A spatial/temporal relation computing technology for multimedia presentation designs

    Get PDF
[[abstract]]Relations among temporal intervals can be used to assist the automatic generation of multimedia presentations. In this paper, we analyze the domains of interval temporal relations. A set of algorithms is proposed to derive reasonable relations between intervals. Possible conflicts in the user specification are firstly detected and eliminated. Our mechanism then constructs partial order relations among temporal intervals before the presentation time chart is built. The algorithm is extended for objects in an arbitrary n-dimensional space. Thus, presentation layouts in a 2-D space, or Virtual Reality object representations in a 3-D space can be constructed. We use our algorithms to design a reasoning system that generates the schedule and layout of multimedia presentations. The main contributions of this paper are in its theoretical analysis of interval relation composition and a systematic approach for automation. We hope that, with our analysis and algorithms, the knowledge underlying temporal interval relations can be used in many computer applications, especially those in multimedia computing.[[conferencetype]]國際[[conferencedate]]19980106~19980109[[booktype]]紙本[[conferencelocation]]Kohala Coast, HI, US

A CASE tool supports the software life cycle of participator dependent multimedia presentations

[[abstract]]This paper presents a CASE tool for the specification, design, implementation, testing and maintenance of multimedia presentations. The proposed system is based on a Petri net machine to control event-based resource synchronization. Data flow diagrams and control flow diagrams are used as the specification of a multimedia presentation. The system then allows the specification to be stepwise refined toward the final multimedia presentation[[conferencetype]]國際[[conferencedate]]19980628~19980701[[booktype]]紙

Multimedia presentation design using data flow diagrams

[[abstract]]Structured analysis/design methodology has been used in software development for many years. We propose a revised data flow diagram technique and system based on the structured analysis methodology. The system allows a multimedia presentation designer to stepwise refine his/her presentation toward an interactive Petri net, which defines the temporal behaviour of the presentation. The generated presentation can mutate itself at runtime. Therefore, the presentation can act according to the audience's responses. The system is implemented in Visual C++ and Visual Basic running under Windows 95/NT[[conferencetype]]國際[[conferencedate]]19971028~19971031[[iscallforpapers]]Y[[conferencelocation]]Beijing, Chin

Indexing and retrieval scheme of the image database based on color and spatial relations

[[abstract]]We propose a new approach to retrieve images from an image database. We combine both color and spatial features of a picture to index and measure the similarity of images. We propose a new automatic indexing scheme of the image database according to our clustering method which could filter the image efficiently. As a technical contribution, a Seed-Filling like algorithm that could extract the shape and spatial relationship feature of the image is proposed. Also, the system is incorporated with a visual interface, which allows the user to specify objects as the spatial specification of pictures. With color identification and spatial similarity functions, the preliminary experience shows that the system is able to retrieve image information of a very high satisfaction.[[conferencetype]]國際[[conferencedate]]20000730~20000802[[booktype]]紙本[[conferencelocation]]New York, NY, US

Using Food Web as an evolution computing model for Internet-based multimedia agents

[[abstract]]The ecosystem is an evolutionary result of natural laws. Food Web (or Food Chain) embeds a set of computation rules of natural balance. Based one the concepts of Food Web, one of the laws that we may learn from the natural besides neural networks and genetic algorithms, we propose a theoretical computation model for mobile agent evolution on the Internet. We define an agent niche overlap graph and agent evolution states. We also propose a set of algorithms, which is used in our multimedia search programs, to simulate agent evolution. Agents are cloned to live on a remote host station based on three different strategies: the brute force strategy, the semi-brute force strategy, and the selective strategy. Evaluations of different strategies are discussed. Guidelines of writing mobile agent programs are proposed. The technique can be used in distributed information retrieval which allows the computation load to be added to servers, but significantly reduces the traffic of network communication.[[conferencedate]]19990607~19990611[[conferencelocation]]Florence, Ital
