ORWINE: towards a European regulation for organic wine-making

    Get PDF
The project aims at solving the legislative problem of the lack of EU regulation on organic wine-making by producing a scientific data set to support the EU commission to develop the legislative framework. Data about currently applied practices, consumer and market needs in significant areas were gathered in all significant wine producing areas of EU and some new member states. Test series with suitable and innovative technologies to improve the quality of wines from organic viticulture, allowing using a low level of sulphites are conducted and validated on selected pilot wineries. Moreover the results and regulatory proposals are discussed with a participatory approach with stakeholders on national levels as well as on European level, ensuring a high acceptance of the proposed legislative framework. Besides a code of best practices as well as a simplified environment assessment tool will be developed to give guidance to produce high quality wine while limiting the impact on the environment

In this thesis we consider the geometry of the Hilbert scheme of points in P^n, concentrating on the locus of points corresponding to the Gorenstein subschemes of P^n. New results are given, most importantly we provide tools for constructing flat families and analysis of finite Gorenstein algebras and expose their efficiency by proving smoothability of certain families of algebras. Much of the existing theory and folklore is reviewed, providing a micro-encyclopaedic reference.Comment: v2: some minor corrections made. 29 pages. Congestive Heart Failure: The Danger of Medical Jargon

    Get PDF
Congestive heart failure (CHF) has shifted from a terminal diagnosis to a chronic disease. However, the nomenclature, specifically the inclusion of the term “failure”, leads patients to believe that the diagnosis is lethal and thus can cause anxiety and depression. Several cardiology foundations have called for a nomenclature change based on wide variations in pathophysiology of the disease and also on patient perceptions of the terminology (Patel et al. 2018; Stocker et al. 2017; Rogers et al. 2000; Tayler and Ogden 2005; Lehman et al. 2005). The purpose of this study was to gain further understanding of lay people’s perception of the disease congestive heart failure. Free listing interviews were conducted with 100 community members who were asked to list all thoughts and feelings regarding the term “congestive heart failure” and three other medical diagnoses. Data were cleaned and salience was derived using Smith’s S defined as: S = ((L − Rj + 1)/L)/N, where L is the length of each list, Rj is the rank of item J in the list, and N is the number of lists in the sample. Despite the fact that CHF, like high blood pressure or diabetes, is not a death sentence, terms like death, severe, and fear proved to be most salient when respondents were asked to reflect on CHF . Contrasted to this were diet, treatment, and family history which were among the salient terms collected when respondents reflected on diabetes or high blood pressure. Even though providers can help people process the diagnosis and defuse their immediate concerns, this study documents the impact language has on lay members of the community and supports a need for public health and healthcare professionals to address common perceptions of language

Marine Pollution Prevention in American Samoa

Most of the garbage in American Samoa heads to the landfill in Futiga on the island of Tutuila. Reports indicate that the landfill is expected to reach critical capacity in 2015. Some have started to look into advanced technology to deal with the problem, which could lead to millions of dollars of government spending. Our study focuses on how to reduce solid waste through composting, a natural way to recycle organic or biodegradable waste. Composting is a great option to look into since about fifty percent of waste sent to the landfill is biodegradable and because it is easily done with little or no cost and is beneficial to the environment. This study is divided into two parts. First, research will be done through the internet, interviews will be conducted with experts, and a survey will be done to determine the composting methods done on island, awareness of the current landfill situation, awareness on composting and if it is conducted at home, and if those surveyed agree that composting would be beneficial for proper solid waste management in American Samoa. Second, a simple method of composting will be created to share with the public so that everyone may have the opportunity to begin his or her own compost pile. Preliminary data shows that 62% of the people know about the landfill capacity problem, 68% know what composting is, and 33% of households conduct their own composting. Approximately 76% of the people surveyed practice the 3Rs: reuse, reduce, and recycle. This study shows that composting is a practical means for reducing waste in American Samoa

Perceptions of pregnant women about influenza vaccine: What do we know?

