ASHMET: A computer code for estimating insolation incident on tilted surfaces

A computer code, ASHMET, was developed by MSFC to estimate the amount of solar insolation incident on the surfaces of solar collectors. Both tracking and fixed-position collectors were included. Climatological data for 248 U. S. locations are built into the code. The basic methodology used by ASHMET is the ASHRAE clear-day insolation relationships modified by a clearness index derived from SOLMET-measured solar radiation data to a horizontal surface

L’Ironie, un moyen d’échapper à la censure

Among Arab authors, a number of Egyptian writers use irony when addressing a criticism to the politics settled by the authorities. The enunciator of the text is perfectly aware that what he writes, or the speech he assigns to one of his characters, is a false compliment addressed to the government policy, since he intends to say or to make say the very contrary. He manages, at the same time, to put his words, and/or those of his character, in such a context that allows the reader to understand that the apparent meaning of the uttered speech is not what the enunciator, or the character, suggests. This same context also allows the reader to decode the secret meaning, easy to find, considering that the apparent meaning of the speech and its secret one are in relation of contrariety. To demonstrate that, I take as an example a short story published in 1980 by Yûsuf al-Qa‘îd from his collection Hikâyât al-zaman al-djarîh (Tales of the Injured Time).Bien des écrivains égyptiens, parmi d’autres auteurs arabes, ont recours à l’ironie lorsqu’il s’agit de critiquer les politiques mises en place par les autorités, L’énonciateur du texte sait parfaitement que ce qu’il écrit ou le discours qu’il fait tenir à l’un de ses personnages est un compliment mensonger à l’égard de la politique gouvernementale, puisqu’il entend dire ou faire dire le strict contraire. En même temps, il s’arrange pour placer ses propos et/ou ceux du personnage dans un contexte tel qu’il permet au lecteur de comprendre que le sens apparent des propos énoncés n’est pas ce que l’énonciateur ou le personnage veulent donner à entendre. Ce même contexte permet aussi au lecteur de décoder le sens secret, facile à trouver, vu que le sens apparent des propos et leur sens secret sont en relation de contrariété. Pour en faire la démonstration, je prendrai comme exemple une nouvelle publiée en 1980 par Yûsuf al-Qa‘îd dans son recueil Hikâyât al-zaman al-djarîh (« Histoires de l’époque blesse »)

Heavy Lift Launch Vehicles for 1995 and Beyond

A Heavy Lift Launch Vehicle (HLLV) designed to deliver 300,000 lb to a 540 n mi circular polar orbit may be required to meet national needs for 1995 and beyond. The vehicle described herein can accommodate payload envelopes up to 50 ft diameter by 200 ft in length. Design requirements include reusability for the more expensive components such as avionics and propulsion systems, rapid launch turnaround time, minimum hardware inventory, stage and component flexibility and commonality, and low operational costs. All ascent propulsion systems utilize liquid propellants, and overall launch vehicle stack height is minimized while maintaining a reasonable vehicle diameter. The ascent propulsion systems are based on the development of a new liquid oxygen/hydrocarbon booster engine and liquid oxygen/liquid hydrogen upper stage engine derived from today's SSME technology. Wherever possible, propulsion and avionics systems are contained in reusable propulsion/avionics modules that are recovered after each launch

A 20k Payload Launch Vehicle Fast Track Development Concept Using an RD-180 Engine and a Centaur Upper Stage

A launch vehicle concept to deliver 20,000 lb of payload to a 100-nmi orbit has been defined. A new liquid oxygen/kerosene booster powered by an RD-180 engine was designed while using a slightly modified Centaur upper stage. The design, development, and test program met the imposed 40-mo schedule by elimination of major structural testing by increased factors of safety and concurrent engineering concepts.
