An economic model of Tennessee\u27s lumber and wood products industry

The purpose of this study was to provide a better understanding of the contribution of the Tennessee lumber and wood products industry to the state economy. The approach taken was to develop equations that quantified historical relationships relevant to the lumber and wood products industry. This methodology provided a separate sector, consistent with the state econometric model for the lumber and wood products industry. The Tennessee Econometric Model (TEM II) provided the basic framework within which the lumber and wood products equations were formulated. The framework for the manufacturing sector equations in TEM II consists of separate equations for forecasting output, employment, and wages. This basic structure was used in formulating the Tennessee lumber and wood products equations. The constraints associated with working within the TEM II framework were considered significant in this study. In order to better identify structural relationships in the industry, an alternative set of output equations was developed for structural/simulation analysis. These equations were formulated using a different set of statistical and economic criteria than the forecasting equations. The equations resulting from the study provide valuable information about the performance of the lumber and wood products industry in the state economy. The forecasting equations, in their current form, provide forecasts for the industry in terms of output, employment, and wages for the 1979-1986 time period. The final form of the simulation equation provides a statistically valid method of impact analysis. Specifically, the impact of changes in the furniture and housing markets on the state lumber industry can be tentatively identified. Though the equations may not be incorporated into the state econometric model in their current form, the research accomplished in their formulation is valuable as a basis for further study of the industry. Additional research is needed to determine if the hardwood industry can be analyzed adequately as a separate sector of the state econometric model and/or by developing a more detailed satellite model

Reliability and Validity of a Flume-Based Maximal Oxygen Uptake Swimming Test

    A mode-specific swimming protocol to assess maximal aerobic uptake (VO2maxsw) is vital to accurately evaluate swimming performance. A need exists for reliable and valid swimming protocols that assess VO2maxsw in a flume environment. The purpose was to assess: (a) reliability and (b) “performance” validity of a VO2maxsw flume protocol using the 457-m freestyle pool performance swim (PS) test as the criterion. Nineteen males (n = 9) and females (n = 10) (age, 28.5 ± 8.3 years.; height, 174.7 ± 8.2 cm; mass, 72.9 ± 12.5 kg; %body fat, 21.4 ± 5.9) performed two flume VO2maxsw tests (VO2maxswA and VO2maxswB) and one PS test [457 m (469.4 ± 94.7 s)]. For test–retest reliability (Trials A vs. B), moderately strong relationships were established for VO2maxsw (mL·kg−1·min−1)(r= 0.628, p = 0.002), O2pulse (mL O2·beat−1)(r = 0.502, p = 0.014), VEmax (L·min−1) (r = 0.671, p = 0.001), final test time (sec) (0.608, p = 0.004), and immediate post-test blood lactate (IPE (BLa)) (0.716, p = 0.001). For performance validity, moderately strong relationships (p \u3c 0.05) were found between VO2maxswA (r =−0.648, p = 0.005), O2pulse (r= −0.623, p = 0.008), VEmax (r = −0.509 p = 0.037), and 457-m swim times. The swimming flume protocol examined is a reliable and valid assessment of VO2maxsw., and offers an alternative for military, open water, or those seeking complementary forms of training to improve swimming performance

FORTE satellite constraints on ultra-high energy cosmic particle fluxes

The FORTE (Fast On-orbit Recording of Transient Events) satellite records bursts of electromagnetic waves arising from near the Earth's surface in the radio frequency (RF) range of 30 to 300 MHz with a dual polarization antenna. We investigate the possible RF signature of ultra-high energy cosmic-ray particles in the form of coherent Cherenkov radiation from cascades in ice. We calculate the sensitivity of the FORTE satellite to ultra-high energy (UHE) neutrino fluxes at different energies beyond the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin (GZK) cutoff. Some constraints on supersymmetry model parameters are also estimated due to the limits that FORTE sets on the UHE neutralino flux. The FORTE database consists of over 4 million recorded events to date, including in principle some events associated with UHE neutrinos. We search for candidate FORTE events in the period from September 1997 to December 1999. The candidate production mechanism is via coherent VHF radiation from a UHE neutrino shower in the Greenland ice sheet. We demonstrate a high efficiency for selection against lightning and anthropogenic backgrounds. A single candidate out of several thousand raw triggers survives all cuts, and we set limits on the corresponding particle fluxes assuming this event represents our background level.Comment: added a table, updated references and Figure 8, this version is submitted to Phys. The serious games ecosystem: Interdisciplinary and intercontextual praxis

    Get PDF
This chapter will situate academia in relation to serious games commercial production and contextual adoption, and vice-versa. As a researcher it is critical to recognize that academic research of serious games does not occur in a vaccum. Direct partnerships between universities and commercial organizations are increasingly common, as well as between research institutes and the contexts that their serious games are deployed in. Commercial production of serious games and their increased adoption in non-commercial contexts will influence academic research through emerging impact pathways and funding opportunities. Adding further complexity is the emergence of commercial organizations that undertake their own research, and research institutes that have inhouse commercial arms. To conclude, we explore how these issues affect the individual researcher, and offer considerations for future academic and industry serious games projects
