A survey was conducted in Muğla Region to find out, on one hand, whether there are differences between tourists' evaluations of hospitalities' performances and employees self-evaluations, and on the other hand whether evaluations of tourists from various countries differ. Tourists' and service providers' evaluations in six constructed areas differed significantly only in two areas: "attitudes" and "behaviors and skillfulness". Tourists' evaluations in the mentioned areas are significantly higher than those of employees. When it comes to the second issue, the study shows that there are some significant differences between Russian tourists' evaluations and Western nationalities' evaluations, those of British, Germans, Dutch, and Scottish. Also, Belgians' evaluations were set apart from those of the mentioned nationalities in "attitude of employees"

: Architectural education is based on acquiring theoretical and applied knowledge.  As a result, experiential learning theory was frequently applied to architecture design courses.  As experiential learning refers to gaining knowledge by doing, it allows the students to experience implementing the theoretical knowledge and refine their design solutions by communicating with the teachers.  The present study aims to integrate experimental learning in a theoretical course named "Building Information" on housing designs for first-year undergraduate architecture students.  After eight weeks of the theoretical lecture period, the students were assigned to design a house using one of the specific approaches, namely accessibility, climate responsiveness, or flexibility.  The occupants of the houses were defined, and the students determined their spatial needs.  After the critique sessions, the house designs were presented with drawings and analogue models as the final product.  Three selected examples from each design approach were evaluated in the study.  The results showed that the students gained and implemented theoretical knowledge more efficiently with the integration of experimental learning

A Rare Case of Sickle Cell Anemia Crisis Triggered by Plasmodium Falciparum Malaria

    Get PDF
Malaria is a common public health problem in Sub-Saharan African countries such as Niger and one child dies every two minutes due to this disease. Although the defense mechanism is not clear, sickle cells are 90% protective especially for Plasmodium falciparum malaria. In Niger, malaria is among the first to be considered in patients admitted to the emergency departments (EDs) with high fever. It is important for physicians to resolve the clinical manifestation in a patient who admits due to acute abdominal pain and high fever in a hospital with limited facilities. Failure to provide information about the patient’s history and admission to the ED alone led to a delay of diagnosis and treatment of this rare coexistence

Morus alba L. Moraceae leaves are used effectively to treat fever, protect liver from damage, strengthen the joints, facilitate discharge of urine in Turkey folk medicine. In this study we aimed to determine in vitro antioxidant and antimicrobial activity with GC/MS analysis of the Morus alba L. leaves. Dried plant leaves samples are milled and extracted with distilled water and ethanol in Soxhlet machine. After extraction, extract samples were concentrated in rotary evaporator machine. Total antioxidant status values were determined as mmol Trolox Equivalent/L spectrophotometrically by using Erel’s method. Sterile extracts were used to avoid contamination in antimicrobial activity test. As test microorganisms Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 , Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 , Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212 , Pseudomonas aeroginosa ATCC 27853 , Candida albicans ATCC 90028 were used. Antimicrobial activity was determined with disc diffusion method. We used ethanol extracts of samples in GC/MS analysis. Ethanol and distilled water extracts showed antioxidant activity in different rate. Besides, ethanol extracts have an antimicrobial activity but water extracts have not antimicrobial activity on our test microorganisms. We determined four compounds 9,12,15-octadecatrienoic acid, ethyl ester, linolenic acid ethyl ester, gibberellic acid with GC/MS analysis in ethanol extract

Fragmented QRS complexes are associated with left ventricular systolic and diastolic dysfunctions in patients with metabolic syndrome

Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is found to be associated with deterioration of the left ventricular (LV) systolic and diastolic functions. One of the factors for this impairment is myocardial fibrosis. Fragmented QRS (fQRS) complexes are found to be associated with myocardial fibrosis. The aim of the study was to evaluate if the presence of fQRS on electrocardiogram (ECG) can detect pronounced impairment in the LV systolic and diastolic functions in MetS patients. Methods: The study included 111 (mean age 47 ± 9, 49.5% male) MetS patients and 96 (mean age 45 ± 9, 58.3% male) control subjects without MetS. ECG was evaluated for the presence of fQRS. Each patient underwent conventional echocardiography and tissue Doppler imaging. Results: Fragmented QRS was more common among MetS patients (26.1% vs. 14.6%, p = 0.041). MetS was associated with subclinical LV systolic and LV diastolic dysfunctions. In subgroup analyses of MetS patients, the presence of fQRS on ECG had a higher E/E’ ratio and lower E’ velocity, indicating pronounced diastolic dysfunction, as well as lower isovolumic acceleration (IVA), indicating profound subclinical LV systolic dysfunction. E/E’ ratio and IVA were independent predictors of fQRS presence in patients with MetS. Conclusions: Fragmented QRS is more common among MetS patients compared to non-MetS patients. The presence of fQRS is associated with pronounced subclinical LV systolic and diastolic dysfunctions in MetS patients

A textile platform using mechanically reinforced hydrogel fibres towards engineering tendon niche

INTRODUCTION: Tendon injuries can result from tendon overuse or trauma, resulting in substantial pain and disability. Given that natural or surgical repair of tendons lead to a poor outcome in terms of mechanical properties and functionality, there is a great need for tissue engineering strategies. Textile platforms enable the generation of biomimetic constructs [1]. Therefore, the main goal of this study is the development of cell-laden hybrid hydrogel fibers reinforced with a mechanically robust core fiber and their assembly into braided constructs towards replicating tendon mechanical properties and architecture. METHODS: To fabricate mechanically reinforced hydrogel fibres, a commercially available suture was coated using a cell-hydrogel mixture of methacryloyl gelatine (GelMA) and alginate. Composite fibres (CFs) were obtained by ionic crosslinking of alginate followed by photocrosslinking of GelMA. CFs were assembled using braiding technique and the mechanical properties of single fibres and braided constructs were evaluated. Different cells were encapsulated in the hydrogel layer, including MC-3T3, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and human tendon-derived cells (TDCs). Cell viability and metabolic activity were evaluated by LIVE/DEAD staining and presto blue assay of metabolic activity. The expression of tendon-related markers and matrix deposition were also investigated. RESULTS: CFs were fabricated with a GelMA:alginate hydrogel layer and using multifilament twisted cotton or biodegradable suturing threads. The biocompatibility of this system was evaluated on encapsulated cells (Fig.1a). Cells (MC-3T3, MSCs and TDCs) were homogeneously distributed along the hydrogel layer, being viable up to 14 days in culture. In addition, TDCs were spreading inside the hydrogel after less than 48 h. Moreover, to further improve the mechanical properties of CFs, braided constructs were generated (Fig. 1b). Braiding CFs together enhanced their tensile strength and the process did not affect the viability of encapsulated cells.DISCUSSION & CONCLUSIONS: CFs were generated with a load bearing core and a hydrogel layer towards mimicking both mechanical properties and the matrix-rich microenvironment of tendon tissue. Accordingly, cell behaviour can be further modulated by modifying the hydrogel composition or, ultimately, through the addition of bioactive cues. Finally, braiding CFs together allows tuning the mechanical properties of developed constructs to match those of native tendon tissues.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia in the framework of FCT-POPH-FSE, the PhD grant SFRH/BD/96593/2013 of R.C-

Quality and efficiency of techniques to be used for separation and purification lipase enzymes are commercially important enzyme. Among such techniques, adsorption methods are highly preferred. Cryogels have been quite extensively used as the adsorbents due to their macropores and interconnected flow channels. In this study, adsorption of lipase enzyme onto copper nanoparticles embedded poly 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-N-methacryloyl-L-tryptophan , poly HEMA-MATrp cryogels was studies for conditions with varying pH, interaction time, lipase enzyme initial concentration, temperature and ionic strength. Maximum lipase enzyme adsorption capacity of cryogels was determined as 183.6 mg/g. Fourier transform infrared spectrometer FTIR and scanning electron microscopy SEM were used for characterization of cryogels. At the end of the adsorption process, in order to be sure that the purity of lipase enzyme desorbed from cryogels, SDS-PAGE analyses were performed and molecular weight of the lipase enzyme was determined as 58 kDa. Adsorption characteristic of cryogels were determined according to the results of Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models. As a result of calculation run for adsorption isotherm models, Langmuir isotherm model was determined to be more appropriate
