    Sediment-moss interactions on a temperate glacier: Falljökull, Iceland

DOI: 10.3189/172756408784700734We present the results of preliminary investigations of globular moss growth on the surface of Falljökull, a temperate outlet glacier of the Vatnajökull ice cap, southern Iceland. Supraglacial debris has provided a basis for moss colonization, and several large (>500 m2) patches of moss growth (Racomitrium spp.) are observed on the surface of the glacier. Each area of moss-colonized supraglacial debris shows a downslope increase in sphericity and moss cushion size and a decrease in percentage surface coverage of moss-colonized and bare clasts. It is suggested that moss growth on supraglacial debris allows preferential downslope movement of clasts through an associated increase in both overall mass and sphericity. Thermal insulation by moss cushions protects the underlying ice surface from melt, and the resulting ice pedestals assist in downslope sliding and toppling of moss cushions. The morphology and life cycle of supraglacial globular mosses is therefore not only closely linked to the presence and distribution of supraglacial debris, but also appears to assist in limited down-glacier transport of this debris. This research highlights both the dynamic nature of the interaction of mosses with supraglacial sedimentary systems and the need for a detailed consideration of their role within the wider glacial ecosystem.Peer reviewe

    Day-to-Day Test–Retest Variability of CBF, CMRO2, and OEF Measurements Using Dynamic 15O PET Studies

    Contains fulltext : 169592.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access)PURPOSE: We assessed test-retest variability of cerebral blood flow (CBF), cerebral blood volume (CBV), cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen (CMRO(2)), and oxygen extraction fraction (OEF) measurements derived from dynamic (15)O positron emission tomography (PET) scans. PROCEDURES: In seven healthy volunteers, complete test-retest (15)O PET studies were obtained; test-retest variability and left-to-right ratios of CBF, CBV, OEF, and CMRO(2) in arterial flow territories were calculated. RESULTS: Whole-brain test-retest coefficients of variation for CBF, CBV, CMRO(2), and OEF were 8.8%, 13.8%, 5.3%, and 9.3%, respectively. Test-retest variability of CBV left-to-right ratios was <7.4% across all territories. Corresponding values for CBF, CMRO(2), and OEF were better, i.e., <4.5%, <4.0%, and <1.4%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The test-retest variability of CMRO(2) measurements derived from dynamic (15)O PET scans is comparable to within-session test-retest variability derived from steady-state (15)O PET scans. Excellent regional test-retest variability was observed for CBF, CMRO(2), and OEF. Variability of absolute CBF and OEF measurements is probably affected by physiological day-to-day variability of CBF

    The P2X(7) receptor tracer [C-11]SMW139 as an in vivo marker of neuroinflammation in multiple sclerosis: a first-in man study

    Purpose: The novel PET tracer [11C]SMW139 binds with high affinity to the P2X7 receptor, which is expressed on pro-inflammatory microglia. The purposes of this first in-man study were to characterise pharmacokinetics of [11C]SMW139 in patients with active relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) and healthy controls (HC) and to evaluate its potential to identify in vivo neuroinflammation in RRMS. / Methods: Five RRMS patients and 5 age-matched HC underwent 90-min dynamic [11C]SMW139 PET scans, with online continuous and manual arterial sampling to generate a metabolite-corrected arterial plasma input function. Tissue time activity curves were fitted to single- and two-tissue compartment models, and the model that provided the best fits was determined using the Akaike information criterion. / Results: The optimal model for describing [11C]SMW139 kinetics in both RRMS and HC was a reversible two-tissue compartment model with blood volume parameter and with the dissociation rate k4 fixed to the whole-brain value. Exploratory group level comparisons demonstrated an increased volume of distribution (VT) and binding potential (BPND) in RRMS compared with HC in normal appearing brain regions. BPND in MS lesions was decreased compared with non-lesional white matter, and a further decrease was observed in gadolinium-enhancing lesions. In contrast, increased VT was observed in enhancing lesions, possibly resulting from disruption of the blood-brain barrier in active MS lesions. In addition, there was a high correlation between parameters obtained from 60- to 90-min datasets, although analyses using 60-min data led to a slight underestimation in regional VT and BPND values. / Conclusions: This first in-man study demonstrated that uptake of [11C]SMW139 can be quantified with PET using BPND as a measure for specific binding in healthy controls and RRMS patients. Additional studies are warranted for further clinical evaluation of this novel neuroinflammation tracer

    Assessment of the appropriate use criteria for amyloid PET in an unselected memory clinic cohort: The ABIDE project

    Introduction The objective of this study was to assess the usefulness of the appropriate use criteria (AUC) for amyloid imaging in an unselected cohort. Methods We calculated sensitivity and specificity of appropriate use (increased confidence and management change), as defined by Amyloid Imaging Taskforce in the AUC, and other clinical utility outcomes. Furthermore, we compared differences in post–positron emission tomography diagnosis and management change between “AUC-consistent” and “AUC-inconsistent” patients. Results Almost half (250/507) of patients were AUC-consistent. In both AUC-consistent and AUC-inconsistent patients, post–positron emission tomography diagnosis (28%–21%) and management (32%–17%) change was substantial. The Amyloid Imaging Taskforce's definition of appropriate use occurred in 55/507 (13%) patients, detected by the AUC with a sensitivity of 93%, and a specificity of 56%. Diagnostic changes occurred independently of AUC status (sensitivity: 57%, specificity: 53%).
