Thermal description of particle production in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions

    Get PDF
The grand-canonical version of the thermal model is used to analyze the ratios of particle abundances measured in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Exactly the same model is applied to study the heavy-ion reactions at BNL AGS, CERN SPS, and BNL RHIC. A very good description is achieved for Pb+Pb collisions at SPS, and for Au+Au collisions at RHIC. In these two cases the value of the temperature characterizing the chemical freeze-out is practically same: T=168 MeV at SPS and T=165 MeV at RHIC. On the other hand, the particle ratios measured in the collisions of lighter nuclei are described only in the qualitative way. We discuss also the effect of the possible in-medium modifications of hadron masses and widths on the thermal fits. For Pb+Pb collisions at SPS and Au+Au collisions at RHIC we find that the chi^2 fits favor slightly a moderate (20%) decrease of the masses. In-medium modifications of the widths have little effect on the fits, unless they are increased by a factor larger than 2. We study in detail the thermodynamic conditions characterizing the chemical freeze-out. In particular, we find that the average baryon energy is 1.6 GeV and the average meson energy is 0.9 GeV. This difference reflects a different behavior of the mass spectra of mesons and baryons.Comment: PhD Thesis, 61 page

Exploring and Evaluating Interprofessional Training: A Brief Overview

    Get PDF
This paper provides a general overview of an upcoming evaluation plan with JCIPE that began this fall. This plan was constructed primarily because although numerous training institutions have constructed and implemented various courses and programs designed to provide students with extensive learning opportunities steeped in interprofessional education (IPE)1-3, projects employing longitudinal and/or mixed-methods approaches to understanding the multi-faceted barriers to and facilitators of IPE within health professions training have been quite limited. Similarly, few evaluation plans have attempted to unearth if and how students are exposed to interprofessional values outside of IPE-specific programs or how these team-based values may translate to students’ later professional practice

Adhesive Bonding of Aluminium Alloy A5754 by Epoxy Resins

Joining thin sheets of aluminium and its alloys is a promising area in the field of joining materials. Nowadays, joining methods that do not melt the material itself are increasingly being utilised. This paper deals with adhesive bonding of aluminium alloy A5754 by two-component epoxy resins. Theresults show that joints bonded by Hysol 9466 have appropriate mechanical properties, but that joints bonded by Hysol 9492 have better thermal stability

Expanding the Landscape of Wholeness: The Spirituality of Teacher Preparation. A Response to Reconstituting Teacher Education: Toward Wholeness in an Era of Monumental Challenges

    Get PDF
This article is a response to a paper arguing for a shift from “oneness” to “wholeness” as a democratic principle when reconceptualizing teacher education in a time of large-scale social change. While the paper provides compelling arguments for wholeness as a tool to address social injustice, the discussion is framed primarily through a humanist lens. This response is an invitation to expand the definition of wholeness to include spirituality as core to what it means to be human and whole. It addresses the importance of spirituality in teacher education when considering culturally responsive pedagogy, the religion-spirit distinction, the source of the call to teach, and the outer-technical and inner-heart paradox of teaching. Examples from educators combining spirituality and social justice are explored

The Classified Information Protection Act: Killing the Messenger or Killing the Message

The purpose of this Note is to discuss the adequacy of existing statutory and administrative protections for classified information, examine how the agencies responsible for protecting this information implemented controls, and how the courts interpreted these existing protections. This Note argues that the failure of the government to prevent leaks is not necessarily a failure of the existing scheme, but rather a failure of the government to apply current controls. Furthermore, it demonstrates that the Classified Information Protection Act is an unnecessary, overbroad, and in some cases, ineffective alternative to the existing protections, with a great potential for abuse. If the bill is passed, it would undoubtedly serve to chill important debate on matters of public interest. Finally, this article will mention some possible alternatives to the bill, which could be implemented to protect the government\u27s legitimate need for secrecy while balancing the First Amendment rights of government employees and the press
