    Do young Australians understand and live ‘equality’ and ‘difference’ differently from older generations? Is Australia the gender equal society that many claim it to be? How do we understand and explain growing economic inequality when our dominant ideologies are individualism and neoliberalism? What are or should be the limits of tolerance in our negotiation of cultural difference? Imagining the Future explores our contemporary complex equality narrative through the desires and dreams of 1000 young Australians and 230 of their parents from diverse backgrounds across Australia. This ‘extraordinary’ data set affords analysis of the impact of gender, socio-economic disadvantage, ethnicity, Aboriginality and sexuality on young people’s ‘imagined life stories’, or essays written about their future. An intergenerational comparison assesses how different young people really are from older generations. The book offers a compelling and subtle engagement with the sometimes ‘deeply moving’, sometimes ‘hilarious’ voices of young people to deliver insight into the challenges and complexity of gender and other social relations in early 21st Australian society

    Do you like action? Do you enjoy problem-solving? Would it intrigue you to be a part of a field where you will be learning throughout your entire life? I’m an emergency room pharmacist and I love my job. I always knew that I wanted to be a pharmacist. I made my decision freshman year of high school when I did community service in the pharmacy at the local hospital. After graduating high school in 2001, I nurtured my interest by working as a pharmacy tech for years while i was an undergrad. Life after high school... is always full of surprises. I was almost derailed a couple of times (I will give you advice on how to avoid this) but I graduated from NSU in 2006 with my B.S. in Biology, then went on to pharmacy school. I graduated from NSU COP in 2010, finished a year of residency with a focus on emergency medicine and was hired as an emergency department pharmacist. I then worked on a clinical toxicology certificate through the University of Florida for a couple of years so I can be more helpful in drug overdoses and poisonings. I moved to California a couple of years ago and here I am, I really feel like I am living the dream, working a job that puts a silly smile on my face pretty much every single day. When I think about going to work, I actually get super excited. If you think about it, pretty much every situation in the emergency room is treated with medications and I am thus a part of every single patient that comes through our doors. From therapeutic recommendations to dose adjustments to helping determine how to best give a medication and what to look out for, I can say that I help save lives, every day. Selecting, dosing and giving medications can be incredibly stressful to non-pharmacists. It’s really great to be part of the emergency department and the emergency room staff is always so appreciative to have us there. If you have a thirst for action, can keep your calm in stressful situations and enjoy solving problems with an enthusiastic, diverse team of people, think about being an emergency department pharmacist. You’ll never be bored, I promise

    Europeanizing territoriality—towards soft spaces?

    This paper explores the coexistence of relational and territorial spaces—soft spaces—through the experiences of EU integration and territorialization. First, we seek a better understanding of EU integration through an engagement with the literature and research on soft spaces. We propose that EU integration is best understood as involving an interplay between territorial and relational understandings and approaches that vary through time, a variation that can be categorized as involving pooled territoriality, supraterritoriality, and nonterritoriality. Second, we seek to add to the current research and literature on soft spaces by focusing upon the changing character of soft spaces and their temporalities. We approach these two dimensions through an exploration of two ex post case studies, the development of which typically shows different stages of softening, hardening, and of differing degrees of Europeanization. With the focus on Europeanization, the paper concludes with three findings: the new spaces of European territoriality are characterized by, first, temporal dynamics, second, their parallel existence with ‘hard’ spaces, and, finally, they can be employed as a political tool.     Reducing instrumentation errors caused by circumferential flow field variations in multi-stage axial compressors

    Abstract The effects of blade row interactions on stator-mounted instrumentation in axial compressors are investigated using unsteady numerical calculations. The test compressor is an 8-stage machine representative of an aero-engine core compressor. For the unsteady calculations, a 180deg sector (half-annulus) model of the compressor is used. It is shown that the time-mean flow field in the stator leading edge planes is circumferentially non-uniform. The circumferential variations in stagnation pressure and stagnation temperature respectively reach 4.2% and 1.1% of the local mean. Using spatial wave number analysis, the incoming wakes from the upstream stator rows are identified as the dominant source of the circumferential variations in the front and middle of the compressor, while towards the rear of the compressor, the upstream influence of the eight struts in the exit duct becomes dominant. Based on three circumferential probes, the sampling errors for stagnation pressure and stagnation temperature are calculated as a function of the probe locations. Optimization of the probe locations shows that the sampling error can be reduced by up to 77% by circumferentially redistributing the individual probes. The reductions in the sampling errors translate to reductions in the uncertainties of the overall compressor efficiency and inlet flow capacity by up to 50%. Recognizing that data from large-scale unsteady calculations is rarely available in the instrumentation phase for a new test rig or engine, a method for approximating the circumferential variations with single harmonics is presented. The construction of the harmonics is based solely on the knowledge of the number of stators in each row and a small number of equi-spaced probes. It is shown how excursions in the sampling error are reduced by increasing the number of circumferential probes.Industry funde

