Polysemy and word meaning: an account of lexical meaning for different kinds of content words
There is an ongoing debate about the meaning of lexical words, i.e., words that contribute with content to the meaning of sentences. This debate has coincided with a renewal in the study of polysemy, which has taken place in the psycholinguistics camp mainly. There is already a fruitful interbreeding between two lines of research: the theoretical study of lexical word meaning, on the one hand, and the models of polysemy psycholinguists present, on the other. In this paper I aim at deepening on this ongoing interbreeding, examine what is said about polysemy, particularly in the psycholinguistics literature, and then show how what we seem to know about the representation and storage of polysemous senses affects the models that we have about lexical word meaning
What words mean and express: semantics and pragmatics of kind terms and verbs
For many years, it has been common-ground in semantics and in philosophy of language that semantics is in the business of providing a full explanation about how propositional meanings are obtained. This orthodox picture seems to be in trouble these days, as an increasing number of authors now hold that semantics does not deal with thought-contents. Some of these authors have embraced a “thin meanings” view, according to which lexical meanings are too schematic to enter propositional contents. I will suggest that it is plausible to adopt thin semantics for a class of words. However, I’ll also hold that some classes of words, like kind terms, plausibly have richer lexical meanings, and so that an adequate theory of word meaning may have to combine thin and rich semantics
Analisis Pengendalian Piutang terhadap Penagihan Piutang Arus Kas Pt.cowell Development Tbk
This study aims to analyze the control of receivables on the collection of cash flowreceivables at PT.Cowell Development Tbk. The data analysis technique used inthis research is descriptive qualitative method. Qualitative descriptive analysis isa data analysis technique that is done by collecting data, clarifying data, explaining and analyzing so that it provides information and images that areappropriate to the problem being faced or researched. Sources of data in thestudy used are secondary data sources and primary data. From the results of thestudy show that the control of receivables is the billing process with a long time tothe bills that are due. PT. Cowell Development Tbk must be more active in thecollection of receivables so that the balance of the amount of receivables is nottoo large so that it will affect the effectiveness of cash flow
International Risk Sharing and the Irish Economy
This paper studies international risk sharing in Ireland focusing on the 1970-2007 period. To this end, we assess how consumption and national income have been affected by idiosyncratic output shocks. The study of the former shows that private consumption was partially insulated from output shocks and that risk sharing was invariant over time. The analysis of national income provides further evidence for international risk sharing. Here, we find that national income fluctuations were not fully affected by output shocks and that income risk sharing improved as Ireland became more integrated with the international financial system.Ireland, international risk sharing
Phenomenology of a SU(2) triplet Higgs.
We study the Renormalization Group (RG) evolution of the couplings in
a model with a real SU(2) triplet in the Higgs sector. Insisting that the
model remain valid up to 1 TeV we show that it is possible for there to
be no light Higgs bosons without any otherwise dramatic deviation from
the physics of the Standard Model
Making Regional Economic Integration Work
The world has been witnessing a wave of regionalism in recent years. Preferential trade arrangements (PTAs) have been a central element of most regional agreements. This paper looks at the growing international experience with PTAs. It first provides some basic facts on the extent of regionalism and discusses the motives for entering into regional arrangements. This is followed by an analysis of the impact of PTAs on trade, growth, and welfare, based on traditional and new trade theories. Although the paper finds that empirical studies seem to conclude that in practice PTAs are not harmful or necessarily very beneficial, the main conclusion of the paper is that regional integration can work if done right, and can be pursued in parallel with, or as a stepping-stone towards, multilateral trade liberalisation. The paper provides four major recommendations to ensure that PTAs have a positive impact on member (and nonmember) countries. These include: (i) a large and diverse membership; (ii) continued reduction in external tariffs; (iii) comprehensive product coverage, with simple and transparent rules of origin; and (iv) effective implementation.Regional Economic
Environmental stress upon hepatopancreatic cells of freshwater prawns (Decapoda: Caridea) from the floodplain of Paraná River
In order to evaluate the influence of stressed environments on hepatopancreatic cells of freshwater prawns, Macrobachium borellii Nobili, 1896 and Palaemonetes argentinus Nobili 1901, (Crustacea, Decapoda, Palaemonidae) were collected at three different aquatic environments with different relationship to urban development in Argentina. Furthermore the effects of several cypermethryn concentration on hepatopancreatic cell of M. borellii and P. argentinus were evaluated in a laboratory assays. The "N° 1" lake (Santa Fe Argentina) which is more affected by the anthropogenic pressure and "Don Felipe" lake which is still not strongly by human activities were the studied sites from the floodplain of Paraná river. While Alejandra lake was the intermedia effects sites. Different damaged ultrastructures were found in F- and R-cells of prawns in the stressed lake. The predominant features were: disrupted the microvillous border, swelled mitochondria, reduction of endoplasmic reticulum, dyctiosomes, glycoproteins, desnaturalization of vacuole membrane and premature autolysis. Moreover the F-cell number was higher in the environment near to city than in the others sites. Similar effects were observed in the cypermethryn assays. The observations clearly indicate that the ultrastructure of midgut gland in the both palaemonids varies depending on the site from which animals are collected and the biocid presence. So, in this case it can be stated that the hepatopancreas histology of freshwater prawns is a good tool to monitor the impact of a stressed environment upon freshwater prawns.Fil: Collins, Pablo Agustin.
