Sosa versus Kornblith on Grades of Knowledge
In a series of works Ernest Sosa (see Sosa 1991, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2015, 2017) has defended the view that there are two kinds or ‘grades’ of knowledge, animal and reflective. One of the most persistent critics of Sosa’s attempts to bifurcate knowledge is Hilary Kornblith (see Kornblith 2004, 2009, 2012). Our aim in this paper is to outline and evaluate Kornblith’s criticisms. We will argue that, while they raise a range of difficult (exegetical and substantive) questions about Sosa’s ‘bi-level’ epistemology, Sosa has the resources to adequately respond to all of them. Thus, this paper is a (qualified) defence of Sosa’s bi-level epistemology

Interactive intelligence: behaviour-based AI, musical HCI and the Turing Test
The field of behaviour-based artificial intelligence (AI), with its roots in the robotics research of Rodney Brooks, is not predominantly tied to linguistic interaction in the sense of the classic Turing test (or, "imitation game"). Yet, it is worth noting, both are centred on a behavioural model of intelligence. Similarly, there is no intrinsic connection between musical AI and the language-based Turing test, though there have been many attempts to forge connections between them. Nonetheless, there are aspects of musical AI and the Turing test that can be considered in the context of non-language-based interactive environments–-in particular, when dealing with real-time musical AI, especially interactive improvisation software. This paper draws out the threads of intentional agency and human indistinguishability from Turing’s original 1950 characterisation of AI. On the basis of this distinction, it considers different approaches to musical AI. In doing so, it highlights possibilities for non-hierarchical interplay between human and computer agents
Dequantizing read-once quantum formulas
Quantum formulas, defined by Yao [FOCS '93], are the quantum analogs of
classical formulas, i.e., classical circuits in which all gates have fanout
one. We show that any read-once quantum formula over a gate set that contains
all single-qubit gates is equivalent to a read-once classical formula of the
same size and depth over an analogous classical gate set. For example, any
read-once quantum formula over Toffoli and single-qubit gates is equivalent to
a read-once classical formula over Toffoli and NOT gates. We then show that the
equivalence does not hold if the read-once restriction is removed. To show the
power of quantum formulas without the read-once restriction, we define a new
model of computation called the one-qubit model and show that it can compute

