True crime novel. Between literature and journalism

Publikacja jest zbiorem artykułów eksplorujących relacje między dziennikarstwem a literaturą z różnych perspektyw i w różnych obszarach językowych. Wobec postępującej w ostatnich dziesięcioleciach kontaminacji między dziennikarstwem a literaturą autorzy tekstów pochylają się nad historycznymi związkami między badanymi dziedzinami (począwszy od starożytności do czasów najbardziej współczesnych), stawiają pytania dotyczące kontekstów kulturowych determinujących badaną ekspresję, przyglądają się typowym dla niej środkom wyrazu, wychwytują nieuniknioną hybrydyzację form oraz kreślą sylwetki konkretnych dziennikarzy-pisarzy. Wartością dodaną jest zderzenie perspektyw badawczych w odniesieniu do różnych kręgów kulturowych (hiszpański, latynoamerykański, francuski, bułgarski, polski, amerykański, angielski, germański, klasyczny, włoski). Takie ujęcie prowadzi do wieloaspektowej problematyzacji niezwykle aktualnego wymiaru współczesnej kultury.Artykuł jest próbą zdefiniowania true crime novel w kontekście relacji pomiędzy literaturą piękną a dziennikarstwem. Autorka przygląda się „powieści o prawdziwej zbrodni” w szerokim ujęciu kulturowym, doszukując się pierwszych realizacji gatunku w kryminalnych biografiach i inspirowanych Kalendarzem Newgate tzw. Newgate novel (prototyp powieści społecznej). Zestawienie współczesnych realizacji gatunku – upowieściowionego lub zbeletryzowanego reportażu spopularyzowanego przez Trumana Capote’a (Z zimną krwią) i Normana Mailera (Pieśń kata) oraz powieści inspirowanej faktami, ale niezawierającej z czytelnikiem paktu faktograficznego – pozwala na pokazanie dwóch odmian true crime novel: o dominancie literackiej oraz o dominancie dziennikarskiej.The paper tries to define the true crime novel in the context of the relation between the literature and the journalism. The author looks at the fact-based crime literature against the wide cultural background seeking the first realizations of this genre in criminal biographies and the socalled Newgate Novel inspired by the Newgate Calendar. The juxtaposition of the contemporary genre realizations – the novelized or beletrized reportage popularized by Truman Capote (In Cold Blood) and Norman Mailer (The Executioner’s Song) and the novel inspired by true events but not fulfilling the factographic pact with the reader – allows presenting the two types of the true crime novel – one characterized by the literary dominant, the other by the journalistic dominant

The Limits of Creativity in Reportage

The aim of the article is to present the problem of invention in Polish contemporary narrative journalism. The analysis of creative non-fiction books written by Katarzyna Surmiak-Domańska, Jacek Hugo-Bader and Wojciech Jagielski helps to distinguish the levels of invention (e.g. incorporating elements of fantastic or realistic fiction, creating events in undercover journalism) in this literary-journalistic genre. While comparing the chosen examples, the author tries to show whether/ in what conditions fabricated or exaggerated facts lead to breaking a factographic pact between writer and reader

Fallen Celebrity. On One of the Self-Promotional Strategies, Based on Polish Postmodern Silvas and Literary Discussions

The article deals with the phenomenon of literary celebrity — one of the self-promotional strategies that help Polish authors, who write in the „media time”, appear in the mainstream. After 1996, the mass media (mainly commercial press and television) set up bestsellers in Poland and let authors become stars (the examples of media careers of Jerzy Pilch, Wojciech Kuczok, Dorota Masłowska or Michał Witkowski are presented, to name only a few). After a decade of torn by desire to be an authority or celebrity Polish writers are beginning to turn away from the mass media. The influence of commercial television and popular press in Polish literary life is covered in quasi-autobiographical postmodern silvas (Michał Witkowski’s Margot and Drwal, Dorota Masłowska’s The Queen’s Peacock, Sławomir Shuty’s Jaszczur), in which the author is shown as a „personality” created by media, frozen image and product

Biografia reporterska w ujęciu komunikacyjnym na przykładzie książek Angeliki Kuźniak

Biography of the journalist in communication aspect on the example of books by Angelika Kuźniak This paper attempts to legitimize and distinguish the journalistic variant of biographical writing from other functional forms, including scholarly and literary biography. The presence of the term „journalistic biography” in the professional and amateur criticism is a manifestation of the readers’ awareness of genre theory and understanding a genre as a communicational convention. This kind of perception is closely related to the phenomenon called „horizons of expectations” and the particular pact made between the author and the reader. Focusing on Angelika Kuźniak’s works, the paper shows the specific role of a reporter being the biographer and a biographer being the reporter. The analysis of Kuźniak’s biographical books (Marlene, Papusza and Stryjeńska) and reportage (Mam bardzo cienkie powieki) helps to recognize the differences between the biographical reportage and the journalistic biographical story. Following this distinction, the paper suggests that the term „journalistic biography” should be considered as a name of the group of genres and discourses related to the functional styles or, in other words, a specific transmitter–receiver situation.

Virocentric Documentary Narratives with Themes of „Dark Biology”

This paper discuses an eco-apocalyptic non-fiction, which can be described as dark biology (referring to dark fantasy, dark science-fiction or noir crime fiction). The analysis is focused on Richard Preston’s, David Quamenn’s, Karl Taro Freenfeld’s and Nathan Wolfe’s medical/scientific nonfiction and heroic-exploratory narratives. The authors of dark narratives about viruses use the motives typical of crime, thriller, horror or sensation fiction. The magical ironist : on "Shamanic Disease" by Jacek Hugo-Bader

Celem artykułu jest analiza "Szamańskiej choroby" Jacka Hugo-Badera, rozpatrywanej jako reportażowa realizacja konwencji realizmu magicznego. Problematyzowanie i tematyzowanie wiary (a nie faktów i prowadzącego do ich poznania "researchu") nie powoduje zerwania paktu referencjalnego dzięki ironicznej autokreacji podmiotu reporterskiego. Studium przypadku wpisuje się w dyskusje na temat literackiego reportażu, śmiało łączącego dziennikarskość z "licentia poetica", oraz postulowanego przez Melchiora Wańkowicza "poszerzenia konwencji" tego gatunku. Uruchamiane w kontekście literatury faktu kategorie fikcji realistycznej i fikcji fantastycznej uzupełniam o element trzeci: fikcję magiczną, odnosząc się m.in. do współczesnych teorii etnografii performatywnej.The purpose of this paper is to analyze Jacek Hugo-Bader's novel reportage "Shamanic Disease" ("Szamańska choroba") understood as a blend of reportage and the conventions of magical realism. By utilizing ironic self-creation of the narrator in the reportage, Hugo-Bader's discussion of belief in terms of problematization and thematization rather than as a fact-finding process through research does not violate the referential pact. The case study is a part of the discussion on both the literary reportage, which boldly combines the elements of journalism with licentia poetica, and on Melchior Wańkowicz's "extension of the convention" of the reportage genre in Poland. In addition to the categories of realistic fiction and fantastic fiction - understood in the context of non-fiction - this paper will discuss a third element: magical fiction, which will be related to contemporary theories of performative ethnography
