[์˜๋ฌธ] Hypertension is the major risk factor of cardiovascular disease. Dietary salt restriction is an initial therapeutic approach for patients with un uncomplicated hypertention. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between salt intake and prceptions that some Korean hypertensives have about salt. Among subjects with uncomplicate essential hypertention who had been registered at Kwayungmyung Sung-ae Hospital and Public health of Kwayungmyung city, 60 men who had not changed antihypertensive drugs for 6 weeks were entered into study from June '1998 to August '1998. Daily 24-hour urine collections were obtained for measurement of urinary sodium and potassium. Other materials used in this study were questionnaire, anthropometric measurement, laboratory data and medical chart. Urinary sodium excretion was 233.1ยฑ97.1 mmol/24h and urinary potassium was 60.8ยฑ25.6 mmo1/24h. In this study, 24-hour urinary sodium excretion was not associated with age, duration of hypertension, economical status, education level, health behaviours and antihypertensive drugs. To the question "How much salt do you eat compared to normal people?" 48.3% of subjectives answered "more". Blood pressure and the perception of change of salt intake was significantly related to 24-housed urinary sodium. In this study I concluded that 24-houred urinary sodium of the subjects was not higher than normal persons. The perception of salt intake was incorrect but the perception of change of salt intake was relatively reliable marker of salt intake. Furthermore, the subjects with well controlled blood pressure had less salt intake than the subjects with uncontrolled blood pressure. As a follow-up measures, it is very important that the medical staff continously monitor and give feedback to correct the amount of salt intake of hypertensives. I hope one will develop new program for law salt intake and lead to moderate reduction of salt intake in hypertensives.prohibitio
