Alternative Spring Break and Social Responsibility is There a Relationship?

Humans are living in a complex, interdependent, global society. Violence by youth is at an all-time high, the school system is failing to educate students (especially in urban areas), and all of this is compounded by major economic and social forces that are significantly altering the fabric of our lives. According to Keith (1994) these forces include: “… the impact of technology and the globalization of the economy on social relations and the structure of work (Broyn. 1991; Mingrone, 1983; Offee & Heinz. 1992; Wilson. 1987); the depletion of non-renewable resources and the ecological crisis; the mounting pace of population movements across national boundaries. especially from the \u27poorer\u27 to the \u27richer\u27 countries (Schaefer. 1990); differential rates of population growth favoring so-called people of color (Pallas, et. al., 1989); the economic and political shifts attendant to post-cold war transformations; and the visible social tensions accompanying all of these, which find expression in part, in a growing intolerance of diversity and violence towards those defined as \u27Others\u27 (313). With all this chaos. how do we develop socially responsible citizens for the future? The current research in community service-learning might provide some answers

Robust Design Review Conversations

Design reviews and executive conversations at the point of strategic decision-making share an important outcome: they both result in the (nearly) irrevocable allocation of resources to pursue a design concept or strategic option. Our study aims to contribute to the strategic decision-making scholarship by investigating the robustness of these conversations. We define a robust design review conversation as one in which the participants discuss evidence in favor of and against the option and at the same time propose new hypotheses to explain or resolve the evidence in favor of and against the option, hypotheses that can eventually be tested. We describe this second process as generative sensing. Whereas the first process is likely to rely on deductive reasoning from established rules to a definitive conclusion, the second is likely to rely on abductive reasoning, a form of reasoning that generates new hypotheses that are candidate parsimonious explanations for the evidence. We analyze and compare the design review conversations from a junior-level undergraduate course in industrial design and an entrepreneurship course. We find more instances of generative sensing in the industrial design review sessions than in the entrepreneurship project presentations. We believe that generative sensing serves three instrumental purposes: to resolve problems; to provide signals on option quality; and, to test the commitment to the present design concept

Флористическая метафора в русском и итальянском языках

The article focuses on the study of the mechanism of metaphorization of flower vocabulary in the Russian and Italian languages. The denominations of flowers are motivated by semantic and word-formative processes: the inner form of these phytonyms may be pronounced or unclear. In certain cases the process of semantic derivation does not stop and develops a system of flower metaphors. The article analyzes the correlation between the original meaning of phytonymic denominations and their later one as formed in the metaphoric process: the metaphor may develop meanings already present in the first denomination, or it may rely on other features. The choice of the bases of methaphorization is important to understand the specificity of different metaphoric pictures of the world.Статья посвящена сопоставительному исследованию механизмов метафоризации флористической лексики русского и итальянского языков. Наименования цветов являются семантически и словообразовательно мотивированными: внутренняя форма фитонимов может быть живой или стертой. Для этой тематической группы характерен процесс семантической деривации, в результате которого формируется система флористических метафор. В работе рассматривается соотношение первичных фитонимических номинаций и их позднейших переосмыслений в процессе метафоризации: метафора может развивать уже заложенные в первичной номинации смыслы, а может основываться на ассоциативных признаках. Выбор оснований в процессе метафоризации оказывается значимым для понимания специфики разных метафорических картин мира

Etude du phénomène de lubrification électroactive à l'aide d'actionneurs piézoélectriques. Application à la réduction des forces de frottement sec dans un moteur à combustion interne

Mes travaux de recherche portent sur la modulation du frottement par des vibrations ultrasoniques générées au sein d'un contact solide en frottement sec. Une approche analytique basée sur les conditions de fretting entre solides élastiques associées à une sollicitation dynamique normale a permis de dégager les conditions de lubrification électroactive. Les fortes pressions de contact et les fréquences d'excitation élevées requises, nous orientent alors naturellement vers l'emploi d'actionneurs piézoélectriques. Sur le plan expérimental, une approche fondamentale sur tribomètre a été d'abord menée pour valider notre approche théorique. Si les applications potentielles de la lubrification électroactive sont nombreuses (actionneurs haptiques kinesthésiques, embrayage piézoélectrique,. . . ), ces travaux ont été appliqués à la réduction des pertes par frottement dans un moteur à combustion interne sous l'impulsion du motoriste de Formule 1 ASIATECH. Abstract : My research deals with the application of ultrasonic vibrations in friction modulation on a dry contact between solids. Based on fretting conditions between elastic bodies associated with a dynamic normal excitation, an analytical study permits to highlight excitations parameters and model the electroactive lubrication. This technique requires heavy contact pressures and high excitation frequencies. Until now, the most adaptable actuator technology is the piezoelectric systems. Experimentally, a fundamental approach on tribometer was realized in order to validate our theorical study. Many potential applications of electroactive lubrication are possible such as haptic actuators and piezoelectric clutch. Our works were applied on the friction losses reduction in a combustion engine for the F1 motor manufacturer ASIATECH

The aim of the present study, starting from the renewed centrality of Article 35 of the Constitution postulating the protection of the work in all its forms and applications, is to investigate the possible (and necessary) extension of Article 36 of the Constitution to the area of self-employment. Through the review of jurisprudential interpretations and the legislative developments, the paper intends to find a point of synthesis that allows for the extensive application of the principle of fair pay to all personal work in favor of others
