Sedimentology and stratigraphy were studied for the Jurassic-Cretaceous Tetori Group in Nagato River area (southern Toyama Prefecture) in order to reconstruct the sedimentary environments and processes of an alluvial depositional system. The Tetori Group in the study area unconformably overlies the Hida metamorphic rocks, and is divided into the Nagatogawa and Atotsugawa Formations in the ascending order, which correspond to the Uppermost Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous Itoshiro and Akaiwa Subgroups, respectively. The Nagatogawa Formation is subdivided into the lower Ioridanitoge Conglomerate Member (about 250 meters thick) and the upper Inotani Sandstone-mudstone Member (about 150 meters thick). The Atotsugawa Formation is subdivided into the lower Minamimatadani Conglomerate Member (about 70 meters thick) and the upper Wasabu Sandstone-mudstone Member (about 700 meters thick). Fossil assemblage, consisting of plants, freshwater mollusks, tortoise shells, and ganoid scales, indicates that the four members were deposited in non-marine environments. The sedimentary facies analysis defined five sedimentary facies (Facies A~E) from the Tetori Group in the study area. The conglomerate-dominant Facies A and Facies C were formed in alluvial fans, and in a proximal braided river, respectively. Facies B consists of the alternating beds of mudstone, sandstone and conglomerate, which were formed in the braidplain near a distal alluvial fan. Facies D is dominated by sandstone intercalating thin layers of conglomerate formed in a distal braided river environment. Facies E consists of alternating beds of sandstone and mudstone deposited in a meandering river environment. Results of the facies analysis, together with paleocurrent and composition analysis of the coarse clastics, conducted four stages of the depositional history of the Tetori Group in the Nagatogawa River area. Stage 1 is characterized by the development of alluvial fans, proximal braided river and partially distal braided river, and this alluvial system deposited the Ioridanitoge Conglomerate Member. The current of the braided river generally directed from west to east, and delivered gravel of granitic and felsitic volcanic rocks originated from the Hida Terrane. Stage 2 was the period of the Inotani Sandstone-mudstone Member, which was deposited mainly in a meandering river flowing from north to south. In Stage 3, the Minamimatadani Conglomerate Member was deposited in the distal braided river with two current directions. One was from east to west, and carried the gravels of the siliceous sedimentary rocks. Another was from north to south, and delivered the rocks of the Hida Terrane. Stage 4 is characterized by the development of a meandering river, generally flowing from north to south. This meandering river system lasted for a long time and deposited thick alternating beds of the Wasabu Sandstone-mudstone Member

An Exploration of US NCAA Division I (DI) Female Soccer Players’ Perceptions Regarding Morality in Sport

To date, little research exists with regard to how athletes think about morality within sport (e.g., Bredemeier & Shields, 1984, 1986; Kavussanu, 2007, 2008; Shields & Bredemeier, 1995; Weiss, 1987), and even less exists which explores the concepts of bracketed morality or game reasoning within sport contexts (e.g., Bredemeier & Shields, 1984, 1986; Kavussanu, Boardley, Sager, & Ring, 2013. The same is true for research related to sport moral identity (e.g., Bredemeier & Shields, 1984, 1986; Kavussanu, 2007, 2008; Kavussanu, Willoughby, & Ring, 2012; Sage & Kavussanu, 2010; Sage, Kavussuanu, & Duda, 2006; Shields & Bredemeier, 1995; Weiss, 1987) and none, to date, has explored character strengths within sport. Thus, the purpose of the current study was to use interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA; Smith, 1996) to explore U.S. NCAA DI female soccer players’ perceptions regarding morality in sport. The results are presented in two separate manuscripts; one focuses on moral identity in DI female soccer players and the other focuses on moral dilemmas faced by DI female soccer players. For the first study, results included female soccer players’ perceptions of (a) their moral and athlete selves, (b) the saliency of each and (c) any conflicts related to these two self-identity components. For the second study, results were developed from two major themes: (a) On-field dilemmas and (b) Offfield dilemmas. Implications for sport psychology consultants (SPCs) are twofold. First, SPCs need to be more aware of what elite-level female soccer players value in their sport, as well as help them build on their moral strengths. Secondly, SPCs should work toward understanding the dilemmas female soccer players face in their sport as well as ways to help them handle such dilemmas

Involvement of ribosomal protein L6 in assembly of functional 50S ribosomal subunit in Escherichia coli cells

Ribosomal protein L6, an essential component of the large (50S) subunit, primarily binds to helix 97 of 23S rRNA and locates near the sarcin/ricin loop of helix 95 that directly interacts with GTPase translation factors. Although L6 is believed to play important roles in factor-dependent ribosomal function, crucial biochemical evidence for this hypothesis has not been obtained. We constructed and characterized an Escherichia coli mutant bearing a chromosomal L6 gene (rplF) disruption and carrying a plasmid with an arabinose-inducible L6 gene. Although this ホ猫6 mutant grew more slowly than its wild-type parent, it proliferated in the presence of arabinose. Interestingly, cell growth in the absence of arabinose was biphasic. Early growth lasted only a few generations (LI-phase) and was followed by a suspension of growth for several hours (S-phase). This suspension was followed by a second growth phase (LII-phase). Cells harvested at both LI- and S-phases contained ribosomes with reduced factor-dependent GTPase activity and accumulated 50S subunit precursors (45S particles). The 45S particles completely lacked L6. Complete 50S subunits containing L6 were observed in all growth phases regardless of the L6-depleted condition, implying that the ホ猫6 mutant escaped death because of a leaky expression of L6 from the complementing plasmid. We conclude that L6 is essential for the assembly of functional 50S subunits at the late stage. We thus established conditions for the isolation of L6-depleted 50S subunits, which are essential to study the role of L6 in translation.ArticleBiochemical and Biophysical Research Communications.473(1):237-242(2016)journal articl

Drainage or Packing of the Sella? Transsphenoidal Surgery for Primary Pituitary Abscess: Report of Two Cases

    Get PDF
The detailed surgical procedure of the transsphenoidal surgery for pituitary abscess has scarcely been described previously because it is a very rare clinical entity. The authors reported two cases of primary pituitary abscess. In case 1, the anterior wall of the sella turcica was reconstructed with the vomer bone after irrigating the abscess cavity, but the sella was not packed by fat for fear of the persistent infection by devascularized tissues. This led to the postoperative meningocele, the cerebrospinal fluid leak, and bacterial meningitis despite the successful abscess drainage. In case 2, tight sellar packing and reconstruction of the sellar wall were performed to avoid these postoperative complications, which resulted in complete drainage and uneventful postoperative course. Although accumulation of more cases is obviously needed to establish the definitive surgical technique in pituitary abscess surgery, our experience might suggest that packing of the sella is not impeditive for postoperative sufficient drainage