Seasonal influenza is a highly contagious disease which can lead to complications such as exacerbation of chronic conditions, hospitalization and even death. Influenza is particularly dangerous when it strikes those who are immunosuppressed, elderly, very young (children \u3c 6 months old) or pregnant. Vaccination is recommended for everyone and especially for these vulnerable populations. Despite recommendations, vaccine uptake is lower than recommended with only 53.6% of pregnant women reporting vaccination. A systematic review on this topic was performed by Yuen et al. in 2014. A rapid systematic review was conducted to update Yuen’s findings and shed light on which factors play a role in flu vaccine decision making for pregnant women. The review resulted in the identification of eleven papers published between 2014 and 2019. Data extraction was informed by the Health belief Model (HBM). Results were organized into 5 categories--perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived barriers and cues to action, all elements of the HBM. Results showed that women who perceived risk as “high”, had higher knowledge about disease, wanted to protect their babies and themselves from the disease, received a provider recommendation, along with an opportunity to receive the vaccine at the time of an office visit were more likely to be vaccinated. Unvaccinated women had more perceived barriers, such as lower knowledge, had concerns about safety of vaccine and perceived risk as low. Based on the findings, cues to action impacted vaccination status the most. To increase influenza vaccine uptake by pregnant women, health care providers need to recommend vaccination and offer it at the time of an office visit, additionally, providers need to provide education about vaccine safety, effectiveness and risks of the disease

The impact of natural and socio-economic conditions change the speech of the Albanian language (case of Albania)

Over the centuries languages creates its own features, such as grammatical structure, phonetics and vocabulary. These elements contain the Albanian language, which ranks among the oldest in Europe. Language, especially spoken language varies not only between nations but also within its own. In the Albanian language there are observed differences between provinces without changing its base, forming dialects. Determinant factors are the natural and socio-economic conditions. Natural conditions (first), especially the relief forms a significant influence on the formation of dialects. Albanian relief is predominantly mountainous, with high mountain ranges, which makes difficult people contacts, causing a relative isolation. This did that the inhabitants of a region with the time pass by speak an Albanian, which has differences with the other provinces. There are seen differences between the speech of Elbasan with that of Lushnjë, etc. The socio-economic poor state of the Albanian succeeded over the years an underdeveloped road and rail infrastructure, while hindering not the less the movement of people from one region to another, especially in mountainous areas. Even loë income did not alloë frequent movement of people and their good education, etc. These factors hinder the ongoing communication of the inhabitants of different regions. The presentation will be illustrated examples of words from several dialects, where accent makes differences in relation to the standard language

    Global financial crisis

The most recent developments in economy are a clear indicator of many changes, which are a result of this high rate pacing, which also demonstrates as such. Market economy processes occur as a result of intertwining of many potential technological and human factors, thereby creating a system of numerous diver-gences and turbulences. Economics, a social science, is characteri-sed with movements from a system to another system, and is har-monized with elements or components which have impacted the development and application of economic policies as a result. This example can be illustrated with the passing from a commanded system (centralized) to a self-governing (decentrali-zed) system, while the movement from a system to another is known as transi-tion. Such transition in its own nature bears a number of problems of almost any kind (political, economic, social, etc.), and is charac-terised with differences from a country to another.Financial crisis is a phenomenon consisting of a perception of economic policies and creation of an economic and financial stabi-lity in regional and global structures. From this, one may assume that each system has its own changes in its nature, and as a result of these changes, we have the crisis of such a system. Even in the economic field, if we look closely, we have such a problem, where development trends both in human and technological fields have created a large gap between older times and today, thereby crea-ting dynamics with a high intensity of action. If we dwell on the problem, and enter into the financial world, we can see that the so-called industrialized countries have made giant leaps in deve-lopment, while countries in transition have stalled in many fields, as a result of a high rate of corruption and unemployment in these countries, and obviously these indicators are directly connected, thereby stroking the financial system in these countries.Corruption is an element, which directly and indirectly influences the pro-cess of attracting foreign investment, and further influencing the growth of unemployment, and in turn expanding the financial crisis, where finances are already fragile. In the following sections, we will elaborate on the financial crisis in a global aspect, the impacts of this crisis in economic development, and the role of stock exchange in finance, thereby creating a multi-dimensional horizon of the problem
