypertensives (n=2632). For 268 (2.4%) patients, these data were missing. Average systolic BP 2 to 24 hours after thrombolysis was categorized by 10-mm Hg intervals with 100 to 140 used as a reference.</p>
<p><b>Results:</b> In multivariable analysis, high systolic BP 2 to 24 hours after thrombolysis as a continuous variable was associated with worse outcome (P<0.001) and as a categorical variable had a linear association with symptomatic hemorrhage and a U-shaped association with mortality and independence with systolic BP 141 to 150 mm Hg associated with most favorable outcomes. OR (95% CI) from multivariable analysis showed no difference in symptomatic hemorrhage (1.09 [0.83 to 1.51]; P=0.58) and independence (1.03 [0.93 to 1.10]; P=0.80) but lower mortality (0.82 [0.73 to 0.92]; P=0.0007) for Group 1 compared with Group 4. Group 2 had a higher symptomatic hemorrhage (1.86 [1.34 to 2.68]; P=0.0004) and mortality (1.62 [1.41 to 1.85]; P<0.0001) and lower independence (0.89 [0.80 to 0.99]; P=0.04) compared with Group 4. Group 3 had similar results as Group 1.</p>
<p><b>Conclusions:</b> There is a strong association of high systolic BP after thrombolysis with poor outcome. Withholding antihypertensive therapy up to 7 days in patients with a history of hypertension was associated with worse outcome, whereas initiation of antihypertensive therapy in newly recognized moderate hypertension was associated with a favorable outcome.</p>
Contributing Factors to Under-Five Child Malnutrition in Rural Bangladesh
Background and objectives: Bangladesh has the highest malnutrition rates in the world. The main objective of this study is to identify and determine the main factors for child malnutrition among children under the age 5 years in rural Bangladesh.
Material and methods: This research was conducted in rural areas at Meherpur district in Bangladesh. Convenience sampling method is used and 85 under 5 child information is collected through a structured questionnaire. The information’s of child’s are gathered from the mothers of the child. Malnourished children is measured by using APLS method and WHO Child Growth Standard Median Index. Binary logistic regression model is used to find out the key factors of malnutrition.
Results: It is found that family income, maintain proper diet during pregnancy period, proper diet maintain for children have negative significant (p\u3c0.05) effect on child malnutrition.
Conclusion: The magnitude of the child’s malnutrition still is of great concern in Bangladesh. Since, poverty, imbalanced diet during pregnancy period and imbalanced diet for under 5 children influences to malnutrition are significantly associated with high prevalence of malnutrition, so government and people should reduce these factor to reduce malnutrition in rural area of Bangladesh
