    The New Scarlet Letter A: An Exploration of the Power of Online Informational Websites to Influence and Brand Those Impacted by Autism Spectrum Disorders

    Technical communication is often perceived by the public as containing objective information that is supported by scientific data. Audiences of such products are unaware of the rhetoric employed within its content that works to perpetuate social constructions of dominant ideologies, including digital texts such as informational websites. This article presents a comparison of the rhetoric employed on two national websites, Autism Speaks and Generation Rescue that convey similar information on Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs), but present ASDs differently in terms of language, tone, and lens. Through the acknowledgement of these differences, I posit that web sites affiliated with the medical/scientific community such as Autism Speaks work to perpetuate damaging biases toward and prejudices about the ASD community, while operating under the commonplace of being objective. This article argues for identifying, interrogating, and tearing down the walls of marginalization and prejudice that continue to stand between society and those impacted by disability. These walls are strengthened by the refusal to acknowledge the voices of the community, those with lived experiential information regarding the world of ASDs. Thus, instead of perpetuating the rhetoric that those with disabilities should work to overcome and accommodate, I encourage technical communicators to interrogate their normalizing practices in order to challenge hegemonic notions of disability as a means to project positive imagery that could result in increased notions of possibility and recognition of those with ASDs

    Maternal pomegranate juice intake and brain structure and function in infants with intrauterine growth restriction: A randomized controlled pilot study.

    Polyphenol-rich pomegranate juice has been shown to have benefit as a neuroprotectant in animal models of neonatal hypoxic-ischemia. No published studies have investigated maternal polyphenol administration as a potential neuroprotectant in at-risk newborns, such as those with intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). This was a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind pilot study to investigate the impact of maternal pomegranate juice intake in pregnancies with IUGR, on newborn brain structure and function at term-equivalent age (TEA). Mothers with IUGR at 24-34 weeks\u27 gestation were recruited from Barnes-Jewish Hospital obstetrical clinic. Consented mothers were randomized to treatment (8 oz. pomegranate juice) or placebo (8 oz. polyphenol-free juice) and continued to take juice daily from enrollment until delivery (mean 20.1 and 27.1 days, respectively). Infants underwent brain MRI at TEA (36-41 weeks\u27 gestation). Brain measures were compared between groups including: brain injury score, brain metrics, brain volumes, diffusion tensor imaging and resting state functional connectivity. Statistical analyses were undertaken as modified intention-to-treat (including randomized participants who received their allocated intervention and whose infants received brain MRI) and per-protocol (including participants who strictly adhered to the protocol, based on metabolite status). Seventy-seven mothers were randomized to treatment (n = 40) or placebo (n = 37). Of these, 28 and 27 infants, respectively, underwent term-equivalent MRI. There were no group differences in brain injury, metrics or volumes. However, treatment subjects displayed reduced diffusivity within the anterior and posterior limbs of the internal capsule compared with placebo. Resting state functional connectivity demonstrated increased correlation and covariance within several networks in treatment subjects, with alterations most apparent in the visual network in per-protocol analyses. Direct effects on health were not found. In conclusion, maternal pomegranate juice intake in pregnancies with known IUGR was associated with altered white matter organization and functional connectivity in the infant brain, suggesting differences in brain structure and function following in utero pomegranate juice exposure, warranting continued investigation.     Did You See That? A Study of Change Blindness

    OBJECTIVES Increasing concern has been expressed regarding the safety implications of drivers attempting to use in-vehicle devices other than cellular phones while driving. To address this issue, the effect of cognitive load on visual attention merits investigation. Strayer and Johnston (2001) found invehicle system use, specifically cell-phone use, disrupts performance by diverting attention to an engaging cognitive context other than the one immediately associated with driving. Recarte and Nunes (2000) demonstrated that scanning patterns and visual attention can be disrupted by cognitive load. In-vehicle systems can increase the cognitive load of the driver, making it more difficult for the driver to direct attention to the visual scene. The change blindness phenomenon may be useful way to investigate how cognitive load affects attention. Change blindness is the inability to detect scene change when the change occurs in conjunction with an action such as a blink (O’Regan, Deubel, Clark, and Rensink, 2000), eye movement (Wallis and Bulthoff, 2000), or an image that masks the onset of the change (Simons and Levin, 1998). The aim of this experiment was to study the effect of cognitive loading on individuals’ ability to detect change in their visual environment using a speech-based email task. METHODS Twenty participants completed a series of five conditions. In two of these conditions the participants did just one task: either the e-mail task or the visual search task. In the other three conditions participants completed the e-mail and the visual search tasks concurrently. In one email task condition the speech recognition system worked perfectly. In a second condition, speech recognition errors caused the wrong menu item to be selected. In a third condition, speech recognition errors caused the user to be displaced to the wrong menu. In three of the visual search task conditions participants were asked to identify changes that occurred in visual scenes, using the Rensink, et al. (1997) flicker paradigm while navigating a speech-based e-mail system. The visual task presented a series of four displays. These were: an unaltered image (300ms), a gray screen (1150ms), a second image (300ms), and a gray screen (1150ms). The second image was either the unaltered image or an image altered by the addition or removal of an element. The remaining conditions for both the e-mail task and visual search task were labeled as baseline. The baseline measurements were used to evaluate the effects of cognitive load on detection of scene changes. RESULTS Analyses showed that detection of scene changes took significantly longer when participants were cognitively loaded with the e-mail task (mean 5.05) compared to when they were not (mean 4.35), F(3,67)=11.13, p< 0.0001. Analyses also showed participants took significantly longer to determine that the scene had not changed (mean 5.99) than to detect a change had occurred (mean 3.72), F(2,67)=271.95, p <0.0001. Scene detection accuracy was significantly reduced when participants were cognitively loaded with the e-mail task, F(3,67)=5.47, p0.0010. Speech recognition errors introduced by the researcher had little effect on times to determine scene changes as well as time to detect meaningful and non-meaningful scene changes. CONCLUSION The results of this study demonstrate that change detection is sensitive to cognitive load and that endogenous control of visual attention may have been affected by the introduction of the e-mail system. It also shows that the paradigm of scenes with and without changes seems to be a promising and sensitive tool for measuring the effects of cognitive load on an individual’s ability to detect change.     Fiber-Optic Imaging in an Internal Combustion Engine Test Rig

    The formation of particulate matter (PM/soot), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and other byproducts of the combustion process in diesel engines is controlled by spatiotemporally varying quantities within the engine cylinders which traditional sensors cannot resolve. This study explores the use of an advanced sensing technique using an optical probe which can be used to produce highly spatiotemporally resolved in cylinder images of the flame formation during the combustion stroke. Using a fiber optic cable and custom lensing system adapted to fit a pre-existing pressure transducer port, light from within the cylinder can be transmitted through the imaging probe to a high speed camera where high resolution images of the flame are captured. This method enables no modifications to the engine geometry or materials, which ensures that the combustion and heat transfer characteristics are the same in the operating engine as they would be without the sensor implementation. Simulation results of an optical system to meet the desired design constraints are presented and discussed in addition to models of the imaging probe design.
