The following non-refereed paper has been compiled by the editors from the audio transcript and notes provided by Susanna Ferrar for her talk delivered to the Inaugural Totally Huge New Music Festival Conference (Perth: 9 Oct. 2005). The original program note to her presentation reads: I keep talking about this project I\u27m doing, visiting places where the ashes of my grandparents\u27 children ended up, who were all born and raised in Western Australia. As I proceed, adventures seem to be befalling me. Sometimes it seems more important to hang out the washing or change the cat litter. The level of anxiety is high. I\u27m not sure I can cope. I am the artist. I am going to talk. I am chipping away all the bits that aren\u27t part of whatever it is that I am creating. I have sound, I have pictures. There are words. I don\u27t know what they will make in the end. It will be personal, subjective, universal, pretentious, daring, weak. Ferra also played the violin as part of her presentation

    PRETA Air: Hazardous Air Pollutants

    Get PDF
This report shows that people living in a 10-county region of southwestern Pennsylvania have a significantly higher than acceptable risk of developing cancer due to exposure to toxic air pollution released by manufacturing processes, energy production and diesel combustionThe Pittsburgh Regional Environmental Threats Analysis Report -- funded by The Heinz Endowments -- analyzes publicly available data on hazardous air pollutants (HAPs), also known as air toxics. Air toxics include approximately 200 pollutants identified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as known or suspected to cause cancer or other serious health effects, such as respiratory, neurological and reproductive disorders. The report is the third in a series as part of a project examining major threats to human health and the environment in southwestern Pennsylvania

Self-Assembly and High-Rate Production of Colloids and Microprisms

This dissertation examines the self-assembly of colloidal spheres at a ITO-coated glass substrate under an applied field, and also of thin, equilateral triangle microprisms at a flat air-water interface. Additionally, the dissertation also demonstrates a new two-step, continuous process for the fabrication of gram-scale quantities of colloidal ellipsoids in a single day of processing. The self-assembly of both colloids and microprisms has application for the design of new materials. Specifically, 3D colloidal crystals possess unique optical and photonic properties, and 2D open networks self-assembled from microprisms at fluid-fluid interfaces possess voids that can generate useful mechanical properties. High-rate, continuous processing of colloidal ellipsoids supports experimental studies of the self-assembly of colloidal gels, suspensions, and crystals.PHDChemical EngineeringUniversity of Michigan, Horace H. Directed Accelerated Growth: Application in Citation Network

In many real world networks, the number of links increases nonlinearly with the number of nodes. Models of such accelerated growth have been considered earlier with deterministic and stochastic number of links. Here we consider stochastic accelerated growth in a network where links are directed. With the number of out-going links following a power law distribution, the results are similar to the undirected case. As the accelerated growth is enhanced, the degree distribution becomes independent of the ``initial attractiveness'', a parameter which plays a key role in directed networks. As an example of a directed model with accelerated growth, the citation network is considered, in which the distribution of the number of outgoing link has an exponential tail. The role of accelerated growth is examined here with two different growth laws.Comment: To be published in the proceedings of Statphys Kolkata V (Physica A
