Anıtkabir is the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the commander of Turkish War of Independence and the founder of Republic of Turkey. Rather than a work of architecture, Anıtkabir has been a symbol and a focal center of Atatürk’s principles, republican revolutions and modern Turkey

MAKING A SMALL TOWN LIVABLE:: PROMOTING SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH A NEW URBANIST APPROACH IN MEBANE, NORTH CAROLINA

A contemporary nexus of urban development discussions is the concept of sustainability, which is often presented as a viable remedy to many of the contemporary urban ills, i.e., diminished livability that is mostly blamed on suburban sprawl. Not only large metropolitan areas experience sprawl. Numerous relatively small towns have also been undergoing this kind of spatial transformation as their cores are emptied in favor of suburbs. Town of Mebane, North Carolina, is one such small town. Today, downtown Mebane is home to manufacturing plants, retail stores, institutional buildings, and residences as well as empty lots and boarded-up buildings. Its architectural scale is still charming and its gridiron network of streets is capable of accommodating various modes of traffic although precedence is given to the car. Furthermore, some of the downtown buildings are worthy of consideration as historic landmarks, although many have been clad with metal panels, disguising their authenticity. This paper is a progress report on the first of three phases of an urban design actionresearch project on downtown Mebane, being undertaken by NC State University Architecture Faculty and Doctoral Students. The goal of the project is to generate sustainable urban development principles, guidelines and standards that promote urban livability. This phase involves an inventory of the town's physical, social, environmental and economical resources with New Urbanist "lenses" to develop specific sustainable urban development goals for the town's future and strategies to achieve these. In the subsequent phase of the project, proposals will be developed with citizens' input through citizens' charettes. It is envisioned that the process and the consequent proposal developed for Mebane is presented as a model to other small North Carolina towns that are striving to alleviate many of the ills of sprawl in the last phase of the project

Research Based Decision Making in Architectural Programming of Workplaces:: Case of Pamlico County Government Offices, North Carolina

Social, economical and technological developments in the recent decades, especially in the early days of the twenty-first century have consistently revealed the importance of knowledge as a base for decision-making processes. The ever-increasing dependence of productivity and competitiveness on knowledge in many fields has resulted in perception of knowledge as a commodity itself (Castells and Hall 1994). Consequently, the emphasis on knowledge generation has been identified by extensive research based applications in many fields and many societies. Within the field of architecture, knowledge generation and knowledge-based practices have started to be complementary to decision making and design processes especially in the last decades. The connotation of architecture with "art and design” has been accompanied by increased knowledge generation efforts, which has also brought architecture a connotation with "science”. The resultant forces have complemented the term "architecture as art” with another: "architecture as a knowledge-based tool” (Toker and Rifki 2001)

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of combined local corticosteroid and anaestethic therapy with home exercise programme in the treatment of painful shoulder conditions. Methods: 40 mg Depomedrol® (methylprednisolone acetate) + 120 mg Citanest® (procaine hydrochloride) were parenterally administered into the subacromial region of 28 patients (17 female, mean age: 48 years; 11 male, mean age: 52 years) from a group of patients who have been suffering from shoulder pain for a period of at least two months and had received no benefit from previous treatments. Simultaneously, they were placed on a home-based shoulder exercise programme. The patients were seen two months later and questioned about their conditions. The data were evaluated together with clinical findings based on the range of motion (ROM) of the shoulder. Results: Twenty of 28 patients (71.42%) reported complete relief from pain, 5 patients or 17.85% stated that they had only partial relief of pain, and 3 patients (10.71%) said that the level of pain remained essentially the same. Nineteen of 28 patients (67.85%) had good to excellent ROM while 3 (10.71%) still manifested poor ROM. Conclusion: Local corticosteroid plus local anaestethic therapy together with home exercise programme was found to be an economic, effective and safe short-term treatment in the management of painful shoulder conditions arising from certain disorders. A Comparative Analysis for Land Utilization:Steel and R/C Interlaced Structures

In architecture, interlace structural concept is considered as a new design approach for cosmopolitan cities with high density to minimize the land use and increase the interaction. With various architectural approach, land resources can be minimized by this interlace concept for residential complexes. Such buildings will eliminate the reduction of land resource problem and on the other side safety measures in structural design is incorporated by interlace concept of buildings. This new concept can be constructed steel or reinforced concrete. In this paper, an analytical approach has been presented for these buildings in architecture and structural design. In the research, design considerations were taken for interlaced structures with reinforced concrete and steel. Components of steel structure, isolated footing, and columns. This paper is presenting a step wise process for interlance structures. They are identification of project area, layout and model preparation, analysis and design of concrete interlaced structure, analysis and design of steel interlaced structure, drafting of the plans and costing and estimation of the structures. Comparison of both reinforced concrete and steel structures were carried out. The main aim of the paper is to provide a comparison between steel and concrete interlaced structure. A cost estimation was carried out to determine optimum design and construction for interlaced structures

To bind or not to bind: Lambda-Lambda hypernuclei and Xi hyperons

Four-body Faddeev-Yakubovsky calculations for Lambda-Lambda-p-n do not produce a bound state for Lambda-Lambda hydrogen 4, although suitably defined three-body Faddeev calculations for Lambda-Lambda-d produce a 1+ bound state for Lambda-Lambda interactions fitted to the Lambda-Lambda helium 6 emulsion event from KEK E373. This is opposite to the normal situation where a four-body Faddeev-Yakubovsky calculation yields stronger binding than that due to a suitably defined three-body Faddeev calculation. For stranger systems, Faddeev calculations using Lambda-Xi interactions which simulate the Nijmegen soft-core model NSC97 (which is close to reproducing the KEK event) suggest that Lambda-Xi helium 6 marks the onset of nuclear stability for Xi hyperons.Comment: Parallel-session invited talk at PANIC'02, to appear in NP
