Historical Revelation for Present-Day Liberation: What the Most Famous Prison Uprising in US History Can Teach Us About Social Change

    Get PDF
The Attica Prison Uprising of 1971, in which prisoners held control of the facility for four days, ended with an assault on the prisoners gathered in D yard. When the tear gas cleared, 29 prisoners and 10 of the guards they had taken hostage were dead, and 128 more men were wounded—all at the hand of the state. The retaking was historically significant not only for the magnitude of the bloodshed but for the cover-up that followed. Investigations were stymied; what investigators ultimately did discover was redacted or sealed. In this paper I examine the Attica Uprising through a lens of prison abolition and explore it as a tool of critical pedagogy. Depending heavily on Heather Ann Thompson’s recent revelations about the Attica Uprising, I retell the history of the uprising guided by Paulo Freire’s pedagogy for liberation. I conclude that such a critical retelling can teach us several lessons about solidarity and social movements in a divided society

The Ramifications of \u3cem\u3eWisconsin v. Yoder\u3c/em\u3e: Six Foundational Problems with a 50-Year Old Landmark Case

My essay introduces the 1972 United States Supreme Court case Wisconsin v. Yoder to readers who don’t come from a legal background who want to understand the negative ramifications of the case and how it affects their individual rights. Yoder says that children of practicing Amish don’t have a right to any education and future other than one inside the Amish Church. My essay deconstructs the case from the perspective of an Amish American woman— yours truly — who escaped in the middle of the night at age 15 because of how this ruling has shaped the Amish people. I wanted to go to high school, and Yoder was cited in my emancipation hearing post-escape for why I had to be on my own if I wanted an education past the eighth grade. If I waited until I was 18 to escape, I would’ve been prevented or discouraged from enrolling in high school and advised or required to attend an alternative program for juvenile delinquents or, at best, adult education. This report is part of a series of 21 state and regional studies examining the rollout of the ACA. The national network -- with 36 states and 61 researchers -- is led by the Rockefeller Institute of Government, the public policy research arm of the State University of New York, the Brookings Institution, and the Fels Institute of Government at the University of Pennsylvania.Colorado is one of fourteen states and the District of Columbia that elected to operate a state-based health insurance exchange and to expand Medicaid in 2014 as part of the rollout of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). These decisions are consistent with Colorado's approach to health care reform. Before the ACA was signed into law in 2010, the state had made incremental expansions in Medicaid eligibility and laid the groundwork for an insurance marketplace

A Portrait of a Successful Pastor: Reanimating the Pastor as Shepherd in a Success Oriented Culture

The purpose of this study is to define a set of metrics by which pastors can measure their “success” as pastors. It is important to note that this is not an effort to define a successful church, which would be a different study altogether. Studies show that a great majority of pastors are struggling in life and ministry and it seems reasonable to ask if this could be a result of ambiguity about the role pastors are supposed to fill and what constitutes successfully doing so. It is my contention that many pastors function without a clear sense of metrics for it means to be a successful pastor but instead, operate with a vague sense about “growing and running” a big church. It is probable that most pastors, by the very nature of their gifting and call, are not equipped or “wired” for that task and are set up for failure from the very outset of their ministry. Chapters will include a survey of how different eras in church history have affected the modern view of pastoral ministry. Chapter one looks at the New Testament and Primitive Church. Chapter two will examine the effects of the Roman Catholic Church up to the Reformation, and chapter three will consider the Reformation. Chapter four will look at the American experience, and chapter five will look at the Biblical foundations of Pastoral ministry. Chapter six is a literature review to consider what other voices are saying and chapter seven will analyze the material and state a summary. Effort has been made to discover recurring qualities throughout the historic church to see what might remain consistent in the measurement of pastors. Changes that began to take place in the pastoral assignment beginning with the advent of the Church Growth Movement in the mid 1950s are especially of interest

AN EXAMINATION OF THE INFLUENCES OF ORGANIZATIONAL, SUPERVISOR, AND COWORKER SUPPORT ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN FLEXIBLE WORK ARRANGEMENTS AND TURNOVER INTENTION OF CIVILIAN FEDERAL EMPLOYEES

