TEAM: a parameter-free algorithm to teach collaborative robots motions from user demonstrations
Learning from demonstrations (LfD) enables humans to easily teach
collaborative robots (cobots) new motions that can be generalized to new task
configurations without retraining. However, state-of-the-art LfD methods
require manually tuning intrinsic parameters and have rarely been used in
industrial contexts without experts. We propose a parameter-free LfD method
based on probabilistic movement primitives, where parameters are determined
using Jensen-Shannon divergence and Bayesian optimization, and users do not
have to perform manual parameter tuning. The cobot's precision in reproducing
learned motions, and its ease of teaching and use by non-expert users are
evaluated in two field tests. In the first field test, the cobot works on
elevator door maintenance. In the second test, three factory workers teach the
cobot tasks useful for their daily workflow. Errors between the cobot and
target joint angles are insignificant -- at worst 0.28 deg -- and the motion is
accurately reproduced -- GMCC score of 1. Questionnaires completed by the
workers highlighted the method's ease of use and the accuracy of the reproduced
motion. Public implementation of our method and datasets are made available
online.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, accepted to ICINCO202
Periods of weed interference on bean crop with cultivars plants different architecture types
Bean plants with growth types and plant architecture that facilitate cultural practices and high productivity, have been an important requirement for farmers. However, overcoming competition with weeds becomes a limiting factor. This research was conducted to determine the period prior to interference (PPI) on bean cultivars of different types plant growth with an arbitrary level of 2.5%, 5% and 10% productivity loss. The experimental treatments consisted of eight coexistence periods of the crop and weeds: 0-10, 0-20, 0-30, 0-40, 0-50, 0-60, 0-70, 0-harvest days after emergence and a control plot that was kept weed-free throughout the study period. The experimental design was a random block design with four replications. The periods prior to interference were 21, 30 and 35 days for the BRS Pontal bean cultivar and 0, 5 and 12 days for the IPR Juriti cultivar, with the arbitrary levels of reduction of productivity of 2,5%, 5% and 10%, respectively, living with the infesting community composed predominantly of the species Digitaria sp., Portulaca oleraceae, and Eleusine indica. The architecture of the bean plant is of paramount importance in the choice of the farmer. However, 35 DAE of the bean plants, weed control must be do

The Case for Gay and Lesbian Marriage
"Courts and legislatures grant a heterosexual couple the legal right to marry. (Krause 37) Why has this legal right not been extended to include gay and lesbian couples? The legal definition of family has no doubt broadened... Even the legal substitutes for marriage, common-law marriage and marriage by contract or declaration, have been denied to gay and lesbian couples, while available under some jurisdictions to heterosexual couples.
Is this prohibition of same-sex marriage constitutionally justifiable? Are the proposed interests of states in prohibiting same-sex marriage justifiable by the standards of constitutional law? These two questions will structure the course of the argument to follow in favor of legitimizing gay and lesbian marriage."--from pages 26-2
Brain-derived neurotrophic factor serum levels and hippocampal volume in mild cognitive impairment and dementia due to Alzheimer disease
Background/Aims: Hippocampal atrophy is a recognized biomarker of Alzheimer disease (AD) pathology. Serum brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) reduction has been associated with neurodegeneration. We aimed to evaluate BDNF serum levels and hippocampal volume in clinical AD (dementia and mild cognitive impairment [MCI]). Methods: Participants were 10 patients with MCI and 13 with dementia due to AD as well as 10 healthy controls. BDNF serum levels were determined by ELISA and volumetric measures with NeuroQuant ® . Results: MCI and dementia patients presented lower BDNF serum levels than healthy participants; dementia patients presented a smaller hippocampal volume than MCI patients and healthy participants. Discussion: The findings support that the decrease in BDNF might start before the establishment of neuronal injury expressed by the hippocampal reduction