The impact of fire suppression tasks on firefighter hydration: A critical review with consideration of the utility of reported hydration measures
BACKGROUND: Firefighting is a highly stressful occupation with unique physical challenges, apparel and environments that increase the potential for dehydration. Dehydration leaves the firefighter at risk of harm to their health, safety and performance. The purpose of this review was to critically analyse the current literature investigating the impact of fighting ‘live’ fires on firefighter hydration. METHODS: A systematic search was performed of four electronic databases for relevant published studies investigating the impact of live fire suppression on firefighter hydration. Study eligibility was assessed using strict inclusion and exclusion criteria. The included studies were critically appraised using the Downs and Black protocol and graded according to the Kennelly grading system. RESULTS: Ten studies met the eligibility criteria for this review. The average score for methodological quality was 55 %, ranging from 50 % (‘fair’ quality) to 61 % (‘good’ quality) with a ‘substantial agreement’ between raters (k = .772). Wildfire suppression was considered in five studies and structural fire suppression in five studies. Results varied across the studies, reflecting variations in outcome measures, hydration protocols and interventions. Three studies reported significant indicators of dehydration resulting from structural fire suppression, while two studies found mixed results, with some measures indicating dehydration and other measures an unchanged hydration status. Three studies found non-significant changes in hydration resulting from wildfire firefighting and two studies found significant improvements in markers of hydration. Ad libitum fluid intake was a common factor across the studies finding no, or less severe, dehydration. CONCLUSIONS: The evidence confirms that structural and wildfire firefighting can cause dehydration. Ad libitum drinking may be sufficient to maintain hydration in many wildfire environments but possibly not during intense, longer duration, hot structural fire operations. Future high quality research better quantifying the effects of these influences on the degree of dehydration is required to inform policies and procedures that ensure firefighter health and safety
Twisted Electromagnetic Modes and Sagnac Ring-Lasers
A new approximation scheme, designed to solve the covariant Maxwell equations
inside a rotating hollow slender conducting cavity (modelling a ring-laser), is
constructed. It is shown that for well-defined conditions there exist TE and TM
modes with respect to the longitudinal axis of the cavity. A twisted mode
spectrum is found to depend on the integrated Frenet torsion of the cavity and
this in turn may affect the Sagnac beat frequency induced by a non-zero
rotation of the cavity. The analysis is motivated by attempts to use
ring-lasers to measure terrestrial gravito-magnetism or the Lense-Thirring
effect produced by the rotation of the Earth.Comment: LaTeX 31 pages, 3 Figure
The contextual nature of the market orientation and organisational performance relationship: an Australian and New Zealand study
As part of a broader study of the relationship between traditional and online marketing mix elements and organisational performance, the study reported in this paper utilised structural equation modelling to examine the relationship between market orientation and organisational performance. The study found that there was an insignificant relationship between market orientation and organisational performance, thereby lending support to studies conducted in the UK, Ghana, and the US (since the studies in the US by Narver and Slater (1990)), which found that there may be a contextual nature to the relationship between the two constructs. The study, therefore, does not support Pulendran et al. (2000).<br /
Experiential dimensions in internet marketing : an exploratory investigation
This paper examines the dimensions of an experience in product marketing conceptualised by Pine II and Gilmore (1998) – customer participation and customer connection – by extending the study of the dimensions to the online context. In online marketing, the business aim is to hold attention, have visitors more deeply penetrate a Website, purchase, and return to the site, among other objectives. The paper analyses and synthesises findings from a three-part study of Internet use, the WebQUAL Audit, and presents the proposition that the dimensions suggested by Pine II and Gilmore as attractors to many experiential offerings in the physical world, may not be applicable in the online environment populated by commercial Websites. The paper also suggests a future research agenda to reconcile the requirements of users and the perspective of Web designers and other contributors to commercial Websites as discussed in the literature review presented.<br /
Atmospheric Circulation of Terrestrial Exoplanets
The investigation of planets around other stars began with the study of gas
giants, but is now extending to the discovery and characterization of
super-Earths and terrestrial planets. Motivated by this observational tide, we
survey the basic dynamical principles governing the atmospheric circulation of
terrestrial exoplanets, and discuss the interaction of their circulation with
the hydrological cycle and global-scale climate feedbacks. Terrestrial
exoplanets occupy a wide range of physical and dynamical conditions, only a
small fraction of which have yet been explored in detail. Our approach is to
lay out the fundamental dynamical principles governing the atmospheric
circulation on terrestrial planets--broadly defined--and show how they can
provide a foundation for understanding the atmospheric behavior of these
worlds. We first survey basic atmospheric dynamics, including the role of
geostrophy, baroclinic instabilities, and jets in the strongly rotating regime
(the "extratropics") and the role of the Hadley circulation, wave adjustment of
the thermal structure, and the tendency toward equatorial superrotation in the
slowly rotating regime (the "tropics"). We then survey key elements of the
hydrological cycle, including the factors that control precipitation, humidity,
and cloudiness. Next, we summarize key mechanisms by which the circulation
affects the global-mean climate, and hence planetary habitability. In
particular, we discuss the runaway greenhouse, transitions to snowball states,
atmospheric collapse, and the links between atmospheric circulation and CO2
weathering rates. We finish by summarizing the key questions and challenges for

Small business perceptions of postal and online survey research
Concerns over the overall cost of marketing research and the cost per usable response have in large measure caused marketing practitioners to turn to online marketing research techniques, either as a solus technique, or in a mixed mode application. However, the use of e-mail and mixed mode surveys such as postal invitations to complete online questionnaires present both familiar and new issues, as the extant literature illustrates. This paper examines an earlier study before reporting findings from the present study, which employs a method that ascertains the probability of commissioning four survey research methods, described in scenarios and delivered using e-mail and the World Wide Web (Web). It is evident that while perceptions of e-mail, the Internet, and privacy have changed since early use of the Internet and more particularly the World Wide Web, and there is acknowledgement in the literature concerning the lower costs and faster response speeds of online marketing research, small businesses do appear to discriminate in favour of targeted online survey methods over postal surveys, portrayed as scenarios in this study, but that this perception does not apply to all hybrid survey modes.<br /
Absolutism, relativism and metaepistemology
This paper is about two topics: metaepistemological absolutism and the epistemic principles governing perceptual warrant. Our aim is to highlight—by taking the debate between dogmatists and conservativists about perceptual warrant as a case study—a surprising and hitherto unnoticed problem with metaepistemological absolutism, at least as it has been influentially defended by Paul Boghossian (Fear of knowledge: against relativism and constructivism, Oxford University Press, Oxford, 2006a) as the principal metaepistemological contrast point to relativism. What we find is that the metaepistemological commitments at play on both sides of this dogmatism/conservativism debate do not line up with epistemic relativism nor do they line up with absolutism, at least as Boghossian articulates this position. What this case study reveals is the need in metaepistemological option space for the recognition of a weaker and less tendentious form of absolutism, what we call “environment relativism”. On this view, epistemic principles are knowable, objective, and they can serve as the basis of particular epistemic evaluations, but their validity is relative to the wider global environment in which they are applied
