Scientifically, globalization is a pure-form or model that refers to a condition whereby a dominant state unilaterally or multilaterally maintains a balance of power to fail member states in the international system it dominates. Globalization can be implemented exclusively or inclusively under blocs (regional) or International Governmental Organizations (IGOs) as means of the balance of power for the failure of states. This is the theme that this article pursues to objectively examine the current globalization regime as the function of two arms of the balance of power applied to fail states in the international system. One arm of the current globalization regime applies interest-lending of the Bretton Woods institutions namely, International Bank for Reconstruction (IBRD)/World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF). The other arm uses the strategy of resource wars. The problem is that interest charges of the World Bank and IMF have failed to cause real domestic growth in 185 states since the initial Ten/Five-year Development Plans, 1946/51-56. This is seen in the domestic and foreign debt burdens arising out of loan interests of the IBRD/World Bank and IMF. There have been more than 136 resource wars that have caused over 250 million deaths (market value loss of over USD 500 trillion) in the period 1946 to date. The unit of analysis of the paper is that the previous and current strategies of globalization have been illegitimate, severely violated fundamental human right, contravened business ethics and caused the failure states. Thus, the Bretton Woods system has not, and will not as it stands, benefit USA and her allied member states and the Third World inclusive. Legally and morally, Latin American states who signed the Bretton Woods Agreements in 1944 were not in-due-form: African, Asian and Eastern European states were not represented; and given the most compelling fact that others from Europe (e.g. Germany) and Japan agreed in the unique historical moment, the logical conclusion is that the liberty and fundamental freedoms and rights of member states have since been violated by the IBRD/World Bank and IMF interest-lending. (i) The paper recommends among others a new formula for the re-creation a humanistic international monetary authority that will benefit all stakeholders without interfering in the balance of power. To say the least, interest lending of the Bretton Woods systems was appropriated from the 1545 Act ("An Acte Agaynst Usurie", 37 H.viii 9), which must be replaced with the humanistic monetary formula that maintains the balance of power to the lender, and also agreeable with international business ethics and human rights. (ii) This will multiply earnings of the world bank group to over 150 %. (iii) Over 3 billion out of the 6,8 billion people who had abandoned or feared interest-lending of commercial banks will join the industry - hence pulling over 150 % earnings. (iv) Employment will increase to more than 60 %. (v) Inflation will fall to 3 %. (vi) Local and investor confidence will rise, hence enlarging the financial market. (vii) There is urgent need for creating new geographies of the peace by closing Western driven ethnic battle frontlines that emerged with Huntington's new pattern of conflict (1990s to date).globalisation, Africa, Bretton Woods system, international organisations

The dissertation consists of four separate studies that have focused on different aspects of the relationship between the management of sports related injuries and utilisation of best practices before sports, during sports and after sports-related injuries. Background: Participation in sports has an associated risk of injury which is defined by the type of sport and level of participation. Any injury affects the athletesā€˜ health status. To mitigate this risk, international sporting organizations provide guidelines, and mandates the proper evaluation and care for athletes before, during and after training or participation in competition. Despite the availability of guidelines describing best medical care practices for managing athletes, inappropriate management practices are reported globally. The barriers to best medical practice vary. While these barriers have been investigated in a variety of sports in developed countries, similar investigations have not been extensively conducted in developing countries, where the demands are different. Therefore, the overall aim of this thesis was to explore barriers to best medical practices in a variety of sports in Uganda. Methodology: The research was conducted as four studies. The first study used a descriptive case study approach. The data were collected on a sample of injured athletes (n=75) from four sports in Uganda (football/soccer, athletics, basketball and rugby) to describe the medical care practices of the sports resource providers. The current prevention, emergency care, intermediate treatment, rehabilitation services and return-to-sports strategies were all documented in a period of six months. The gaps in best practices were observed, and further investigated in the next three studies. Firstly, a validated questionnaire was used to establish the level of knowledge and practices of various components/themes of athletesā€˜ well-being and best practices among the stakeholders. Secondly, the current standards of the sports arenas and medical and high-performance facilities were examined using a validated checklist. The last study was a semi-structured interview which assessed the available national health care policies to support sports best practice strategies in Uganda Findings: The overall results of the first study showed there was a significant lack of compliance to best medical care practices in all the phases of athletesā€˜ health care. The barriers to best practice were confirmed as: (i) the lack of adequate knowledge and awareness on various best practice strategies, (ii) the sports and health facilities were below the required standards and, (iii) there were no national health sports care policies to support and facilitate the implementation of best practices in Uganda. Conclusion: (i) A holistic approach may be required to address the best medical care practice barriers in Uganda to improve on the health and safety of athletes. (ii) The knowledge of stakeholders should be improved and awareness created about best medical practices in sports in Uganda. (iii) There is a critical need to develop a national sports health care policy. (iv) The facilities for sports and health care of athletes urgently need improvement and supported

