This paper starts with a critical view of the consilience discourse that has recently appeared in the South Korean academia in the wake of Edward Wilsons proposal for consilience among the academic disciplines. Despite its wide circulation as a catchword for cooperative activities across the disciplines, the proposal prompted a growing backlash among humanists who became worried that it may result in reducing the humanities to the natural sciences. While sharing the humanists concern, this paper argues that consilience among the academic disciplines is indispensable if we want to overcome the overall tendency of the humanities to disciplinary division โ€• adding, however, the proviso that the consilience, in turn, must be non-reductionist. More specifically, this article suggests that Basarab Nicolescus notion of transdisciplinarity can provide a non-reductionist consilience model and that in the branch of the humanities, the British cultural studies tradition has been functioning as such a model. In that it sees cultural studies as a powerful candidate for a radical transdiscipinary project for non-reductionist consilience, this paper distinguishes itself from Slavoj Zizeks stance that remains blind to the possible cooperation between cultural studies and the actually existing third culture
