What symptoms of disordered gambling, disordered eating, anxiety, and depression co-occur? The explanatory power of network analysis

An abstract (not to exceed 200 words) Disordered gamblers often exhibit comorbid psychiatric disorders, however, little is known about how or why these disorders co-occur. We posit that comorbidity is likely the result of one or more symptoms of disordered gambling being strongly associated with one or more symptoms of other disorders. To test this idea, we conducted a network analysis to identify relations between individual symptoms of disordered gambling, disordered eating, anxiety, and depression in a representative sample of Canadians from the Bay of Quinte region of Ontario (N=4121). Results indicated that chasing one’s losses was a central symptom in the disordered gambling network. Moreover, it connected to compensatory purging behavior in the disordered eating network. Furthermore, the disordered gambling and depression symptom networks were related indirectly though the anxiety symptom network. More specifically, the disordered gambling symptom pertaining to the need to gamble with larger amounts of money to get the same feeling of excitement was associated with the anxiety symptom pertaining to excessive worrying and difficulty stopping to do so. In turn, excessive worrying was connected to the depression symptom pertaining to feeling sad, down, or blue. This research suggests a need to focus on individual symptoms when examining the interrelation among disorders. Word count = 199 A clear statement of the implications of the material to be presented, i.e., the “so what?” of the presentation (not to exceed 50 words) The results make a unique theoretical contribution to the gambling studies field in terms of understanding the core symptom(s) underlying disordered gambling and the specific symptoms that connect disordered gambling with other co-occurring disorders. These findings have basic and applied significance for the treatment of disordered gambling and comorbid conditions. Word count = 5

Republican States Bolstered Their Health Insurance Rate Review Programs Using Incentives From the Affordable Care Act.

    Get PDF
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) included financial and regulatory incentives and goals for states to bolster their health insurance rate review programs, increase their anticipated loss ratio requirements, expand Medicaid, and establish state-based exchanges. We grouped states by political party control and compared their reactions across these policy goals. To identify changes in states rate review programs and anticipated loss ratio requirements in the individual and small group markets since the ACAs enactment, we conducted legal research and contacted each states insurance regulator. We linked rate review program changes to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) criteria for an effective rate review program. We found, of states that did not meet CMSs criteria when the ACA was enacted, most made changes to meet those criteria, including Republican-controlled states, which generally oppose the ACA. This finding is likely the result of the relatively low administrative burden associated with reviewing health insurance rates and the fact that doing so prevents federal intervention in rate review. However, Republican-controlled states were less likely than non-Republican-controlled states to increase their anticipated loss ratio requirements to align with the federal retrospective medical loss ratio requirement, expand Medicaid, and establish state-based exchanges, because of their general opposition to the ACA. We conclude that federal incentives for states to strengthen their health insurance rate review programs were more effective than the incentives for states to adopt other insurance-related policy goals of the ACA

Iran’s New Interventionism: Reconceptualizing Proxy Warfare in the Post-Arab Spring Middle East

    Get PDF
Iranian proxy groups in the Middle East pose a continuing challenge to stability, American interests, and peaceful self-governance in the region. From a strategic standpoint, Iran’s innovative use of proxy groups to pursue their political and military interests has proven difficult to understand and respond to within a comprehensive framework. This paper will argue in favor of reviving and modifying the ‘new wars’ literature as a theoretical framework for understanding Iranian proxy groups and regional interests. It analyses Iranian actions in fostering relationships with non-state actors in the region as an extension of the state into ‘new wars’ dynamics and concludes that Iran foments or pacifies ‘new wars’ tensions as those tensions fit broader Iranian security interests

My MFA thesis and supporting exhibition will highlight sculptural work I have created that deals directly or indirectly with circumstances surrounding personal health problems. A recent L4-5 micro-discectomy and the following complications have given much inspiration for my art making. I use this personal narrative as a jumping-off point to create object-based artwork that brings up larger, more universal themes, such as body, disability, pain, and pharmaceutical use. I will explain how the creation of artwork about the process of healing brought with it its own catharsis

A study of the reactivity of reduced molybdenum ethoxides: Synthesis and characterization of MoO(OH) and some novel molybdenum ethoxide cluster molecules

A low temperature route was used in an attempt to produce reduced molybdenum oxides. When molybdenum (III) ethoxide was hydrolyzed with the stoichiometric amount of water in hydrocarbon solvent, a quantitative yield of product was recovered. Elemental and molybdenum oxidation state analyses on this material indicated an empirical formula of Mo[subscript]2(OH)[subscript]5(OEt). When this material was heated in the presence of hydrogen at 250°C, a black solid was produced. Analyses indicated the material is MoO(OH). All attempts to thermally decompose MoO(OH) to the oxide, Mo[subscript]2O[subscript]3, were unsuccessful. A mixture of Mo[subscript]2O[subscript]3 and MoO[subscript]2 was produced instead. However, MoO(OH) was used, successfully, to synthesize LiMoO[subscript]2 from a reaction with Li[subscript]2CO[subscript]3 at 600°C. In addition, MoO(OH) was also used to synthesize Na[subscript] xMoO[subscript]2 (where x = 0.66);In an attempt to remove the final ethoxide ligand of Mo[subscript]2(OH)[subscript]5(OEt) by reaction with water to produce the pure hydroxide species, Mo(OH)[subscript]3, the hydrolysis reaction was completed using an excess (2-4 molar excess) of water. The solid recovered from this reaction still retained the ethoxide ligand and was slightly oxidized by the excess water. Surprisingly, however, the filtrate of the reaction afforded crystals with the formula, Mo[subscript]6O(OEt)[subscript]18 · 4.8H[subscript]2O. The yield of Mo[subscript]6O(OEt)[subscript]18 was very small. Therefore, attempts were made to synthesize it from reactions of Mo(OEt)[subscript]3 with other oxidizing agents, such as Sb[subscript]2O[subscript]5, C[subscript]6H[subscript]5IO, (CH[subscript]3)[subscript]3NO, and N[subscript]2O. However, these reactions did not successfully produce the cluster; Finally, an alternate synthetic route to isolate reduced molybdenum ethoxides was explored. Mo[subscript]2Cl[subscript]4py[subscript]4 was used in a reaction with sodium ethoxide in neat ethanol. When the reaction was carried out at room temperature overnight, a brown crystalline material was isolated from the ethanol. Elemental analysis of this material suggested the empirical formula could be written as Mo[subscript]4(OEt)[subscript]10py. Single crystal x-ray analysis was not completed due to the highly twinned nature of these crystals; When this reaction was completed in refluxing ethanol, a mixture of homoleptic molybdenum ethoxide species was isolated. Furthermore, a reaction of this molybdenum ethoxide mixture with iodosobenzene produced the novel cluster, Mo[subscript]4(OEt)[subscript]14(HOEt)[subscript]2
