Foam Rolling as a Warm-up: The Effect on Lower Extremity Flexibility Compared to Aerobic and Stretching Protocols
Foam rolling has recently become popular in the realms of athletic training, strength and conditioning, and fitness enthusiasts as a means to decrease stiffness, improve flexibility, and manage pain . However, little is known about the physiological effects of foam rolling or its role in improving flexibility pre- or post-exercise. The purpose of this project is to examine and compare the effects of foam rolling, aerobic cycling, and stretching on lower extremity flexibility. Nineteen participants (10 female, 9 male) volunteered to test sit-and-reach flexibility after performing four different warm-up protocols on different days. The warm-up protocols were: Foam Rolling for five minutes, aerobic cycling for five minutes, stretching for five minutes, or lying supine for five minutes (control). A one-way repeated measures ANOVA test was used to determine significant difference (p \u3e 0.05) compared to the control group. Results indicate that foam rolling, cycling, and stretching significantly improved lower body sit-and-reach scores over the control. No significant differences were found between protocols
Electron turbulence at nanoscale junctions
Electron transport through a nanostructure can be characterized in part using
concepts from classical fluid dynamics. It is thus natural to ask how far the
analogy can be taken, and whether the electron liquid can exhibit nonlinear
dynamical effects such as turbulence. Here we present an ab-initio study of the
electron dynamics in nanojunctions which reveals that the latter indeed
exhibits behavior quite similar to that of a classical fluid. In particular, we
find that a transition from laminar to turbulent flow occurs with increasing
current, corresponding to increasing Reynolds numbers. These results reveal
unexpected features of electron dynamics and shed new light on our
understanding of transport properties of nanoscale systems.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Approach to steady state transport in nanoscale conductors
We show, using a tight-binding model and time-dependent density-functional
theory, that a quasi-steady state current can be established dynamically in a
finite nanoscale junction without any inelastic effects. This is simply due to
the geometrical constriction experienced by the electron wavepackets as they
propagate through the junction. We also show that in this closed
non-equilibrium system two local electron occupation functions can be defined
on each side of the nanojunction which approach Fermi distributions with
increasing number of atoms in the electrodes. The resultant conductance and
current-voltage characteristics at quasi-steady state are in agreement with
those calculated within the static scattering approach.Comment: 4+ pages in REVTEX4, 4 epsf figure

TBI with Persistent Cognitive, Visual, and Emotional Challenges of a 24 Year Old College Graduate
24-year-old female experienced a fall and was diagnosed with TBI and is experiencing cognitive and emotional challenges. These effects have lasted a year, despite undergoing multiple treatments and therapies. The patient experiences a lightheaded sensation early in the morning, feeling faint once she gets out of bed, chronic fatigue, and persistent anxiety. The patient continues to move through the grieving process of the injury. A TBI is a Traumatic Brain Injury that occurs when the brain is violently shaken or when there is a blow to the head and causes damage. Due to the damage of the brain, patients may experience problems that involve cognitive, emotional, behavioral, mood, whole body, visual, and speech. The most common symptoms that can occur within hours may be headaches, light sensitivity, noise sensitivity, difficulty concentrating, and confusion. A patient may experience delayed onset of symptoms. The goal of this case study is to look at the longterm effects of a TBI, as well as how it affects the patient’s activities of daily living

Understanding Acculturative Stress In Post-Graduate, International Veterinary Students: A Mixed-Methods Study
Thousands of American veterinary students attend fully-accredited international veterinary institutions every year. There are currently 14 veterinary programs located internationally that are fully-accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association—the same association that accredits American veterinary programs. Although these veterinary students choose to attend these programs, little is known about their experience adapting to the new location and their stressors during their time as veterinary students. With the number of veterinarian suicides rising and the focus on veterinary student mental wellness increasing, gaining a deeper understanding of their experience as students is essential for the future of the profession. The purpose of this mixed method instrumental case study was to identify the nonacademic factors that contributed to psychological distress in veterinary students who have graduated from geographically isolated veterinary programs. Having already completed years of the program in an isolated location(s) and, in some cases, continuing their education and practice in various locations, these veterinarians experienced both academic and nonacademic stress throughout their veterinary academic career, which may have impacted their physiological well-being. While stress can have both positive and negative effects, it is important for graduates to reflect on their veterinary educational experiences and address their stress levels during the acculturation process. Applying the Acculturation Stress Theory to this study assisted in understanding the effect this experience had on veterinary students’ psychological state and overall well-being. The quantitative and qualitative survey used in this study, which was comprised of 75 veterinarians who graduated from international veterinary programs produced conflicting data. Overall, these participants scored low levels of acculturation stress in the quantitative data. However, qualitatively, the responses to the open-ended questions described incidences of discrimination and challenges due to geographic location and culture shock. Although these participants expressed high stress levels due to academic and nonacademic stress factors, each participant in this study was satisfied with the decision to pursue veterinary education in a geographically isolated location
Pavlovian Processes in Consumer Choice: The Physical Presence of a Good Increases Willingness-to-Pay
This paper describes a series of laboratory experiments studying whether the form in which items are displayed at the time of decision affects the dollar value that subjects place on them. Using a Becker-DeGroot auction under three different conditions — (i) text displays, (ii) image displays, and (iii) displays of the actual items — we find that subjects' willingness-to-pay is 40-61 percent larger in the real than in the image and text displays. Furthermore, follow-up experiments suggest the presence of the real item triggers preprogrammed consummatory Pavlovian processes that promote behaviors that lead to contact with appetitive items whenever they are available
The Interaction of Accountants\u27 Involvement and Basis of Accounting on Loan Officers\u27 Judgment When Evaluating a Loan to a Small Business.
Small/private business is an important sector of the economy of the United States; however, the needs of small business are often overlooked when accounting standards are established. This has led to concerns that small businesses are required to report financial information that is not needed by the users of their financial statements, and that they are precluded from reporting information that may be more useful. The purpose of this study was to determine whether loan decisions made using financial statements prepared on a modified basis of accounting affected decisions made by bank loan officers, the primary external users of small business financial statements. The study also examined whether different levels of external certified public accountants\u27 (CPAs) association with the statements affected the decision and whether the interaction of the basis of accounting and the external CPAs\u27 involvement affected the decision. Participants in the study, bank loan officers, received financial statements prepared in conformance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) or financial statements prepared with departures from GAAP in four areas that have been criticized as not being applicable to small businesses. The statements were accompanied by either an audit, review, or compilation report. The study found no differences in the participants\u27 decisions whether they received financial statements prepared in conformance with GAAP or modified GAAP basis financial statements. The results also indicate that the different levels of external CPAs\u27 involvement with the statements did not affect the decision nor did the interaction of the two. The participants were also asked to indicate their need for additional information. The six items most requested are not normally included with financial statements. Only one participant who received the modified GAAP basis financial statements requested any of the GAAP basis information that was omitted
