    A commercialized high power LED is widely applied not only on land, but also on merchant and naval vessels. However, the light source for replacement of halogen or xenon lamp is still under development. This thesis dealt with the design and fabrication of an LED searchlight for naval vessels to replace the searchlight equipped with a 1kW halogen lamp. It has many advantages such as long lifetime, high luminous efficiency, instantaneous turn on and off, and high durability. In addition, it can withstand the vibration and impact caused by the rolling and pitching of vessels. A simulation was carried out to investigate the influences of the focal length, diameter, and depth of parabolic reflector on the light condensing. Based on the results, a reflector with a diameter of 315mm and a depth of 25mm, and a COB type LED were selected as the optimal combination. Further, to increase luminous efficiency and lifetime of LED, a water cooling system was used to keep the junction temperature below 25โ„ƒ. Finally, the LED searchlight can achieve a lifetime of 50,000 hours and a luminous efficiency over 100lm/W. Luminous intensity of the proposed searchlight was 2.14 x 106cd, which was improved 500% with only 26% of power consumption compared with the 1kW halogen searchlight. Beam angle with a value of 1.94ยฐ also met the standard KDS-6230-1046.     FDG Uptake in the Pathologically Proven Papillary Thyroid Cancer

    Purpose: Metastatic thyroid cancers with I-131 uptake have been known to show no increase of FDG uptake whereas those without I-131 uptake tend to demonstrate increased uptake on PET. In this study, we evaluated the degree of FDG uptake in primary thyroid cancers of papillary histology before surgery. Material & Methods: Forty FDG PET studies were performed on the patients who had papillary cancer proven by fine needle aspiration. The degree of FDG uptake was visually categorized as positive or negative (positive if the tumor showed discernible FDG; negative if the tumor didn't) and the peak standard uptake value (peak SUV) of the papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) were compared with the size of PTC. Results: The mean size of 26 PTC with positive FDG uptake was 1.9ยฑ1.4 cm(0.5๏ฝž5 cm). In 13 PTC with negative FDG uptake, the mean size of those was 0.5ยฑ0.2 cm (0.2๏ฝž0.9 cm). All PTC larger than 1cm (2.5ยฑ1.4 cm, 1๏ฝž5 cm) have positive FDG uptake (peak SUV=6.4ยฑ5.7, 1.7๏ฝž22.7). Among the micropapillary thyroid cancer (microPTC; PTC smaller than 1cm), 8 microPTC show positive FDG uptake(peak SUV=2.9ยฑ1.3, 1.7๏ฝž5.5), while 13 microPTC show negative finding(peak SUV=1.3ยฑ0.2, 1.1๏ฝž1.7). The size of microPTC with positive FDG uptake is significantly larger than that of microPTC with negative FDG uptake (0.7ยฑ0.1 cm vs 0.4ยฑ0.2 cm, p=0.01). Conclusion: All PTCs larger than 1cm show positive FDG uptake in our study. In other words, thyroid lesions larger than 1cm with negative FDG uptake are unlikely to be PTC. So far, only poorly differentiated thyroid cancers are known to show increased FDG uptake. Our results seem to be contradictory to what is known in the literature. Further study is needed to understand better the significance of increased FDG uptake in PTC in relation to expression of NIS and GLUT.ope

    Background: Sleep duration is associated with many diseases, yet few studies have been performed on the association between sleep duration and bone mineral density(BMD) in Korea. In this study we investigated the association between sleep duration and bone mineral density in adults over 18 years of age. Methods: Subjects of this study were adults over 18 years of age who responded to a questionnaire on sleep duration and underwent BMD measurement by dual X-ray absorptiometry. Comprehensive data on the study sample was obtained from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(KHANES) conducted in 2010. Age- and sex-stratified multiple regression analyses were conducted with adjustment for possible confounding factors. Results: There was an inverse, dose-dependent association between sleep duration and BMD measured in the total femur, femur neck, lumbar spine and total bone in both women over 50 years of age and men between 30 and 49 years of age. Sex-stratified multiple regression analysis adjusted for age and body mass index revealed a negative correlation between sleep duration and BMD in the total femur and femur neck in both genders over 50 years of age, as well as in women between ages 30 and 49. Initial significance disappeared after adjustment for additional covariates including smoking, alcohol, and exercise. Conclusion: Significant variations in regional BMD with sleep duration were observed among women and men between ages 30 and 49. Prolonged sleep duration appears to be a risk factor for low bone mineral density. Thus, adequate sleep duration is important for preventing osteoporosisope
