Immunotherapy with Allergen Peptides

<p/> <p>Specific allergen immunotherapy (SIT) is disease-modifying and efficacious. However, the use of whole allergen preparations is associated with frequent allergic adverse events during treatment. Many novel approaches are being designed to reduce the allergenicity of immunotherapy preparations whilst maintaining immunogenicity. One approach is the use of short synthetic peptides which representing dominant T cell epitopes of the allergen. Short peptides exhibit markedly reduced capacity to cross link IgE and activate mast cells and basophils, due to lack of tertiary structure. Murine pre-clinical studies have established the feasibility of this approach and clinical studies are currently in progress in both allergic and autoimmune diseases.</p

L’actualité brûlante du Soudan nous incite plutôt à regarder aujourd’hui vers les frontières tchadienne, libyenne ou centrafricaine. Et pourtant, il faut considérer que ce pays est également tourné vers l’Érythrée, l’Éthiopie, et qu’il possède une façade maritime sur la mer Rouge. Cela n’en fait pas pour autant, d’un point de vue strictement géographique, un pays de la Corne de l’Afrique. On peut se demander néanmoins si certaines de ses problématiques ne conduisent pas à l’intégrer, par capillarité, à cette région. C’est en tout cas une approche extensive que l’International Crisis Group semble valider et que nous sommes tentés de faire nôtre à la lumière du conflit oublié des Beja, dans l’est du Soudan

Brèves réflexions sur la qualification de l’alerte éthique comme droit de l’homme

Alors que les lanceurs d’alerte s’imposent de plus en plus sur la scène médiatique, les débats sur le régime juridique dont ils font et doivent faire l’objet s’intensifient. Pourtant, avant même de revendiquer une quelconque protection légale, conventionnelle ou constitutionnelle de l’alerte, il conviendrait au préalable de la qualifier. Saisi par le droit interne et certains instruments internationaux, le mécanisme de l’alerte n’est pas explicitement présenté comme un droit de l’homme. L’ambiguïté textuelle, doublée de la nature particulière de l’alerte, place cette dernière au carrefour d’une multitude de qualifications possibles : elle peut à la fois être envisagée comme une obligation, un contre-pouvoir, un devoir et un droit. Face à ces hésitations sémantiques, il convient pourtant de déceler dans le mécanisme de l’alerte les caractéristiques d’un droit subjectif nouveau et singulier, reflet d’une revendication moderne. Attachée à la nature de l’homme et construite dans le prolongement de certains droits fondamentaux, l’alerte est également entachée d’une dimension universelle et évolutive qui permettent de la qualifier de droit de l’homme par ricochet. Yet this practice has all the characteristics of a human right, and more precisely, a “right by extension” which aims to protect fundamental rights, the rule of law in a democratic society and good governance. Advances in the numerical treatment of grain-boundary migration: Coupling with mass transport and mechanics

This work is based upon a coupled, lattice-based continuum formulation that was previously applied to problems involving strong coupling between mechanics and mass transport; e.g. diffusional creep and electromigration. Here we discuss an enhancement of this formulation to account for migrating grain boundaries. The level set method is used to model grain-boundary migration in an Eulerian framework where a grain boundary is represented as the zero level set of an evolving higher-dimensional function. This approach can easily be generalized to model other problems involving migrating interfaces; e.g. void evolution and free-surface morphology evolution. The level-set equation is recast in a remarkably simple form which obviates the need for spatial stabilization techniques. This simplified level-set formulation makes use of velocity extension and field re-initialization techniques. In addition, a least-squares smoothing technique is used to compute the local curvature of a grain boundary directly from the level-set field without resorting to higher-order interpolation. A notable feature is that the coupling between mass transport, mechanics and grain-boundary migration is fully accounted for. Multi-Phase Equilibrium of Crystalline Solids

A continuum model of crystalline solid equilibrium is presented in which the underlying periodic lattice structure is taken explicitly into account. This model also allows for both point and line defects in the bulk of the lattice and at interfaces, and the kinematics of such defects is discussed in some detail. A Gibbsian variational argument is used to derive the necessary bulk and interfacial conditions for multi-phase equilibrium (crystal-crystal and crystal-melt) where the allowed lattice variations involve the creation and transport of defects in the bulk and at the phase interface. An interfacial energy, assumed to depend on the interfacial dislocation density and the orientation of the interface with respect to the lattices of both phases, is also included in the analysis. Previous equilibrium results based on nonlinear elastic models for incoherent and coherent interfaces are recovered as special cases for when the lattice distortion is constrained to coincide with the macroscopic deformation gradient, thereby excluding bulk dislocations. The formulation is purely spatial and needs no recourse to a fixed reference configuration or an elastic-plastic decomposition of the strain. Such a decomposition can be introduced however through an incremental elastic deformation superposed onto an already dislocated state, but leads to additional equilibrium conditions. The presentation emphasizes the role of {configurational forces} as they provide a natural framework for the description and interpretation of singularities and phase transitions.Comment: 32 pages, to appear in Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solid
