Educational Inequality in Argentina: The best and worst performers.

What do we know about inequality in educational attainment across Argentina's cities? To answer this question, we present the education Gini coefficient for the period 2002-2007. Using microdata from the national household survey, we document the following results. First, educational inequality has declined in almost all metropolitan areas whereas i t has increased in Posadas, Mar del Plata, Rosario and Formosa. Second, although there are no important differences in the average years of schooling across cities, great disparities exist with respect to the education Gini. Solvability and uniqueness criteria for generalized Sylvester-type equations

We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the generalized $\star$-Sylvester matrix equation, $AXB + CX^\star D = E$, to have exactly one solution for any right-hand side E. These conditions are given for arbitrary coefficient matrices $A, B, C, D$ (either square or rectangular) and generalize existing results for the same equation with square coefficients. Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov Calculations in Coordinate Space: Neutron-Rich Sulfur, Zirconium, Cerium, and Samarium Isotopes

Using the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) mean field theory in coordinate space, we investigate ground state properties of the sulfur isotopes from the line of stability up to the two-neutron dripline ($^{34-52}S$). In particular, we calculate two-neutron separation energies, quadrupole moments, and rms-radii for protons and neutrons. Evidence for shape coexistence is found in the very neutron-rich sulfur isotopes. We compare our calculations with results from relativistic mean field theory and with available experimental data. We also study the properties of neutron-rich zirconium ($^{102,104}Zr$), cerium ($^{152}Ce$), and samarium ($^{158,160}Sm$) isotopes which exhibit very large prolate quadrupole deformations.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables submitted to Phys. Algunas herramientas estadísticas para una evaluación plurimetódica

Posicionados en lo que Medina Rivilla y Castillo Arredondo (1998) llaman “perspectiva plurimetódica”, y considerando a la evaluación como un proceso reflexivo, sistemático y riguroso de indagación sobre la realidad, en un contexto regido por principios de validez, fiabilidad, participación y ética, nos planteamos la necesidad de analizar las propiedades y los requisitos métricos de una evaluación y las respuestas de los alumnos. Para ello, proponemos utilizar herramientas estadísticas que permitan un análisis exhaustivo de cómo se ha formulado la evaluación y cuál ha sido el grado de comprensión por parte de los alumnos. Los estudios de índices de análisis de ítems y de fiabilidad son útiles para generar instancias de reflexión sobre la práctica docente que permitan rever no sólo el proceso de enseñanza aprendizaje sino la confección de los instrumentos de evaluación. Además, una encuesta de opinión basada en la metacognición puede ser de ayuda para analizar el control y la conciencia que los alumnos tienen sobre sus procesos cognitivos

Bacubirito: An Outstanding Cosmic Sample on Earth

The Bacubirito meteorite, although largely forgotten by the scientific community after its excavation in 1902, remains an incredible artifact and inspired generations of Mexican scientists. It is the fifth largest meteorite in the world and the longest with a length of 4.16 m. Using the Monte Carlo method, an innovative geometrical model and scanner, we have been the first to calculate the precise dimensions and mass (21 tons) of Bacubirito meteorite’s complex structure. Moreover, we are advocating that it be added to the list of world heritage sites due to its scientific, cultural, and historical significance in Mexico and the world
