Mining Companies and CSR in Guinea: Use the U.N. Global Compact Model to Improve Lives

    Get PDF
Mining Companies tend to exploit natural resources in developing countries such as Guinea, to the detriment of the local population (Amaeshi, Adi, Ogbechie,& Amao,2007); (Kefee, 2013); (Hamann, 2003). Government officials in such countries often do not work in the better interests of the citizens due to corruption and other factors (Ayoade, 2011); (Kefee, 2013); (Susson, 2012). In this study the writer presents library-research material on the social, economic, and environmental impact of selective mining companies in Guinea, and the complexities introduced by the actions of local government officials. The writer presents recommendations for improving the interests of the natives of Guinea based on the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) model of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC)

    Active Debris Removal Mapping Project

Space debris discussions initiated with the start of the space age 55 years ago and have seen special interest in current years. This is due to the large increase in the number of space debris which has led to an increased threat of collision with operational space systems and of unsafe reentry. Due to this increased interest in this area, many different methods have been proposed in recent years for mitigation and space debris removal, some of which have even secured funding from space agencies for further development. These include ground based lasers and space based systems which use electro-dynamic tethers, solar sails or inflatable components. While each method has its own pros and cons, some of these concepts seem to be more suitable for the short term and others for the long term. This paper identifies major performance measures for space debris removal systems based on current rules and regulations and maps the performance of the ADR technologies based on these criteria. The map can help prioritize removal concepts and required technologies in order to better meet current needs

LONG-RUN STRIGA CONTROL BY SUBSISTENCE FARMERS IN MALI

    Get PDF
A dynamic programming model is developed to identify barriers to the adoption of long-run control programs for the parasitic weed Striga. The model is applied to Sirakorola in northwestern Mali. The ability of national and village-level institutions to overcome the barriers to adoption is explored.Community/Rural/Urban Development, Research and Development/Tech Change/Emerging Technologies,

Rice productivity in rainfall lowlands complexes such as sahelian and sudanese sahelian regions, depends on water control. In western Senegal Sine Saloum Region, lowlands salinity is due to sea contact. To reduce negative salinity effects and maintain good water control, a dam was built in Ndour Ndour village. To optimize input of this dam, agricultural activities were conducted with extension parteners. The main role of scientists in this partership is the agronomic, economic and biophysical characterization of lowlands continuum. Lowlands rice cultivation in this new context is characterized by significant productivity improvement and male\'s effective involvement in this activity, so far conducted by women. The study showed that most soils are sandy; in addition and the dam allows to maintain river water in place and to eliminate salts, making soils suitable for agriculture.
