    Does the Macaque Monkey Provide a Good Model for Studying Human Executive Control? A Comparative Behavioral Study of Task Switching

    The ability to swiftly and smoothly switch from one task set to another is central to intelligent behavior, because it allows an organism to flexibly adapt to ever changing environmental conditions and internal needs. For this reason, researchers interested in executive control processes have often relied on task-switching paradigms as powerful tools to uncover the underlying cognitive and brain architecture. In order to gather fundamental information at the single-cell level, it would be greatly helpful to demonstrate that non-human primates, especially the macaque monkey, share with us similar behavioral manifestations of task-switching and therefore, in all likelihood, similar underlying brain mechanisms. Unfortunately, prior attempts have provided negative results (e.g., Stoet & Snyder, 2003b), in that it was reported that macaques do not show the typical signature of task-switching operations at the behavioral level, represented by switch costs. If confirmed, this would indicate that the macaque cannot be used as a model approach to explore human executive control mechanisms by means of task-switching paradigms. We have therefore decided to re-explore this issue, by conducting a comparative experiment on a group of human participants and two macaque monkeys, whereby we measured and compared performance costs linked to task switching and resistance to interference across the two species. Contrary to what previously reported, we found that both species display robust task switching costs, thus supporting the claim that macaque monkeys provide an exquisitely suitable model to study the brain mechanisms responsible for maintaining and switching task sets

    How early should be "Early Integrated Palliative Care"?

    : Palliative care, with its focus on comprehensive patient assessment encompassing physical, social, emotional, and spiritual pain, plays a crucial role in modern medicine. Despite its significance, integration with oncology and other healthcare specialties often occurs late in the disease trajectory. Strategies to bridge this gap include considering a "rebranding" of palliative care to "supportive care." Early initiation of palliative care, although challenging to define precisely, aims to improve the quality of life for patients and their families. Studies show some benefits, but the evidence remains limited. An embedded model that encourages interdisciplinary collaboration between oncologists and palliative care practitioners has shown promise. However, it raises questions about training and availability of palliative care specialists. A broader approach involves integrating palliative care principles into medical and nursing education to ensure early recognition of patient needs and empathetic communication. Regular monitoring of patients' physical and non-physical needs, along with appropriate interventions, can alleviate suffering and improve patient outcomes. Ultimately, the integration of palliative care into oncology and other disciplines focuses on addressing the individual's needs and understanding their unique experience of suffering

    Field and laboratory measurement of heart rate in a tropical limpet, Cellana grata

    Heart rate of the tropical limpet Cellana grata was monitored on the shore (Cape d'Aguilar, Hong Kong) and in the laboratory using a non-invasive technique. Individual field measurements performed on inactive limpets, in a variety of thermal conditions during a diurnal low tide, showed a general increase in heart rate with increasing body temperature. This relationship was not always evident when monitoring individual responses over a diurnal low tide period, since under some circumstances, heart rate of individuals decreased with increasing the temperature of the substrate and foot. A factorial laboratory experiment showed that heart rate was faster at higher temperatures but slower in larger animals. The combined evaluation of field and laboratory data suggests that limpets in some habitats may be able to regulate their metabolic rate when resting on hot rock substrates.published_or_final_versio

    Reward changes salience in human vision via the anterior cingulate

    Reward-related mesolimbic dopamine steers animal behavior, creating automatic approach toward reward-associated objects and avoidance of objects unlikely to be beneficial. Theories of dopamine suggest that this reflects underlying biases in perception and attention, with reward enhancing the representation of reward-associated stimuli such that attention is more likely to be deployed to the location of these objects. Using measures of behavior and brain electricity in male and female humans, we demonstrate this to be the case. Sensory and perceptual processing of reward-associated visual features is facilitated such that attention is deployed to objects characterized by these features in subsequent experimental trials. This is the case even when participantsknowthat a strategic decision to attend to reward-associated features will be counterproductive and result in suboptimal performance. Other results show that the magnitude of visual bias created by reward is predicted by the response to reward feedback in anterior cingulate cortex, an area with strong connections to dopaminergic structures in the midbrain. These results demonstrate that reward has an impact on vision that is independent of its role in the strategic establishment of endogenous attention. We suggest that reward acts to change visual salience and thus plays an important and undervalued role in attentional control. Copyright © 2010 the authors

    Community Structure of Terrestrial Invertebrates Inhabiting a Tidal Marsh Islet in the Mediterranean Sea (Gulf of Gabes, Tunisia)

    The composition of the terrestrial arthropod community of a tidal marsh islet in the Gulf of Gabes (Tunisia) was studied during two seasons (spring, autumn). The study was conducted on a small islet located in an area where the highest tidal excursions of the Mediterranean occur. Standard trapping methods (pitfall traps, mobile cages) were used to evaluate specie richness and abundance in different areas of the islet. Diversity indices were calculated for coleopterans and isopods alone. The structure of the arthropod community varied a great deal from one season to the other and differences were found when seaward areas were compared with landward ones. El Bessila presented a particularly rich beetle community whereas only few isopod species occurred. The moderately high diversity levels found for the beetle indicate the influence of the high tidal excursions in modelling the structure of the community
