    Around an Image

    This is a collection of poetry and creative nonfiction from the four years I attended Cedarville. Each of the pieces originated from a specific image and allowed that image to shape the rest of the work. I use the concrete images to engage complicated ideas or situations I have experienced. I use the writing in this collection to better understand the things I have experienced. The nonfiction shorts “Scar Tissue,” “Sunday 26 January 2014,” and “Malibu Beach: Camp Lot 29” have all been published in the Marco Polo Arts Magazine

    This is my capstone paper from English Seminar and my English degree. The paper is an analysis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers album Californication and its relation to the fan base of the band. It explores the influences on the creation of the album within a postmodern context, using the theories of Katherine Hayles, Jean Baudrillard, and Michel Foucault. Through these theories, the paper explores the postmodern impact on the Cult of Celebrity and the American Dream and how those affected the lives of Anthony Kiedis and John Frusciante from the Peppers. Finally, the paper shows how the album Californication communicates the harmful effects of the American Dream and uses the experiences of Kiedis and Frusciante to relate to the experiences of the Peppers\u27 fans

    This essay compares John Milton\u27s views of educational reform during the 17th Century in England to the Common Core State Standards currently being developed in the United States. The essay argues that the Common Core is a postmodern reinvention of Milton\u27s education reform presented in his tract, Of Education. It outlines the education Milton received, and how that compared to the pedagogy Milton developed and implemented in his own school. Then, Milton\u27s pedagogy is compared to the implementation of the Common Core State Standards, specifically focusing on the career and college preparation goals presented by the Common Core and difference in religious and moral emphasis

    Constructing Agency: The Role of Language

    Is agency a straightforward and universal feature of human experience? Or is the construction of agency (including attention to and memory for people involved in events) guided by patterns in culture? In this paper we focus on one aspect of cultural experience: patterns in language. We examined English and Japanese speakers’ descriptions of intentional and accidental events. English and Japanese speakers described intentional events similarly, using mostly agentive language (e.g., “She broke the vase”). However, when it came to accidental events English speakers used more agentive language than did Japanese speakers. We then tested whether these different patterns found in language may also manifest in cross-cultural differences in attention and memory. Results from a non-linguistic memory task showed that English and Japanese speakers remembered the agents of intentional events equally well. However, English speakers remembered the agents of accidents better than did Japanese speakers, as predicted from patterns in language. Further, directly manipulating agency in language during another laboratory task changed people’s eye-witness memory, confirming a possible causal role for language.