    Visualization of yeast chromosomal DNA

The DNA molecule is the most significant life molecule since it codes the blue print for other structural and functional molecules of all living organisms. Agarose gel electrophoresis is now being widely used to separate DNA of virus, bacteria, and lower eukaryotes. The task was undertaken of reviewing the existing methods of DNA fractionation and microscopic visualization of individual chromosonal DNA molecules by gel electrophoresis as a basis for a proposed study to investigate the feasibility of separating DNA molecules in free fluids as an alternative to gel electrophoresis. Various techniques were studied. On the molecular level, agarose gel electrophoresis is being widely used to separate chromosomal DNA according to molecular weight. Carl and Olson separate and characterized the entire karyotype of a lab strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Smith et al. and Schwartz and Koval independently reported the visualization of individual DNA molecules migrating through agarose gel matrix during electrophoresis. The techniques used by these researchers are being reviewed in the lab as a basis for the proposed studies

Visualization of DNA molecules in time during electrophoresis

For several years individual DNA molecules have been observed and photographed during agarose gel electrophoresis. The DNA molecule is clearly the largest molecule known. Nevertheless, the largest molecule is still too small to be seen using a microscope. A technique developed by Morikawa and Yanagida has made it possible to visualize individual DNA molecules. When these long molecules are labeled with appropriate fluorescence dyes and observed under a fluorescence microscope, although it is not possible to directly visualize the local ultrastructure of the molecules, yet because they are long light emitting chains, their microscopic dynamical behavior can be observed. This visualization works in the same principle that enables one to observe a star through a telescope because it emits light against a dark background. The dynamics of individual DNA molecules migrating through agarose matrix during electrophoresis have been described by Smith et al. (1989), Schwartz and Koval (1989), and Bustamante et al. (1990). DNA molecules during agarose gel electrophoresis advance lengthwise thorough the gel in an extended configuration. They display an extension-contraction motion and tend to bunch up in their leading ends as the 'heads' find new pores through the gel. From time to time they get hooked on obstacles in the gel to form U-shaped configurations before they resume their linear configuration

Couple Beads: An integrated Method of Natural Family Planning

    Get PDF
Various fertility indicators are used by natural family planning methods to identify the fertile and infertile phases of a woman\u27s menstrual cycle: mucus observations, cycle-day probabilities, basal body temperature readings, and hormonal measures of LH and estrogen. Simplified NFP methods generally make use of a single fertility indicator such as cycle-day probabilities (Standard Days Method) or mucus observations (Billings Ovulation Method). The Couple Bead Method integrates the two simplest fertility indicators, cycle-day probabilities and mucus observations, expanding its applicability to all women, regardless of cycle regularity and length. In determining cycle-day probabilities, the Couple Bead Method relies on a new data set from ultrasound-derived determinants of gestational age that more directly define the day of conception and the fertile window. By using a visual-based system of inexpensive colored beads, the Couple Bead Method can be used by couples of all educational and income levels
