Collaborative workshop: sustainable civil engineering proposals for real settings

    Get PDF
The objective is to familiarize students with real civil engineering problems as posed by social agents (e.g. a city council, a neighbourhood association, etc.) and to foster social responsibility, active and cooperative learning, teamwork and sustainability. A multidisciplinary team accompanies students in finding solutions to problems affecting a region, with the goal of training them in how to sensitively deal with complex urban realities and understand the possible impacts and conflicts of their projects for their region and society. Methodologically, this training strategy is based on active teamwork and cooperation applied to a real case. It is also influenced by service learning in that local stakeholders explain their problems to the students and ask for solutions. This initiative is not part of any study plan but is a complementary teaching activity organized by the Civil Engineering School of Barcelona and worth 3 ECTS for participating students. In 2016-2017, the workshop —covering problems related to harbour design, water quality, pedestrian bridges and retaining walls— as conducted in Marina d’Empuriabrava on the Costa Brava, proving to be a very satisfactory experience for students, teachers and local stakeholders in terms of learning and proposals. In 2017-2018 the workshop has been held in El Vendrell (Tarragona). In the next, editions, it is planned to make ongoing improvements in terms of time organization and teamwork evaluation.Postprint (published version

Sensitivity equations and calibration requirements on airborne interferometry

    Get PDF
The usage of an airborne interferometric SAR to mass map production is strongly dependent on the capability of performing the data processing in a near automatic mode. One of the main limitations is related to both the accurate calibration of the system parameters, its stability from flight to flight and the correct in-flight recording of aircraft position and attitude. The unstable movements of an airborne SAR platform, if recorded in an accurate manner, can be corrected during the processing step. Measurement errors and time drifts lead to location errors in the final DEM. The system requirements in both accuracy and stability to fulfil a quality-mapping requirement can be resolved from the sensitivity equations. The same equations can be also used to calibrate the system parameters from the location errors on the imaging of well-known targets, usually corner reflectors.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Evaluation of CyberKnife Radiosurgery for Recurrent Trigeminal Neuralgia

    Get PDF
Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) has evolved as an accepted treatment for medication resistant trigeminal neuralgia. Initial results are very good but follow-up over three to five years shows a gradual return of pain in up to 50% of treated patients, often requiring further treatment. The results with repeat SRS using the isocentric Gamma Knife (GK) (Elekta, Stockholm, Sweden), especially in patients having initially good results, are very similar to the outcomes after the initial treatment although there is an increased risk of residual facial numbness secondary to the additional radiation dose to the trigeminal nerve. However, after 2000, non-isocentric SRS systems began to be used for treating trigeminal neuralgia including the CyberKnife (CK) (Accuray, Sunnyvale, California) as well as various linear accelerator (LINAC) based systems. This report specifically examines a series of recurrent trigeminal cases treated by the same group of physicians with the CK system. Similar doses and locations on the trigeminal nerve and/or the root entry zone were used for both initial and repeat SRS treatment regardless of system used. Although there are numerous series reporting the use of GK for recurrent treatment for recurrent trigeminal neuralgia, there are no series reviewing the results and long-term effectiveness using CK for repeat SRS for recurrent trigeminal pain. We reviewed 23 cases that had initial treatment for trigeminal neuralgia either surgically or with SRS with either the GK or CK and then a later second procedure only with CK. The follow-up after the second CK SRS ranged from three to 13 years found that the results are very similar to the multiple reports in the literature describing second or third SRS treatments with the GK. Results of repeat radiosurgery treatment of recurrent trigeminal neuralgia appear to be independent of the system used and are primarily based on proper target and dose to the trigeminal nerve
