The Effect of Relative Sediment Volume on Sheet Properties of Coated Paper

    Get PDF
The degree of dispersion of pigment has been claimed to be an important variable in the determination of sheet properties such as smoothness and gloss. The degree of dispersion of a pigment can be related to relative sediment volume (RSV) by comparison of the solid and void volumes of a clay slip. One school of thought suggests that there is a relation between RSV and coated sheet properties; this relation being, as RSV decreases, smoothness and gloss increase. It was decided that an attempt to relate RSV (degree of dispersion) to optical properties of coated paper could be valuable. Because it was difficult to measure RSV of a coating color using the centrifuge method, it was assumed that if a constant amount of adhesive was used in each of the clay slurries with different RSVs, the relative RSVs of the coating color would remain constant. The theoretical RSVs of the respective coatings were plotted against the optical properties of the coated paper. No correlation was found between RSV and smoothness, gloss, brightness, or opacity, although it was found that as the percent electrolyte added was increased, the gloss increased

There is little evidence that Mexican immigration leads to more crime in US cities

Although crime rates in the U.S. have decreased at the same time that the foreign-born population has doubled, many believe increased immigration is linked with more crime. Using migration triggered by extreme weather to simulate random immigration, Aaron Chalfin tests this hypothesis and finds little connection between Mexican immigration and crime in U.S. cities

Analyzes 1,136 capital cases between 1978 and 1999 to estimate the total costs to the state's taxpayers (i.e., prison and adjudication costs for the duration of the case) when the death penalty is sought compared to when it is not

Caring About More Than Grades and Test Scores: The Work of Reputationally Caring Teachers

    Get PDF
Using Nel Noddings’ definition of care as a theoretical framework (2005) alongside Elliot Eisner’s ecology of schooling (1988), this study examined how “reputationally caring” teachers approached assessment in their classrooms and their reasons for doing so. These topics were explored through interviewing and observing participants, in addition to analyzing documents related to their methods of assessment, utilizing the research methodology of educational criticism and connoisseurship. This qualitative study include four “reputationally caring” teachers. The term “reputational care” is of the author’s creation and refers to those teachers who are known by various school constituents: parents, students, colleagues, and administrators as teachers who demonstrate care by going above and beyond in their classroom, prioritizing studentteacher relationships. Individual context mattered greatly, and the study examined how the participants navigated obstacles to care within their respective environments. In addition, I considered the implications approaching assessment through a lens of care has for the field of education and for the professional development of teachers. Reputational care did not automatically carryover between communities, and detailed description of the participants’ environments and journeys to reputational care underscored the significance such an approach has for educational settings, including the introduction of Educative Care, a new contribution to the field of care and education that views teachers as empathic mentors. The participants of this study viewed their role as such, prioritizing relational care and viewing their relationships with their students and the holistic support of them as of paramount importance. This has implications for the field of education in considering the development and onboarding of teachers into new communities and for developing practices around faculty wellness, caring for those who provide care in educational communities

    CANTILLON, ESPAÇO E TEORIA ECONÔMICA

The paper sketches the economic geography underneath the Essay on theNature of Commerce in General, and attempts to connect the geographical and thetheoretical arguments within Cantillon's system. The main conclusions are: a) Cantillon's social structure scheme presents a first draft of the urban network, which ranks the urban nuclei according to landowner's economic and non-economic decisions; b) the transportation costs are a central element of the monetary theory and of the pricemaking model; c) the transportation costs affect the specie flow mechanism, which governs international trade. In spite of the Essay's advanced approach to the market process and to the circulation process, Cantillon's locational analysis is limited by the framework of his agricultural and natural vision of the economic system.
