Synchronization in Complex Systems Following the Decision Based Queuing Process: The Rhythmic Applause as a Test Case
Living communities can be considered as complex systems, thus a fertile
ground for studies related to their statistics and dynamics. In this study we
revisit the case of the rhythmic applause by utilizing the model proposed by
V\'azquez et al. [A. V\'azquez et al., Phys. Rev. E 73, 036127 (2006)]
augmented with two contradicted {\it driving forces}, namely: {\it
Individuality} and {\it Companionship}. To that extend, after performing
computer simulations with a large number of oscillators we propose an
explanation on the following open questions (a) why synchronization occurs
suddenly, and b) why synchronization is observed when the clapping period
() is ( is the mean self period
of the spectators) and is lost after a time. Moreover, based on the model, a
weak preferential attachment principle is proposed which can produce complex
networks obeying power law in the distribution of number edges per node with

A New Global Ocean Climatology
A new global ocean temperature and salinity climatology is proposed for two time periods: a long time mean using multiple sensor data for the 1900–2017 period and a shorter time mean using only profiling float data for the 2003–2017 period. We use the historical database of World Ocean Database 2018. The estimation approach is novel as an additional quality control procedure is implemented, along with a new mapping algorithm based on Data Interpolating Variational Analysis. The new procedure, in addition to the traditional quality control approach, resulted in low sensitivity in terms of the first guess field choice. The roughness index and the root mean square of residuals are new indices applied to the selection of the free mapping parameters along with sensitivity experiments. Overall, the new estimates were consistent with previous climatologies, but several differences were found. The cause of these discrepancies is difficult to identify due to several differences in the procedures. To minimise these uncertainties, a multi-model ensemble mean is proposed as the least uncertain estimate of the global ocean temperature and salinity climatology
A point process framework for modeling electrical stimulation of the auditory nerve
Model-based studies of auditory nerve responses to electrical stimulation can
provide insight into the functioning of cochlear implants. Ideally, these
studies can identify limitations in sound processing strategies and lead to
improved methods for providing sound information to cochlear implant users. To
accomplish this, models must accurately describe auditory nerve spiking while
avoiding excessive complexity that would preclude large-scale simulations of
populations of auditory nerve fibers and obscure insight into the mechanisms
that influence neural encoding of sound information. In this spirit, we develop
a point process model of the auditory nerve that provides a compact and
accurate description of neural responses to electric stimulation. Inspired by
the framework of generalized linear models, the proposed model consists of a
cascade of linear and nonlinear stages. We show how each of these stages can be
associated with biophysical mechanisms and related to models of neuronal
dynamics. Moreover, we derive a semi-analytical procedure that uniquely
determines each parameter in the model on the basis of fundamental statistics
from recordings of single fiber responses to electric stimulation, including
threshold, relative spread, jitter, and chronaxie. The model also accounts for
refractory and summation effects that influence the responses of auditory nerve
fibers to high pulse rate stimulation. Throughout, we compare model predictions
to published physiological data and explain differences in auditory nerve
responses to high and low pulse rate stimulation. We close by performing an
ideal observer analysis of simulated spike trains in response to sinusoidally
amplitude modulated stimuli and find that carrier pulse rate does not affect

Transformation Equivariant Boltzmann Machines
Abstract. We develop a novel modeling framework for Boltzmann machines, augmenting each hidden unit with a latent transformation assignment variable which describes the selection of the transformed view of the canonical connection weights associated with the unit. This enables the inferences of the model to transform in response to transformed input data in a stable and predictable way, and avoids learning multiple features differing only with respect to the set of transformations. Extending prior work on translation equivariant (convolutional) models, we develop translation and rotation equivariant restricted Boltzmann machines (RBMs) and deep belief nets (DBNs), and demonstrate their effectiveness in learning frequently occurring statistical structure from artificial and natural images
Perioperative outcome, long-term mortality and time trends in elderly patients undergoing low-, intermediate- or major non-cardiac surgery
