A Study of the Origins of Behavior Problems

In special studies this semester I have simply began the study of adult problems arising from childhood. To do this I read several books and an occasional periodical. The following paper tends to be an overview tying together three of these books. I only made a few references to the other three mentioned in the bibliography. The content for this paper in mainly a listing of the many aspects of personality development. The first section deals generally with the developmental tasks from infancy to adulthood. The second continues with the behavior problems of children who have failed to succeed in such tasks. I then, in the third section, delve into adult problems stemming from childhood. In this way I hope to show the progression of behavioral problems expressed in some adults

A comparison of face-to-face and online instructional delivery methods in large-group settings in a university undergraduate wellness course

Utilization of online delivery of the lecture component in an undergraduate wellness course is unique and undocumented in research. Wellness courses are traditionally taught with face-to-face lectures plus an activity component. This discipline is distinctive in terms of its activity components that are not conducted online. The purpose of this study was to investigate two large group face-to-face and online courses to determine if the students enrolled were demographically equivalent and if there were differences in academic achievement in terms of final course grades and between subgroups of students. For the fall 2006 and spring 2007 semesters, 1,814 students were enrolled in the Personal Wellness course. Chi-square test of independence and independent-samples t -tests results revealed there were demographic differences between the face-to-face and online delivery methods ( p \u3c .05). Significant differences were found for gender, ethnicity, major, ACT scores, and semester course load. Students\u27 final course grades were examined using an independent-samples t -test to determine if students were academically more successful in the face-to-face or online delivery format. No significant differences were discovered in students\u27 final course grades between the two delivery methods ( t (2) = .244, p \u3e .05). ANOVA and independent-samples t -test results revealed significant differences in final course grades among various student subgroups ( p \u3c .05). Differences were found based on gender, ethnicity, major, and year in school. Based on these results, it was recommended that both face-to-face and online sections of Personal Wellness be offered and that different content be offered to best meet the needs of the diverse students enrolled. A significant difference was found in student subgroups\u27 and their final course grades based on their choice of face-to-face or online delivery. These conclusions should influence how the Personal Wellness course is taught in the future at this particular university. Future research should further examine these characteristics which may have educational impact for teachers, administrators, and students themselves

China\u27s Foreign Invested Partnership Enterprise Law: The Lifeless or Sleeping Dragon?

    Get PDF
Investors and the Chinese government tout the March 2010 authorization of the Foreign Invested Partnership as an exciting new method for foreign investment in China. However, this comment argues that the Foreign Invested Partnership is not likely to become a vibrant short or long-term platform for foreign direct investment. The historical trends of China’s three other vehicles for foreign direct investment from 1979 to the present provide two key conclusions. First, foreign investors will not utilize Foreign Invested Partnerships until they receive detailed implementing regulations from China’s central government. Second, support or restrictions from the Chinese government can drive or inhibit use of an investment vehicle. China’s Foreign Invested Partnership lacks detailed regulations, and is also not likely to receive them in the future because of increased involvement with local authorities. Additionally, it is not likely to receive support from the Chinese government because of lingering suspicions of the partnership enterprise and an ongoing political transition. Because foreign investors will shy away from this unpredictability, the Foreign Invested Partnership is not likely to be widely utilized in the short or long term. The author recommends that Foreign Invested Partnership proponents overcome these hurdles by pushing for detailed, favorable regulations for equity investment-focused Foreign Invested Partnerships

Bacterial Biofilm Growth on Various Dental Stabilization Systems for Avulsed and Luxated Teeth

    Get PDF
With the increased incidence of traumatic injuries and the advanced understanding of the periodontal and alveolar healing process, teeth splinting has become a common practice for stabilizing traumatized teeth. Consequently, several splinting materials and techniques have been introduced in the past few years. Despite the detrimental role of bacterial biofilm on healing, the level of biofilm development on these material surfaces has not been well investigated. Bacterial biofilms are severely detrimental for periodontal healing of avulsed and luxated teeth. Thus, biofilm growth becomes a critical factor in selecting the material of choice for dental splints. In this study, we aim to assess the level of oral biofilm growth on four different splinting systems: Ribbond©, orthodontic NiTi wire, monofilament fishing line, and Titanium Trauma Splint. A total of 72 extracted anterior teeth were divided into four groups. We splinted six rows of three teeth each per group. The teeth selected were caries-free and periodontitis-free at the time of extraction. To assess biofilm growth, a supragingival dental plaque sample was cultured and directly inoculated into all groups. After 7 days, bacterial growth was quantified by live/dead fluorescent microscopy assay and colony forming unit counts (CFU). Using one-way ANOVA and Bonferroni’s post hoc tests, we demonstrated that all splint systems allowed for bacterial growth. However, the Titanium Trauma Splint (TTS) allowed for the least amount of biofilm growth compared to other splint systems

Non-Surgical Therapy Reduces Presence of JP2 Clone in Localized Aggressive Periodontitis

Previous studies have provided substantial evidence on the association of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa), and its highly leukotoxic JP2 genotype, with localized aggressive periodontitis (LAP). The present study aims to evaluate the presence of JP2 in LAP individuals following periodontal treatment
