In my own life, I have a set of brands that describe my personality, interests, and lifestyle. So, how do companies build this connection between the brand and the consumers’ self-perception? I researched the methods used to establish self-congruence with a brand, meaning how the brand’s personality fits with the consumer’s actual self, versus the consumer’s ideal self. I also examined the different ways advertising can increase brand congruity with the consumer, especially focusing on celebrity endorsements, purchase promotions, and the use of imagery in specific forms of advertising

An Examination of the Deteriorative Mechanisms and Enabling Factors at the Wanamaker Memorial Tower in Philadelphia

    Get PDF
The Wanamaker Tower is in a precarious physical state; as will be demonstrated in this thesis; exterior problems with source moisture control have let to the start of failure of the decorative marble cladding of the interior spaces. The physical conservation problem is compounded by the absence of a constituency or advocacy for stewardship of the tower due to family disinterest and the dissolution of the parish congregation. This thesis will examine the condition of the Tower and the mechanisms of deterioration leading to those conditions. This thesis will also present a conservation plan aimed at addressing the treatment of the conditions as well as the future stewardship needs of the Wanamaker Memorial Tower

This composite woven fabric exhibits interesting performance in terms of impact resistance and damage tolerance. These properties come from the presence of strands woven through the thickness. As a result, this material can be a very interesting alternative to conventional laminated composite, which have only planar oriented fibers, for aeronautical applications where elements are subjected to impacts and subjected to delamination. This work presents an experimental campaign aimed at characterizing the behavior of the material in the in-plane directions and through the thickness. Subsequently behavior laws are developed to reproduce the mechanical behavior in each direction. Seting up the mechanics of damage, as well as the inelastic behavior were the most complex parts. This model is subsequently implemented in the ABAQUS / Explicit finite element software using a VUMAT subroutine. Simulations of the material mechanical behavior are first performed to validate the predictions of the model in all the directions. Then, quasi-static indentation tests are performed and the results compared to the model predictions. Finally, dynamic impact simulations are carried out on the woven composite using rigid and soft projectiles as well as different configurations. Comparisons with experimental results show the model's good ability to reproduce the behavior of the material during impact with a rigid low-velocity projectile. High impact energies reflect shortcomings in the mechanics of damage close to rupture. Impact results with a soft low-velocity projectile are encouraging and show the ability of the model to provide a correct estimate of the impact force, although overestimated in some configuration

Introduction: Noncarious cervical lesions have multifactorial etiology origin and its appearance has increased with greater permanence of teeth in the mouth. The treatment may involve instructions for oral hygiene, diet instruction and restorative treatment, the latter being the most recommended to be ceased mineral loss and does not occur impaction of food and that the aesthetic is returned. However, there are challenges in adhesion obtained during the restorative procedure of this type of lesion, since this pathologically altered dentin has totally or partially obliterated dentinal tubules that can persist after acidic conditioning, making it difficult to form the hybrid layer. Because the cervical lesions of non-carious do not have mechanical retention, survival depends on the adhesive Bond obtained between the restorative material and dental substrate. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical performance of composite resin restorations in cervical lesions of non-carious due to different application protocols of the Single Bond Universal adhesive system through the USPHS modified method. Methodology: To this, 37 patients received at least three cervical restorations. The restorations were performed with three different adhesive application system protocols, according to the three groups: Group 1: Total etch + Application of Single Bond Universal (SBU), Group 2: Acid enamel conditioning + Application of adhesive system SBU and Group 3: Self-etch – Application of the SBU adhesive system None of the cavities received any prior prepare surface or bevel and all restored with composite resin Z350 (3M / ESPE) under absolute isolation of the operative field. The returns of patients for evaluation occurred in a week (BASELINE), 12, 18 and 24 months and were valuated the following criteria: retention, marginal staining, anatomical shape, superficial smoothness, marginal integrity, secondary caries and color. The results were statistically analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis test with a significance level of 5% and survival analysis. Results: In group 1 the retention criterion obtained a success rate of 96% and in group 2 and 3 a success rate of 92%, the other criteria were 100% successful in 12 months. In 24 months, the retention criterion was 81% successful for all groups, the other criteria were 100% successful. After 11 and 24 months there was no statistically significant difference between any of the evaluated criteria. Conclusion: According to the results after 12 and 24 months of follow up there was clinical success in all the parameters evaluated for the different protocols of universal adhesive system application