    Impact of noise on a dynamical system: prediction and uncertainties from a swarm-optimized neural network

    In this study, an artificial neural network (ANN) based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) was developed for the time series prediction. The hybrid ANN+PSO algorithm was applied on Mackey--Glass chaotic time series in the short-term x(t+6)x(t+6). The performance prediction was evaluated and compared with another studies available in the literature. Also, we presented properties of the dynamical system via the study of chaotic behaviour obtained from the predicted time series. Next, the hybrid ANN+PSO algorithm was complemented with a Gaussian stochastic procedure (called {\it stochastic} hybrid ANN+PSO) in order to obtain a new estimator of the predictions, which also allowed us to compute uncertainties of predictions for noisy Mackey--Glass chaotic time series. Thus, we studied the impact of noise for several cases with a white noise level (σN\sigma_{N}) from 0.01 to 0.1.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure

    A reduced subduction graph and higher multiplicity in S_n transformation coefficients

    Transformation coefficients between {\it standard} bases for irreducible representations of the symmetric group SnS_n and {\it split} bases adapted to the Sn1×Sn2⊂SnS_{n_1} \times S_{n_2} \subset S_n subgroup (n1+n2=nn_1 +n_2 = n) are considered. We first provide a \emph{selection rule} and an \emph{identity rule} for the subduction coefficients which allow to decrease the number of unknowns and equations arising from the linear method by Pan and Chen. Then, using the {\it reduced subduction graph} approach, we may look at higher multiplicity instances. As a significant example, an orthonormalized solution for the first multiplicity-three case, which occurs in the decomposition of the irreducible representation [4,3,2,1][4,3,2,1] of S10S_{10} into [3,2,1]⊗[3,1][3,2,1] \otimes [3,1] of S6×S4S_6 \times S_4, is presented and discussed.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figure, iopart class, Revisited version (several typographical errors have been corrected).     En este artículo se realizó el diseño, simulación e implementación de un modulador y un demodulador SSK (Space Shift Keying) para comunicación por luz visible (Visible Ligth Communications, VLC). Inicialmente se investigó las comunicaciones ópticas y las modulaciones principalmente de sistemas de Múltiple Entrada – Simple Salida (Multiple Input Single Output, MISO). Luego se realizó el diseño y simulación en el software DSP Builder. Se implementó un sistema MISO el cual consta de cuatro transmisores y un receptor, las condiciones son que un solo transmisor se encuentre activo en cualquier instante de tiempo y el resto permanezcan inactivos, para lo cual se realizó la codificación de bits, el receptor debe recuperar los datos transmitidos realizando decodificación de bits. La implementación se realizó en la tarjeta FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) Cyclone III. Las pruebas de funcionamiento se realizaron transmitiendo una trama de bits aleatoria a una velocidad de 10 MHz, para lo cual se utilizó un medio guiado con el que se logró probar el funcionamiento del transmisor y receptor, los resultados fueron visualizados en el osciloscopio y se observó que en la transmisión se presenta un retardo de 800 ns.In this paper, we performed the design, simulation and implementation of a modulator and demodulator SSK (Space Shift Keying) for VLC (Visible Ligth Communications). Initially we investigated optical communications and primarily systems modulations MISO (Multiple Input Single Output). Then we did the design and simulation in DSP Builder software. MISO system was implemented which consists of four transmitters and one receiver, the conditions are: only one transmitter is active at any instant of time and the rest remain inactive, for which was performed encoding bits, the receiver must recover the transmitted data decoding bits. The implementation was done on the card FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) Cyclone III. Performance tests were conducted by transmitting a random bit pattern at a rate of 10 MHz, for which was used a guided with which it was possible to test the operation of the transmitter and receiver, the results were displayed on the oscilloscope and observed transmission that provides a 800 ns delay

    Confined optical phonon modes in polar tetrapod nanocrystals detected by resonant inelastic light scattering

    We investigated CdTe nanocrystal tetrapods of different sizes by resonant inelastic light scattering at room temperature and under cryogenic conditions. We observe a strongly resonant behavior of the phonon scattering with the excitonic structure of the tetrapods. Under resonant conditions we detect a set of phonon modes that can be understood as confined longitudinal-optical phonons, surface-optical phonons, and transverse-optical phonons in a nanowire picture.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figure
