Public opinion and the "problem of information"

    Get PDF
The term public opinion first gained popularity the 18th Century European enlightenment. Today, because of its centrality to the rationale of advanced liberal democracies, public opinion constitutes a nexus between the worlds of formal and everyday politics. This chapter outlines a tension between two competing assumptions about the relationship between public opinion and rational democratic governance. On the one hand, public opinion is treated as the ultimate source of political authority. On the other hand, the everyday opinion of mass publics is understood to be too heavily motivated by personal self-interest, and too deficient in factual understanding to ever serve as a legitimate basis for the governance of complex modern societies. In the second part of the chapter I present a case study from my own research on vernacular political reasoning, focusing on the phenomenon of empty attitudes: sincere opinions on matters of public debate which can be satisfactorily justified without recourse to detailed factual information

Experimental Study of Stability and Integrity of Cement in Wellbores Used for CO2 Storage

AbstractThis paper examines the results obtained from lab experiments on cement deterioration in sulfate and CO2 environments. The experimental work consisted of preparing several sets of samples, placing them in environments at different conditions, and monitoring change in various properties once every two months for a period of one year. The parameters investigated were: -Permeability-Compressive strength-Effect of diffusion using the scanning electronic microscope-Shear and hydraulic bonding strength Lab results showed that the effect of sulfates and CO2 can be beneficial for the plugging purposes due to the reduction of permeability. However, reduction of compressive strength under CO2 environment was observed

Devolution and national identity: the rules of English (dis)engagement

In this article I consider why the expected English backlash to the asymmetric UK devolution settlement has not yet materialised. Using a corpus of conversational interviews, I discuss the various ways in which people in England currently understand the relationship between national identity and political entitlement. I conclude that English political quiescence, far from constituting an enigma, is comprehensible in the light of the fact that members of the general public do not usually base their assessments of political legitimacy on calculations of English national self-interest defined in contrast to Scotland. Rather, political issues tend to be judged with reference to principles of equity and procedural justice. English identity is rarely considered legitimate grounds for political voice. Rather, people are inclined to demonstrate a concern to balance the recognition of Scottish rights to national self-determination, with a display of public reason, civility and civic responsibility understood to be normatively incumbent upon the English majority

Rebranding Britain? Ideological dilemmas in political appeals to “British Multiculturalism”

In this chapter I consider some dilemmatic tensions within contemporary attempts to (re)brand Britain a “multicultural society”. I start out by considering two political speeches in which Labour Party ministers associated British Multiculturalism with the general liberal values of social inclusion, tolerance, human rights, progressive change and cosmopolitan moral and political sensibility. Analysis of the text of these speeches reveals tensions within these arguments. First, the rhetorical formulations that the speakers used to justify the political project of British Multiculturalism tacitly presupposed a natural order in which nations are normally populated by a racially and culturally homogenous folk. Second, British Multiculturalism is presented as a form of brand distinctiveness, differentiating the United Kingdom from other polities, and endowing the British state with commercial and military advantage in the international arena. Finally, far from constituting a post- Anglocentric, post-colonial re-formulation of national identity, the specific narratives used to legitimate the construct of British Multiculturalism closely echo the discursive tropes previously used to promote British Imperialism

For a long time a business start-up was considered as a solitary act. Nowadays, it is generally accepted that it is frequently a collective initiative. However, few works have examined the reasons which lead to the creation of start-ups by entrepreneurial teams. In this article, we show how teams appear from the crystallization of the social network of the creator, according to different logics of constitution. The use of the case-study method leads us to propose a typology of entrepreneurship teams, stressing the principles of constitution, the advantages and the risks of each form.

AbstractThis paper provides a broad description of the Saskatchewan Environmental Code (SEC), its purposes, and potential implications for the provincial energy and environmental sectors. We start with an introduction to the framework of the Saskatchewan Environmental Code, followed by a discussion of the Results-Based Regulations (RBR) and the differences between RBR and the more traditional Prescriptive-Based Regulations (PBR). Next, we summarize the 19 chapters grouped in the five divisions of the SEC and finish with a brief description of the public review and future tasks for the full development of the SEC.The new Saskatchewan Environmental Code is key component of the Ministry's move to a Results- Based Regulatory model which will enhance environmental protection while encouraging innovation. The new model represents a significant shift away from prescriptive legislation and regulations to a focus on holding proponents accountable for achieving desirable environmental outcomes

Social identity theory and self categorization theory.

Political behaviour always involves social groups, whether these take the form of concrete networks and gatherings of individuals such as pressure groups, demonstrations, governments, cadres or committees, or whether they are constituted as large-scale institutions or imagined communities (Anderson, 1991) such as polities, states, political parties, interest groups, publics, constituencies or electorates. In so far as social groups are central to politics, it follows that the psychology of groups should be relevant to our understanding of political psychology. Social Identity Theory and Self-Categorization Theory represent major theoretical attempts to clarify the social psychological processes associated with group membership and action, and should therefore be in a good position to provide a significant contribution to that understanding