Poor Relief and Philanthropy in the British West Indies, 1834–1938

Ph. D. Thesis. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the relationship between state-organised poor relief and self-help initiatives in the Anglophone Caribbean, from emancipation to 1938 through three key areas: examining the evolution of British poor laws in colonial societies; analysing applications made by paupers for relief; and charting the development of black-organised charity, social work and mutual aid. The establishment of laws for the relief of the poor shows us what theoretical concerns were being tackled, as laws conceptualised in Britain for Britain were translocated to her West Indian colonies which had no experience of administering poor relief prior to emancipation in 1834. The evolution of colonial poor relief reveals conflicts between the interests of the planter oligarchy, the clergy and evangelical organisations, and British metropolitan interests represented by the governor. These discussions provide a foundation upon which to situate what is essentially a study of pauper agency. The thesis presents the common survival strategies employed by all classes of persons designated poor, from rural labourers to urban professionals. How did they endeavour to maintain family cohesion and support one another in the face of extreme and pervasive poverty? How did their actions refute elite moral judgements upon their racial characteristics and personal interrelationships, and in what ways does the evidence challenge the officially stated causes of poverty, illness and mortality? From basic sharing of food, to pooling savings, to establishing friendly societies and lodges, the activities of the poorer classes reveal how they understood their position as black colonial subjects and how they utilised the trappings of empire, patriotism and Christian respectability to their advantage, while retaining African traditions out of which they developed a uniquely Caribbean culture and identity. Scholarship on the lives of the poor in the colonial West Indies has increasingly been concerned with the extent to which the people were able to exercise agency – tools and strategies with which they might resist imperial policies and practices and carve out their own paths in life. The reason for this interest in uncovering agency is the paucity of literature in archives produced by the poor or about their lived experiences, meaning that other methods are needed to ‘speak’ those silences. Scholars have therefore focused on different areas in which to evidence people’s attempts to maintain autonomy, such as through encounters with the judiciary, petitions to government, and non-compliance with state-sponsored services such as education and health. Presenting letters written by paupers seeking relief goes some way towards addressing the hiatus of first hand accounts and allows a more direct window onto the feelings, interests and strategies of the poor. Alongside the poor, women have suffered a similar silence in archives, yet not only were the majority of poor relief applicants female, but women also outnumbered men as members of friendly societies. Furthermore, black women in the 1930s assumed the role of unpaid social workers establishing children’s homes, training facilities and pressure groups to effect change at the government level. Thus, the role of women in the development of the politics of self-determination cannot be ignored. The study concludes that one hundred years of parish poor relief never went beyond addressing the manifestations of poverty, rather than its root causes. The real impetus came from the working classes themselves, who, aided by contact with the outside world principally through migrations and trans-regional benevolent and fraternal societies, were able to maintain economic survival and social cohesion, and work collaboratively to raise the standard of living, improve educational and employment opportunities and lobby for change. Their organisational structures supported the emergence of trade unions and political activism. Hence, alongside petitions to government and the judiciary, poor relief is established as an arena of resistance to hegemony

The article is focused on the role of relationships established through the godparenting of one’s children within the socio-cosmological life of the Chiquitano indigenous people, who speak their own isolated language and live in southwest Mato Grosso, Brazil, close to the border with Bolivia. Based on ethnographic inquiry, the article shows that, in these indigenous people’s view, godparenting (compadrio) is a constructed relationship, guided by certain rules and practices of commensality, ritual and sociability, and operating in the passage between “nature and culture” as well as in the person’s humanization processes
