Sobol\u27 sensitivity analysis of the Holocene Peat Model: What drives carbon accumulation in peatlands?

Understanding the development of northern peatlands and their carbon accumulation dynamics is crucial in order to confidently integrate northern peatlands into global carbon cycle models. To achieve this, northern peatland models are becoming increasingly complex and now include feedback processes between peat depth, decomposition, hydrology, and vegetation composition and productivity. Here we present results from a global sensitivity analysis performed to assess the behavior and parameter interaction of a peatland simulation model. A series of simulations of the Holocene Peat Model were performed with different parameter combinations in order to assess the role of parameter interactions on the simulated total carbon mass after 5000 years of peatland development. The impact of parameter uncertainty on the simulation results is highlighted, as is the importance of multiple parameter interactions. The model sensitivity indicates that peat physical properties play an important role in peat accumulation; these parameters are poorly constrained by observations and should be a focus of future research. Furthermore, the results show that autogenic processes are able to produce a wide range of peatland development behaviors independently of any external environmental changes

Paléoécologie d’un secteur riverain de la rivière Saint-Charles : analyse macrofossile du site archéologique de la Grande Place, à Québec

Des recherches archéologiques réalisées dans la basse-ville de Québec ont eu pour objectif d'identifier 1) les différentes périodes d'occupation du secteur depuis l'arrivée des Européens, et 2) l'emplacement du village iroquoïen de Stadaconé mentionné par Jacques Cartier dans le récit de ses voyages. L'analyse paléoécologique détaillée d'une séquence organique a permis de préciser le contexte géomorphologique du paléorivage de la rivière Saint-Charles. La séquence analysée provient d'une dépression dans laquelle se sont accumulés des débris organiques en raison des mauvaises conditions de drainage causées par le rehaussement d'environ 2 mètres du niveau marin relatif il y a 2000 ans (transgression Mitis). Des cordons de sable correspondant au niveau des hautes mers furent déposés sur le replat de la terrasse Mitis. Coincées entre la falaise et les cordons sableux, des cédrières tourbeuses se sont développées dans ces dépressions humides.Archaeoecological research downtown Québec City has been realized for the identification of 1) different occupation phases since the arrival of the Europeans, 2) location of Stadaconé village, a native agglomeration mentionned by Jacques Cartier in his travel diary. Detailed paleoecological analysis of an organic section allowed the geomorphic reconstruction of the Rivière Saint-Charles paleoriver bank. The origin of the analyzed sequence is from a depression in which organic deposits accumulated as a consequence of drainage deterioration caused by a 2 m rise of relative sea level 2000 years ago (Mitis transgression). Sand barriers have been deposited on top of the Mitis terrasse and associated with high tide levels. Cedar swamps developped in depressions formed between these sand barriers and the cliff of the Québec promontory.Das Ziel archàologischer Forschungen in der Unterstadt von Québec war es, zwei Dinge zu identifizieren: 1) die verschiedenen Siedlungsperioden des Abschnitts seit der Ankunft der Europâer, 2) den Standort des lrokesendorfs Stadaconé, das Jacques Cartier in seinem Reisebericht erwàhnt. Die detaillierte palàoôkologische Analyse eines organischen Schnitts machte es môglich, den geomorphologischen Kontext des Palàoufers von Rivière Saint-Charles zu bestimmen. Der analysierte Schnitt stammt aus einer Senke, in welcher sich organische Ablagerungen sammelten, wegen der Drainageverschlechterung , verursacht durch die Anhebung des relativen Meeresniveaus urn etwa zwei Meter vor 2000 Jahren (Mitis Transgression). Sanddamme, die dem Niveau der Flut entsprechen, wurden auf der Mitis-Terrasse abgelagert. Eingeklemmt zwischen die Steilkuste und die Sanddamme haben sich in diesen feuchten Mulden sumpfige Zedernwâlder entwickelt

Le paysage dans la tradition documentaire québécoise : un regard off sur la parole

On dégagera ici trois esthétiques du paysage à l'intérieur d'une même tradition cinématographique, celle du documentaire québécois en style « direct ». L'hypothèse est que le lieu du commentaire - de la traditionnelle voix off - s'est déplacé du côté du regard et qu'il doit être débusqué dans un paysage. Ce paysage comme visibilité de la parole, nous l'examinerons d'abord chez Pierre Perrault, pour ensuite nous pencher sur deux héritiers contemporains de cette tradition : Lucie Lambert et Sylvain L'Espérance.This article takes up a discussion of three different landscape aesthetics within the same film tradition, that of the Québécois "cinéma direct" documentary. The author's hypothesis is that the space of the commentary, of the traditional voice over, has been displaced here to the realm of the gaze, and that it can be uncovered in the landscape. This landscape, a speech made visible, is examined first of all in the work of Pierre Perrault. Discussion then focuses on two contemporary heirs to this tradition, Lucie Lambert and Sylvain L'Espérance
