Marine fish production and export marketing trend in Kerala - an economic analysis

    Get PDF
Though the marine fish production has considerably increased over the years .the economically backward traditional fishermen in the nonmechanised sector has been highly marginalized with enhanced mechanisation and motorisation of the fishing units. Inspite of the increase in fleet size and decrease in the catch rates, the mechanised and the motorised sectors still sustain mainly due to the increase in the price of almost all the varieties of fishes. The present study was carried out in Kerala coast during 1995-96, to assess the sectoral contribution of marine fish production, export trend of marine products and economics of prominent craft gear combinations. Production trend clearly indicates a declining catch of oil sardine and catfish in recent years and marked improvement in the production of penaeid prawns and cephalopods. More than 20% of the marine products exported from India are from Kerala and the forex earnings by the state during 1994-95 was Rs. 816.64 crores. The need for giving emphasis for product development and value added products has been stressed to improve our forex earnings. Almost all type of fishing units operating along Kerala coast are found to be economically viable

De novo transcriptome for Chiloscyllium griseum, a long-tail carpet shark of the Indian waters

Sharks have thrived in the oceans for 400 million years, experienced five extinctions and evolved into today’s apex predators. However, enormous genome size, poor karyotyping and limited tissue sampling options are the bottlenecks in shark research. Sharks of the family Orectolobiformes act as model species in transcriptome research with exceptionally high reproductive fecundity, catch prominence and oviparity. The present study illustrates a de novo transcriptome for an adult grey bamboo shark, Chiloscyllium griseum (Chondrichthyes; Hemiscyllidae) using paired-end RNA sequencing. Around 150 million short Illumina reads were obtained from five different tissues and assembled using the Trinity assembler. 70,647 hits on Uniprot by BLASTX was obtained after the transcriptome annotation. The data generated serve as a basis for transcriptome-based population genetic studies and open up new avenues in the field of comparative transcriptomics and conservation biology

Spontaneous off-stoichiometry as the knob to control dielectric properties of gapped metals

Using the first-principles calculations and La3Te4 as an example of an n-type gapped metal, we demonstrate that gapped metals can develop spontaneous defect formation resulting in off-stoichiometric compounds. Importantly, these compounds have different free carrier concentrations and can be realized by optimizing synthesis conditions. The ability to manipulate the free carrier concentration allows to tailor intraband and interband transitions, thus controlling the optoelectronic properties of materials in general. Specifically, by realizing different off-stochiometric La3-xTe4 compounds, it is possible to reach specific crossings of the real part of the dielectric function with the zero line, reduce plasma frequency contribution to absorption spectra, or, more generally, induce metal-to-insulator transition. This is particularly important in the context of optoelectronic, plasmonic, and epsilon-near-zero materials, as it enables materials design with a target functionality. While this work is limited to the specific gapped metal, we demonstrate that the fundamental physics is transferable to other gapped metals and can be generally used to design a wide class of new optoelectronic/plasmonic materials.Comment:

Developmental competence of bovine oocytes in maturation media supplemented with follicular fluid exosomes

The present study evaluated the role offollicular fluid exosomes on the developmental competence of bovine oocytes. Ovaries from slaughtered crossbred cattle were collected, all visible surface follicles aspirated, and culture-grade oocytes were subjected to further study. Exosomes were isolated from bovine follicular fluid by differential ultracentrifugation. A total of 358 oocytes selected for the study were randomly divided into two groups. Group I constituted 111 oocytes, in which normal maturation was carried. Group II constituted 247 oocytes, in which in vitro maturation (IVM) medium was supplemented with follicular fluid exosomes at 1 μL/100 μL IVM medium. Maturation was assessed after 24h of culture in a CO2 incubator maintained at 38.5°C in 95 per cent humidified atmosphere of 5 per cent CO2. Following IVM of oocytes for 24 h, in vitro fertilisation (IVF)was carried out by co-incubating with capacitated spermatozoa for 18 h and embryo culture was carried out subsequently. In group II oocytes supplemented with exosomes, a significantly higher maturation rate (p ≤0.01) (95.80 ±1.67 vs76.10 ± 0.95), fertilisation rate (53.68 ± 3.02vs37.85 ± 7.01) and cleavage rate (p ≤0.01) (43.66 ± 2.13vs(32.47 ± 5.23) was noticed compared to oocytes in group I without any supplementation. The present study established that supplementation of follicular fluid exosomescould improve the developmental competence of bovine oocytes

Novel precoded relay-assisted algorithm for cellular systems

Cooperative schemes are promising solutions for cellular wireless systems to improve system fairness, extend coverage and increase capacity. The use of relays is of significant interest to allow radio access in situations where a direct path is not available or has poor quality. A data precoded relay-assisted scheme is proposed for a system cooperating with 2 relays, each equipped with either a single antenna or 2-antenna array. However, because of the half-duplex constraint at the relays, relaying-assisted transmission would require the use of a higher order constellation than in the case when a continuous link is available from the BS to the UT. This would imply a penalty in the power efficiency. The simple precoding scheme proposed exploits the relation between QPSK and 16-QAM, by alternately transmitting through the 2 relays, achieving full diversity, while significantly reducing power penalty. Analysis of the pairwise error probability of the proposed algorithm with a single antenna in each relay is derived and confirmed with numerical results. We show the performance improvements of the precoded scheme, relatively to equivalent distributed SFBC scheme employing 16-QAM, for several channel quality scenarios. Data-precoded algorithm for multiple-relay-assisted systems

A data-precoded relay-assisted (RA) scheme is proposed for a system cooperating with multiple relay nodes (RNs), each equipped with either a single-antenna or a two-antenna array. The classical RA systems using distributed space-time/frequency coding algorithms, because of the half-duplex constraint at the relays, require the use of a higher order constellation than in the case of a continuous link transmission from the base station to the user terminal. This implies a penalty in the power efficiency. The proposed precoding algorithm exploits the relation between QPSK and 4 L -QAM, by alternately transmitting through L relays, achieving full diversity, while significantly reducing power penalty. This algorithm explores the situations where a direct path (DP) is not available or has poor quality, and it is a promising solution to extend coverage or increase system capacity. We present the analytical derivation of the gain obtained with the data-precoded algorithm in comparison with distributed space-frequency block code (SFBC) ones. Furthermore, analysis of the pairwise error probability of the proposed algorithm is derived and confirmed with numerical results. We evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme and compare it relatively to the equivalent distributed SFBC scheme employing 16-QAM and non-cooperative schemes, for several link quality scenarios and scheme configurations, highlighting the advantages of the proposed scheme
