Creatio Ex Nihilo and the Literal QurâÄn
In the modern age, the confl ict between science and religion manifests itself in the debate between evolution and creation. If we adopt a creationistâs reading of the QurâÄn, we discover an interesting anomaly. Reading the QurâÄn literally does not necessarily provide the foundation of creationism. Creationists usually have in mind the concept of creatio ex nihilo, or âcreation out of nothingâ. However, in the QurâÄn, one of the words used for creation, khalaqnÄ, has the root khlq, which means âto splitâ or âto divideâ. This root word may even apply to the biological process of cell division. Therefore, from a scientifi c perspective, using the word khlq to describe this physical process is not problematic. In addition, with close textual analysis of the QurâÄn, we realize that the word for creation âbeâ does not truly describe the moment of creation, but rather that of âbeingâ. The QurâÄn separates the notion of creation from being, which poses the question as to what the text constitutes as the ontological nature of the human being and the universe. Therefore, even if we do adopt a literal reading of the QurâÄn, we fi nd that it does not necessarily support a worldview that endorses creatio ex nihilo

World wide web and scientific publishing
The relationship of scientific publishing and the world wide web steadily evolves as
the internet technology advances in its sophistication and ability to reach an
increasing number of people. Many well established medical publication currently
publish their journal electronically as well as in print format. Forced by high volume of
manuscript submissions as well as financial restraints, some journals publish a
number of their articles on the internet alone, while others-such as this journal-are
starting an entirely new publication in an electronic version only. The presentation of
articles in the field of pediatric cardiology electronically has numerous advantages,
particularly the ability to include movie clips, sound and animations in the published
articles. This format of publication continues to have limitation. It is still not as widely
available as a print journal could be and it is awkward to curl up in bed with a lap top,
no matter how small or light it ispeer-reviewe