Technological advancements and a rapidly changing workforce have created the need for researchers and practitioners to continually examine how work is designed, managed, and accomplished. As increased work demands have blurred the lines between work and family domains, stressors can create conflict between these environments. Flexible work arrangements (FWAs) represent one of the work-family benefit programs offered by employers to alleviate work-family conflict and provide flexibility to workers. This study examined the relationships between multiple support measures (organizational, supervisor, and coworker) and turnover intention in the context of FWAs. The study’s hypotheses predicted negative relationships between the support measures and turnover intention with positive relationships between individual support measures. Responding to the call of researchers to consider multiple support levels in future research (e.g., Abendroth & den Dulk, 2011; Allen, 2001; Ng & Sorensen, 2008), distinct sources of support were considered in a single study design. A survey of 1,172 respondents found statistically significant relationships between the study’s constructs. The findings suggest that the culture and support systems that exist within the organization influence employee outcomes such as turnover intention. Organizations that desire to achieve a dynamic work environment recognize the importance of providing the resources necessary to reduce employee turnover and enhance the work experience. The implications for research, practice, and organizations are discussed, including pathways for future research

The Role of Preceptorship and Group Cohesion on Newly Licensed Registered Nurses\u27 Satisfaction and Intent to Stay

    Get PDF
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to understand how preceptor role effectiveness and group cohesion play a role with nursing satisfaction and intent to stay among newly licensed registered nurses. Design: A descriptive, prospective, cross-sectional design was used. Methods: The newly licensed registered nurse cohorts of a local healthcare system were polled within their first year of practice. The community healthcare system serves five local hospitals and meetings were held at a neutral educational center. A demographic survey as well as surveys on preceptor role effectiveness, perceptions of group cohesion, nursing satisfaction, and intent to stay were used. Results: NLRNs reported high levels of perceived preceptor role effectiveness (M = 65.37, SD = 9.38), group cohesion (M = 32.80, SD = 6.67), and job satisfaction (M = 80.62, SD = 13.91). Despite these factors, NLRNs reported only moderate levels of intent to stay (M = 3.30, SD = 1.10). Statistically significant relationships were found between preceptor role effectiveness and job satisfaction, r(84) = 0.277, p = 0.012; intent to stay, r(84) = 0.262, p = 0.017; and job enjoyment subscale, r(84) = 0.287, p = 0.009. Statistically significant relationships were found between group cohesion and job satisfaction, r(84) = 0.569, p \u3c 0.01; intent to stay, r(84) = 0.553, p \u3c 0. 01; quality of care subscale, r(84) = 0.457, p \u3c 0.01; job enjoyment subscale, r(84) = 0.515, p \u3c 0.01; and time to do job subscale, r(84) = 0.415, p \u3c 0.01. Conclusion: Effective preceptors and positive group cohesion are factors that are important to NLRNs’ job satisfaction and intent to stay. It is important for nursing leaders to identify successful strategies to ease the transition to practice for NLRNs. With proper implementation, nursing leaders can expect some insulation from the global nursing shortage, improved patient outcomes, and increased cost savings from proper NLRN training and retention strategies

Taxation as a Public Health Intervention: Assessing Support for a Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Tax Among Washington, D.C. Residents

    Get PDF
The consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is strongly linked to obesity, along with a myriad of other negative health consequences. In order to mitigate the obesity epidemic and the negative health consequences associated with it, seven U.S. jurisdictions levy an excise tax on SSBs. In October 2019, legislation was introduced to the Washington, D.C. City Council that would levy a 1.5 cent per ounce excise tax on SSBs. The purpose of this needs assessment was to evaluate the current understanding, beliefs, and practices regarding SSBs and excise SSB taxation among adult residents of Washington, D.C. Participants (n=337) were recruited via email and social media through targeted online outreach facilitated by specific community-based organizations and listservs. Participants voluntarily completed a 10-minute online survey adapted from previous studies. Descriptive statistics were calculated to determine means, standard deviations, and frequencies to summarize participant demographics, knowledge of SSBs, consumption and purchase behavior, perceived behavior change, and the level of support for an excise SSB tax. Data showed that the majority of participants had a general understanding that SSBs negatively affected an individual’s health and view SSBs as being very unhealthy. In addition, there was a very high level of support for an excise SSB tax in Washington, D.C. Along with that support, participants also reported that as the excise SSB tax increased, their consumption of taxed sugary drinks would decrease. Recommendations for future research opportunities would be to conduct a larger study with equal representation across all wards, incorporate focus groups, and validate the study. Findings from this study have implications at the individual, organization, and government level
