Solitonic supersymmetry restoration
Q-balls are a possible feature of any model with a conserved, global U(1)
symmetry and no massless, charged scalars. It is shown that for a broad class
of models of metastable supersymmetry breaking they are extremely influential
on the vacuum lifetime and make seemingly viable vacua catastrophically short
lived. A net charge asymmetry is not required as there is often a significant
range of parameter space where statistical fluctuations alone are sufficient.
This effect is examined for two supersymmetry breaking scenarios. It is found
that models of minimal gauge mediation (which necessarily have a messenger
number U(1)) undergo a rapid, supersymmetry restoring phase transition unless
the messenger mass is greater than 10^8 GeV. Similarly the ISS model, in the
context of direct mediation, quickly decays unless the perturbative
superpotential coupling is greater than the Standard Model gauge couplings.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures, minor comments added, accepted for publication

Risk Factors for Anaemia Among HIV Infected Children Attending Care and Treatment Clinic at Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
There is paucity of data describing the risk factors for anaemia among HIV infected children in Tanzania. This cross sectional study was carried out to determine the contributing factors for anaemia among HIV-infected children attending Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam. Both univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to identify possible factors associated with anaemia in HIV-infected children. A total of 75 (44%) patients among 167 recruited HIV-infected children aged 6 months to 59 months of were found to be anaemic (Hg<11g/dl). Multivariate logistic regression demonstrated that not being on HAART (OR 3.40, 95%CI (1.20-9.60), having CD4% <25% (OR 2.30, 95%CI (1.20-34.60), having a history of tuberculosis (TB) (OR 3.23, 95%CI (1.10-9.70) and having hookworm infestation (OR 5.97, 95%CI (1.92-18.4) were independent risk factors for anaemia among HIV infected children. The analyses also showed that being HIV positive for ≥ 2.5 years resulted into a low risk of severe anaemia compared to being HIV positive for < 2.5 years. Taking multivitamins (OR 0.07, 95%, CI (0.020-0.30) and antihelminthics (OR 0.27, 95%CI (0.10-0.74) were also protective against anaemia in children. Similar factors (with exception of using antihelmintics) were associated with severe anaemia. In conclusion the factors associated with anaemia in HIV infected children were multifactorial in nature. Efforts to correct anaemia in HIV infected children should include use of HAART and treatment of infections such as TB and hookworms
Resonant Excitation of Shear Alfv\'en Perturbations by Trapped Energetic Ions in a Tokamak
A new analytic expression is derived for the resonant drive of high n
Alfvenic modes by particles accelerated to high energy by Ion Cyclotron
Resonance Heating. This derivation includes finite orbit effects, and the
formalism is completely non-perturbative. The high-n limit is used to calculate
the complex particle response integrals along the orbits explicitly. This new
theory is applied to downward sweeping Alfven Cascade quasimodes completing the
theory of these modes, and making testable predictions. These predictions are
found to be consistent with experiments carried out on the Joint European Torus
[P. H. Rebut and B. E. Keen, Fusion Technol. 11, 13 (1987)].Comment: 31 pages, 6 figure
Changing internal migration flows patterns in South Korea
In comparison with other developed nations, there is a relative lack of analyses on internal migration flow in South Korea. During the last 50 years, the country has witnessed distinct changes in both the levels and patterns of internal migration. Traditionally, the faster developing north-west administrative units (Seoul, Incheon and Gyeonggi regions) have accounted for the majority of in-migration. However, since 2011, internal migration in Korea has become more diffuse, with migrants moving to a greater variety of regions. We visualize these changes using chord diagram plots
The H II Region/PDR Connection: Self-Consistent Calculations of Physical Conditions in Star-Forming Regions
We have performed a series of calculations designed to reproduce infrared
diagnostics used to determine physical conditions in star forming regions. We
self-consistently calculate the thermal and chemical structure of an H II
region and photodissociation region (PDR) that are in pressure equilibrium.
This differs from previous work, which used separate calculations for each gas
phase. Our calculations span a wide range of stellar temperatures, gas
densities, and ionization parameters. We describe improvements made to the
spectral synthesis code Cloudy that made these calculations possible. These
include the addition of a molecular network with ~1000 reactions involving 68
molecular species and improved treatment of the grain physics. Data from the
Spitzer First Look Survey, along with other archives, are used to derive
important physical characteristics of the H II region and PDR. These include
stellar temperatures, electron densities, ionization parameters, UV radiation
flux, and PDR density. Finally, we calculate the contribution of the H II
region to PDR emission line diagnostics, which allows for a more accurate
determination of physical conditions in the PDR.Comment: 60 pages, 35 figures, to be published in the Astrophysical Journal.

Cosmic Reionisation by Stellar Sources: Population II Stars
We study the reionisation of the Universe by stellar sources using a
numerical approach that combines fast 3D radiative transfer calculations with
high resolution hydrodynamical simulations. Ionising fluxes for the sources are
derived from intrinsic star formation rates computed in the underlying
hydrodynamical simulations. Our mass resolution limit for sources is M~ 4.0 x
10^7 h^-1 M_sol, which is roughly an order of magnitude smaller than in
previous studies of this kind. Our calculations reveal that the reionisation
process is sensitive to the inclusion of dim sources with masses below ~10^9
h^-1 M_sol. We present the results of our reionisation simulation assuming a
range of escape fractions for ionising photons and make statistical comparisons
with observational constraints on the neutral fraction of hydrogen at z~6
derived from the z=6.28 SDSS quasar of Becker and coworkers. Our best fitting
model has an escape fraction of ~20% and causes reionisation to occur by z~8,
although the IGM remains fairly opaque until z~6. In order to simultaneously
match the observations from the z=6.28 SDSS quasar and the optical depth
measurement from WMAP with the sources modeled here, we require an evolving
escape fraction that rises from f_esc=0.20 near z~6 to f_esc>~10 at z~18.Comment: 42 pages, 13 figure