Background: Decision-making whether older patients benefit from surgery can be a difficult task. This report investigates characteristics and outcomes of a large cohort of inpatients, aged 80 years and over, undergoing non-cardiac surgery. Methods: This observational study was performed at a tertiary university medical centre in the Netherlands. Patients of 80 years or older undergoing elective or urgent surgery from January 2004 to June 2017 were included. Outcomes were length of stay, discharge destination, 30-day and long-term mortality. Patients were divided into low-, intermediate and high-risk surgery subgroups. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression were used to evaluate the association of risk factors and outcomes. Secondary outcomes were time trends, assessed with Mantel–Haenszel chi-square test. Results: Data of 8251 patients, undergoing 19,027 surgical interventions were collected from the patients’ medical record. 7032 primary procedures were suitable for analyses. Median LOS was 3 days in the low-risk group, compared to six in the intermediate- and ten in the high-risk group. Median LOS of the total cohort decreased from 5.8 days (IQR 1.9–14.5) in 2004–2007 to 4.6 days (IQR 1.9–9.0) in 2016–2017. Three quarters of patients were discharged to their home. Postoperative 30-day mortality in the low-risk group was 2.3%. In the overall population 30-day mortality was high and constant during the study period (6.7%, ranging from 4.2 to 8.4%). Conclusion:Patients should not be withheld surgery solely based on their age. However, even for low-risk surgery, the mortality rate of more than 2% is substantial. Deciding whether older patients benefit from surgery should be based on the understanding of individual risks, patients’ wishes and a patient-centred plan.</p
The third dose of mRNA SARS-CoV-2 vaccines enhances the spike-specific antibody and memory B cell response in myelofibrosis patients
Vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 using mRNA-based vaccines has been highly recommended for fragile subjects, including myelofibrosis patients (MF). Available data on the immune responsiveness of MF patients to mRNA SARS-CoV-2 vaccination, and the impact of the therapy with the JAK inhibitor ruxolitinib, are still fragmented. Here, we profile the spike-specific IgG and memory B-cell response in MF patients, treated or not with ruxolitinib, after the second and the third dose of SARS-CoV-2 BNT162b2 (BioNTech) and mRNA-1273 (Moderna) vaccines. Plasma and peripheral blood mononuclear cells samples were collected before vaccination, post the second and the third doses and tested for spike-specific antibodies, ACE2/RBD antibody inhibition binding activity and spike-specific B cells. The third vaccine dose significantly increased the spike-specific IgG titers in both ruxolitinib-treated and untreated patients, and strongly enhanced the percentage of subjects with antibodies capable of in vitro blocking ACE2/RBD interaction, from 50% up to 80%. While a very low frequency of spike-specific B cells was measured in blood 7 days after the second vaccination dose, a strong and significant increase was elicited by the third dose administration, generating a B cell response similar to the one detected in healthy controls. Despite the overall positive impact of the third dose in MF patients, two patients that were under active concomitant immunosuppressive treatment at the time of vaccination, and a patient that received lymphodepleting therapies in the past, remained low responders. The third mRNA vaccine dose strongly increases the SARS-CoV-2 specific humoral and B cell responses in MF patients, promoting a reactivation of the immune response similar to the one observed in healthy controls
Mediterranean Sea large-scale low-frequency ocean variability and water mass formation rates from 1987 to 2007: A retrospective analysis
We describe a synthesis of the Mediterranean Sea circulation structure and dynamics from a 23-year- long reanalysis of the ocean circulation carried out by Adani et al. (2011). This mesoscale permitting dynamical reconstruction of past ocean variability in the Mediterranean Sea allows the study of the time-mean circulation and its low frequency, decadal, components. It is found that the time-mean circu- lation is composed of boundary and open ocean intensified jets at the border of cyclonic and anticyclonic gyres. The large scale basin circulation is generally characterized in the northern regions by cyclonic gyres and in its southern parts by anticyclonic gyres and eddy-dominated flow fields, with the exception of the Tyrrhenian and the northern Ionian Sea. The time-mean Tyrrhenian Sea circulation is dominated by cyclonic gyres of different intensity and intermittency. The northern Ionian Sea circulation, however, reverses in sign in two ten-year periods, the first in 1987–1996 and the second in 1997–2006, which is here called the Northern Ionian reversal phenomenon. This reversal is provoked by the excursion of the Atlantic-Ionian Stream from the middle to the northern parts of the basin. The decadal variability of other parts of the basin is characterized by changes in strength of the basin scale structures. The water mass formation rates and variability are dominated by event-like periods where the intermediate and deep waters are formed for 2–3 years at higher rates. The largest deep water formation events of the past 23 years occurred separately in the western and eastern Mediterranean basin: the first coincided with the Eastern Mediterranean Transient (Roether et al., 1996) and the second with the western Mediterranean deep water formation event in 2005–2006 (Smith et al., 2008). SN 2003lw and GRB 031203: A Bright Supernova for a Faint Gamma-ray Burst
Optical and near-infrared observations of the gamma-ray burst GRB 031203, at
z = 0.1055, are reported. A very faint afterglow is detected superimposed to
the host galaxy in our first infrared JHK observations, carried out ~9 hours
after the burst. Subsequently, a rebrightening is detected in all bands,
peaking in the R band about 18 rest-frame days after the burst. The
rebrightening closely resembles the light curve of a supernova like SN 1998bw,
assuming that the GRB and the SN went off almost simultaneously, but with a
somewhat slower evolution. Spectra taken close to the maximum of the
rebrightening show extremely broad features as in SN 1998bw. The determination
of the absolute magnitude of this SN (SN 2003lw) is difficult owing to the
large and uncertain extinction, but likely this event was brighter than SN
1998bw by 0.5 mag in the VRI bands, reaching an absolute magnitude M_V =
