Geodesic rays in the uniform infinite half-planar quadrangulation return to the boundary

We show that all geodesic rays in the uniform infinite half-planar quadrangulation (UIHPQ) intersect the boundary infinitely many times, answering thereby a recent question of Curien. However, the possible intersection points are sparsely distributed along the boundary. As an intermediate step, we show that geodesic rays in the UIHPQ are proper, a fact that was recently established by Caraceni and Curien (2015) by a reasoning different from ours. Finally, we argue that geodesic rays in the uniform infinite half-planar triangulation behave in a very similar manner, even in a strong quantitative sense.Comment: 29 pages, 13 figures. Improving Cal Poly Space Systems Infrastructure

The goal of this project was to increase the usable space for the club Cal Poly Space Systems to work on its projects, improve the safety for its members, and reduce the time it takes to manufacture its products. The project demonstrated the effectiveness of 5S in improving a workspace. Club members were measurably more comfortable in the work environment and spent less time looking for tools. Current rooms were made more professional by ridding the workplace of non-valued items and finding sensible locations for high-traffic items. Additional rooms were added and they should indisputably support club projects the upcoming year. Workspace safety was improved by building a railing to block off a dangerous balcony, and by hanging exit and fire safety signs. Workspace performance was enhanced by installing a high pressure air line for the club to use pneumatic tools. With minimal budget and star results, the project was a true success

Behavioral approach and fear moderates the relationship between insensitive/intrusive parenting and early language development

Early language development has been implicated in a variety of other critical developmental outcomes making it important to understand contributors to the emergence of early language. Although still understudied, there is increasing recognition that children’s temperament and early parenting may be important factors in the emergence of early language. To add to this growing body of work, in the current investigation, two aspects of temperament, infant fearfulness, underpinned by the behavioral inhibition system, and approach, underpinned by the behavioral activation system (Schwartz et al., 1999), were examined in relation to language when children were 14 months of age. In addition, mother’s tendency to employ intrusive/insensitive parenting behaviors during play was examined as a contributor to child language, and was also examined in relation to child language in interaction with child behavioral inhibition and behavioral approach. The behavioral inhibition system (BIS) is the biopsychological system responsible for influencing an individual to withdraw from novel stimuli or situations. Based on prior work, it was expected that fear negatively, and approach positively associated with language. It also was expected that intrusive/insensitive parenting would be negatively related with child language. Although exploratory in nature, it was tentatively anticipated that stronger relations between intrusive/insensitive parenting and language would be observed for children high in fear, and high in approach (i.e., that intrusive/insensitive parenting would inhibit language in high approach children)

    Process layout to group layout

Includes bibliographical references.Currently the job/batch production in Libertyville, IL has a dilemma with cell phones disappearing during production runs. In my fa112003 case study, Evaluation of Motorola's Relocation, I showed that an improved process layout did not improve the manufacturing department's efficiency enough to validate implementing that improvement. With the goal to recommend an improvement to the current process, while eliminating the disappearing radio dilemma, I am altering the layout of the manufacturing department from a process layout to a group layout. One of the key elements in this procedure was to keep the flexibility of this imposed layout equal to that of the current layout, because the production levels in Libertyville are of batch style. The group layout was incorporated to increase the productivity of the proposed layout and to reduce the risk of disappearing phones, by reducing material handling. The decision making process in this consulting project was decision analysis with emphasis in determining the indifference benefit necessary to implement the process layout alternative. The indifference benefit is an original concept based off ofthe decision analysis concept of indifferences.B.S. (Bachelor of Science

Dual back-stepping observer to anticipate the rollover risk in under/over-steering situations. Application to ATVs in off-road context

    Get PDF
International audienceIn this paper an ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle) rollover prevention system is proposed. It is based on the online estimation and prediction of the Lateral Load Transfer (LLT), allowing the evaluation of dynamic instabilities. Using a vehicle model based on two 2D representations, the LLT can be estimated and predicted. As we consider off road vehicle, grip conditions must be encountered and are here estimated thanks to observation theory. Nevertheless, two main behaviours (over/under-steering) may be encountered pending on grip, and vehicle configuration. Because of the low cost sensor, these two opposite dynamics cannot be explicitly discriminated. As a result, two observers are used according to the vehicle behaviour. Based on a bicycle model and a low cost perception system, they estimate on-line the terrain properties (grip conditions, global sideslip angle and bank angle). A "supervisor" selects on-line the right observer. Associated to a predictive control algorithm, based on the extrapolation of rider's action and the selected estimated dynamical state, the risk can be anticipated, enabling to warn the pilot and to consider the implementation of active actions. Simulations and full-scale experimentations are presented to discuss about the efficiency of the proposed solution

Rollover prevention system dedicated to ATVs on natural ground

In this paper, an algorithm dedicated to light ATVs, which estimates and anticipates the rollover, is proposed. It is based on the on-line estimation of the Lateral Load Transfer (LLT), allowing the evaluation of dynamic instabilities. The LLT is computed thanks to a dynamical model split into two 2D projections. Relying on this representation and a low cost perception system, an observer is proposed to estimate on-line the terrain properties (grip conditions and slope), then allowing to deduce accurately the risk of instability. Associated to a predictive control algorithm, based on the extrapolation of riders action, the risk can be anticipated, enabling to warn the pilot and to consider the implementation of active actions
