    Modernity at Large is a collection of essays (most of which are reprinted from other sources, e.g., Public Culture) that link the themes of modernity and globalization to contemporary everyday social practice, and to group individual identity construction and expression. Appadurai takes up the conditions of modernity which for him include science as a dominant ideology, obsession with technological development, colonial social relations, and the primacy of national communities. Weaving these conditions with issues of globalization, which he defines as instantaneous worldwide telecommunications (phone, fax, and internet), increased international or transnational migration, the expanding scope and impact of mass media, and the surge in global tourism

    Agronomic impacts of production scale harvesting of corn stover for cellulosic ethanol production in Central Iowa

    This thesis investigates the impacts of corn stover harvest in Central Iowa with regards to nutrient removal, grain yield impacts and soil tilth. Focusing on phosphorus and potassium removal due to production of large, square bales of corn stover, 3.7 lb P2O5 and 18.7 lb K2O per dry ton of corn stover were removed in 2011. P2O5 removal remained statistically the same in 2012, but K2O decreased to 15.1 lb per ton of dry corn stover. Grain cart data showed no statistical difference in grain yield between harvest treatments, but grain yield monitor data showed a 3 – 17 bu/ac increase in 2012 and hand samples showed a 4 – 21 bu/ac increase in 2013. Corn stover residue levels decreased below 30% coverage when corn stover was harvested the previous fall and conventional tillage methods were used, but incorporating reduced tillage practices following corn stover harvest increased residue levels back up to 30% coverage. Corn emergence rates increased by at least 2,470 more plants per acre within the first three days of spiking, but final populations between harvest and nonharvest corn stover treatments were the same. Inorganic soil nitrogen in the form of ammonium and nitrate were not directly impacted by corn stover harvest, but it is hypothesized that weather patterns had a greater impact on nitrogen availability. Lastly, soil organic matter did not statistically change from 2011 to 2013 due to corn stover removal, even when analyzed withing single soil types

    In the title compound, (C24H20P)2[Cr(CN)4(N)]·2H2O, the complex anion exhibits a square-based pyramidal geometry around the central CrV atom, which is coordinated by a nitride ligand in the apical position and by four cyanide ligands in the equatorial plane. The chromium atom is located 0.4493 (13) Å out of the plane formed by the ligating C atoms of the cyanide ligands. The water mol­ecules of crystallization form inter­molecular O—H⋯N hydrogen bonds to the N atoms of two cyanide ligands of neighbouring complex anions, forming an infinite hydrogen-bonded chain parallel to [011] of water mol­ecules and [Cr(N)(CN)4]2− anions. The terminal nitride ligands are not engaged in inter­molecular inter­actions

    Life cycle approach to sustainability assessment : a case study of remanufactured alternators

    Sustainability is an international issue with increasing concern and becomes a crucial driver for the industry in international competition. Sustainability encompasses the three dimensions: environment, society and economy. This paper presents the results from a sustainability assessment of a product. To prevent burden shifting, the whole life cycle of the products is necessary to be taken into account. For the environmental dimension, life cycle assessment (LCA) has been practiced for nearly 40 years and is the only one standardised by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) (14040 and 14044). Life cycle approaches for the social and economic dimensions are currently under development. Life cycle sustainability assessment (LCSA) is a complementary implementation of the three techniques: LCA (environmental), life cycle costing (LCC - economic) and social LCA (SLCA - social). This contribution applies the state-of-the-art LCSA on remanufacturing of alternators aiming at supporting managers and product developers in their decision-making to design product and plant. The alternator is the electricity generator in the automobile vehicle which produces the needed electricity. LCA and LCC are used to assess three different alternator design scenarios (namely conventional, lightweight and ultra-lightweight). The LCA and LCC results show that the conventional alternator is the most promising one. LCSA of three different locations (Germany, India and Sierra Leone) for setting the remanufacturing mini-factory, a worldwide applicable container, are investigated on all three different sustainability dimensions: LCA, LCC and SLCA. The location choice is determined by the SLCA and the design alternatives by the LCA and LCC. The case study results show that remanufacturing potentially causes about 12% of the emissions and costs compared to producing new parts. The conventional alternator with housing of iron cast performs better in LCA and LCC than the lightweight alternatives with aluminium housing. The optimal location of remanufacturing is dependent on where the used alternators are sourced and where the remanufactured alternators are going to be used. Important measures to improve the sustainability of the remanufacturing process in life cycle perspective are to confirm if the energy efficiency of the remanufactured part is better than the new part, as the use phase dominates from an environmental and economical point of view. The SLCA should be developed further, focusing on the suitable indicators and conducting further case studies including the whole life cycle

In complex situations like Mass Casualty Incidents it is hard to get a good situation report which is essential for proper decisions. The requirements on IT are manifold and the development of reliable systems with networked devices is difficult and long. Additionally the evaluation of a system or its components cannot be limited on tests in some training. This paper describes an evaluation of the communication layer within a prototypical rescue management system developed by the SpeedUp project. The evaluation is done with the help of a simulation where professional and technical aspects are taken into account. Different classical routing mechanisms are compared with an approach using mobile software agents

    How Practice Diffusion Drives IoT Technology Adoption and Institutionalization of Solutions in Service Ecosystems

    This paper proposes a framework for considering how practice diffusion drives the adoption of IoT technology and fuels institutionalization of solutions within service ecosystems. Practice diffusion requires the adaptation of a practice (using a wearable device) as it emerges across distinct sociocultural contexts. The adaptation of practices allows for the adoption of technology in different ways. New materials are linked with pre-existing meanings and competences as practices emerge and become embedded within a social structure. For IoT technologies, materials include a device and its associated digital data. Thus, practice adaptation requires linkages that enable the integration and use of both a device and data. We highlight a growing mental health crisis and the potential of wearable devices as medical aids, particularly for adolescents who spend much of their time connected to the internet. We consider important linkages to help institutionalize unique solutions for those in need
