Small GTPase ‘Rop’: molecular switch for plant defense responses
AbstractThe conserved Rho family of GTPases (Rho, Rac, and Cdc42) in fungi and mammals has emerged as a key regulator of diverse cellular activities, such as cytoskeletal rearrangements, programmed cell death, stress-induced signaling, and cell growth and differentiation. In plants, a unique class of Rho-like proteins, most closely related to mammalian Rac, has only been found and termed ‘Rop’ (Rho-related GTPase from plant [Li et al. (1998) Plant Physiol. 118, 407–417; Yang (2002) Plant Cell 14, S375–S388]). ROPs have been implicated in regulating various plant cellular responses including defense against pathogens. It has been shown that ROPs, like mammalian Rac, trigger hydrogen peroxide production and hence the ‘oxidative burst’, a crucial component associated with the cell death, most likely via activation of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase in both monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous species. Recent studies have established that ROPs also function as a molecular switch for defense signaling pathway(s) linked with disease resistance. As discerning the defense pathway remains one of the priority research areas in the field of plant biology, this review is therefore particularly focused on recent progresses that have been made towards understanding the plant defense responses mediated by ROPs
INPPO actions and recognition as a driving force for progress in plant proteomics: Change of guard, INPPO update, and upcoming activities
The International Plant Proteomics Organization (INPPO) is a non-profit organization whose members are scientists involved or interested in plant proteomics. Since the publication of the first INPPO highlights in 2012, continued progress on many of the organization’s mandates/goals has been achieved. Two major events are emphasized in this second INPPO highlights. First, the change of guard at the top, passing of the baton from Dominique Job, INPPO founding President to Ganesh Kumar Agrawal as the incoming President. Ganesh K. Agrawal, along with Dominique Job and Randeep Rakwal initiated the INPPO. Second, the most recent INPPO achievements and future targets, mainly the organization of first the INPPO World Congress in 2014, tentatively planned for Hamburg (Germany), are mentioned.Web of Scienc
Cataract Surgery in Uveitis
Cataract surgery in uveitic eyes is often challenging and can result in intraoperative and postoperative complications. Most uveitic patients enjoy good vision despite potentially sight-threatening complications, including cataract development. In those patients who develop cataracts, successful surgery stems from educated patient selection, careful surgical technique, and aggressive preoperative and postoperative control of inflammation. With improved understanding of the disease processes, pre- and perioperative control of inflammation, modern surgical techniques, availability of biocompatible intraocular lens material and design, surgical experience in performing complicated cataract surgeries, and efficient management of postoperative complications have led to much better outcome. Preoperative factors include proper patient selection and counseling and preoperative control of inflammation. Meticulous and careful cataract surgery in uveitic cataract is essential in optimizing the postoperative outcome. Management of postoperative complications, especially inflammation and glaucoma, earlier rather than later, has also contributed to improved outcomes. This manuscript is review of the existing literature and highlights the management pearls in tackling complicated cataract based on medline search of literature and experience of the authors
Differences in Clinical Features According to Boryoung and Karp Genotypes of Orientia tsutsugamushi
Scrub typhus is an infectious disease caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi. The differences in virulence of O. tsutsugamushi prototypes in humans are still unknown. We investigated whether there are any differences in the clinical features of the Boryoung and Karp genotypes.Patients infected with O. tsutsugamushi, as Boryoung and Karp clusters, who had visited 6 different hospitals in southwestern Korea were prospectively compared for clinical features, complications, laboratory parameters, and treatment responses. Infected patients in the Boryoung cluster had significantly more generalized weakness, eschars, skin rashes, conjunctival injection, high albumin levels, and greater ESR and fibrinogen levels compared to the Karp cluster. The treatment response to current antibiotics was significantly slower in the Karp cluster as compared to the Boryoung cluster.The frequency of occurrence of eschars and rashes may depend on the genotype of O. tsutsugamushi
Large Scale Benchmark of Materials Design Methods
Lack of rigorous reproducibility and validation are major hurdles for
scientific development across many fields. Materials science in particular
encompasses a variety of experimental and theoretical approaches that require
careful benchmarking. Leaderboard efforts have been developed previously to
mitigate these issues. However, a comprehensive comparison and benchmarking on
an integrated platform with multiple data modalities with both perfect and
defect materials data is still lacking. This work introduces
JARVIS-Leaderboard, an open-source and community-driven platform that
facilitates benchmarking and enhances reproducibility. The platform allows
users to set up benchmarks with custom tasks and enables contributions in the
form of dataset, code, and meta-data submissions. We cover the following
materials design categories: Artificial Intelligence (AI), Electronic Structure
(ES), Force-fields (FF), Quantum Computation (QC) and Experiments (EXP). For
AI, we cover several types of input data, including atomic structures,
atomistic images, spectra, and text. For ES, we consider multiple ES
approaches, software packages, pseudopotentials, materials, and properties,
comparing results to experiment. For FF, we compare multiple approaches for
material property predictions. For QC, we benchmark Hamiltonian simulations
using various quantum algorithms and circuits. Finally, for experiments, we use
the inter-laboratory approach to establish benchmarks. There are 1281
contributions to 274 benchmarks using 152 methods with more than 8 million
data-points, and the leaderboard is continuously expanding. The

A window into fungal endophytism in Salicornia europaea: deciphering fungal characteristics as plant growth promoting agents
Aim Plant-endophytic associations exist only when equilibrium is maintained between both partners. This study analyses the properties of endophytic fungi
inhabiting a halophyte growing in high soil salinity and tests whether these fungi are beneficial or detrimental when non-host plants are inoculated.
Method Fungi were isolated from Salicornia europaea collected from two sites differing in salinization history (anthropogenic and naturally saline) and analyzed for plant growth promoting abilities and non-host plant interactions.
Results Most isolated fungi belonged to Ascomycota (96%) including dematiaceous fungi and commonly known plant pathogens and saprobes. The strains were
metabolically active for siderophores, polyamines and indole-3-acetic acid (mainly Aureobasidium sp.) with very low activity for phosphatases. Many showed proteolytic, lipolytic, chitinolytic, cellulolytic and amylolytic activities but low pectolytic activity. Different activities between similar fungal species found in both sites were particularly seen for Epiccocum sp., Arthrinium sp. and
Trichoderma sp. Inoculating the non-host Lolium perenne with selected fungi increased plant growth, mainly in the symbiont (Epichloë)-free variety.
Arthrinium gamsii CR1-9 and Stereum gausapatum ISK3-11 were most effective for plant growth promotion.
Conclusions This research suggests that host lifestyle and soil characteristics have a strong effect on endophytic fungi, and environmental stress could disturb the
plant-fungi relations. In favourable conditions, these fungi may be effective in facilitating crop production in non-cultivable saline lands
