GENDER, CORRUPTION AND SUSTAINABLE GROWTH IN TRANSITION COUNTRIES

    Get PDF
Numerous studies have found negative connection between corruption level and economic development. At the same time few of them demonstrate correlation between women representation in politics and corruption level. This paper analyzes correlation between gender and corruption for a specific sample of countries, sharing common cultural and historical legacy transition countries. Relationship between higher number of women in parliament and decreasing level of corruption is supported by data. Relations with other forms of women social activity were found to be insignificant. Contribution of this paper to the research literature on this topic is twofold. First analysis on gender and corruption in transition economies has previously not been done. Second, this study could also be used for the practical policies on fighting corruption by application of gender quotas.gender, corruption, growth, transition countries

Overconfidence, Risk Aversion and Individual Financial Decisions in Experimental Asset Markets

    Get PDF
We investigate the influence of overconfidence and risk aversion on individual financial decision making in the experimental asset markets of the Smith, Suchanek and Williams (1988) type, with no informational asymmetries. Subjects, based on their pre-experimental overconfidence scores, were assigned to the two types of markets: least overconfident subjects formed five “rational” markets and most overconfident subjects formed five “overconfident” markets. The asset market experiment was followed by post hoc risk aversion measurement. Our results revealed that in the suggested setting, performance and trading activity were overconfidence dependent only for female participants. Mistakes in price forecasting, that are negatively correlated with overconfidence, could partially account for the increase in trading activity and losses. In the decreased sample differences in individual outcomes were overconfidence and not risk aversion driven

On the karyology and morphology of Chironomus jonmartini Lindeberg (Diptera, Chironomidae)

    Get PDF
A detailed description of the karyotype of Chironomus jonmartini Lindeberg as well as data for its polymorphism are presented. The polymorphism is realized by heterozygous inversions and a high percentage of additional "B", chromosomes. Males, females, pupae and larvae are also redescribed. C. jonmartini is compared morphologically with a karyologically unidentified species of the genus Chironomus, the males of which are to a certain extent similar to it

How host organizations prepare for and learn from expatriate assignments

© 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article reveals what goes on inside host organizations prior to and during expatriate assignments. On the basis of analyzing organizational documents and conducting 43 interviews with host country nationals (HCNs) and expatriates in 30 Vietnamese organizations that host external foreign assignments, we provide a detailed account of HCNs' experiences and unearth sophisticated preparation and management activities designed to maximize these organizations' learning. We depict what we call “a host organization lifecycle” and extract five lessons: (a) host organizations prepare carefully in advance to learn as much as possible from expatriates; (b) HCNs experience quite dramatic adjustments and burdens during expatriates' placements; (c) mutual trust between expatriates and HCNs is a prerequisite for HCNs' learning; (d) most of HCNs' learning occurs informally via interactions with expatriates or observing how they work; (e) host organization managers actively manage HCN–expatriate relationships. Our findings outline a “wish list” of practices that expatriate-using organizations could consider deploying for expatriate assignments that focus on the benefit of the host organization' development

The karyotype, morphology and ecology of Glyptotendipes aequalis Kieffer (Diptera, Chironomidae)

    Get PDF
The karyotype, morphology of adult, pupae and larvae, and the ecology of Glyptotendipes aequalis Kieffer (1922) are described from material from Finland, and a neotype from the (probably) original German material is designated. 2n = 8. Ist, IInd and IIIrd chromosomes are metacentric, IVth acrocentric. The IVth chromosome has a nucleolus and a Balbiani ring. G. aequalis is karyologically closely related to G. caulicola, differing by a simple inversion step

The karyotype and morphology of Chironomus brevidentatus sp. n. (Dipt., Chironomidae). A species with a "salinarius type" larva from northern Finland

    Get PDF
The karyotype and morphology of Chironomus brevidentatus sp. n. has been described from the Lokka reservoir in northern Finland. The species belongs to the thummi complex with the chromosome arm combination AB, CD, EF and G. The relationships between the karyotypes of C.brevidentatus, C. major Wülker & Butler, C. neocorax Wülker and Butler, C. tardus Butler, and "Chironomus sp. 2n = 6, Lokka" are described. The external morphology has been compared with the suggested nearest relatives or otherwise similar species. The known ecological conditions in the type locality are discussed
